'Watchmen' Going IMAX?
Filed under: Action, RumorMonger, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Trailers and Clips
Please excuse me if this info is something that has already been established as true; I haven't exactly been keeping tabs on the Watchmen trailer and IMAX and all that jazz. That being said, a Cinematical scooper who wants to remain anonymous for certain reasons tells us that not only will the new Watchmen trailer be attached to IMAX prints of The Dark Knight, but the film itself will also be released on IMAX screens in 2009. In fact, our source says (and I quote): "Watchmen WILL be an IMAX movie in '09."Is this news that's already out there? Am I spacing and in desperate need of a nap? I was at a Bon Jovi concert last night till wicked late, getting my '80s groove on with a little Bad Medicine and Prayer -- so my mind has been playing tricks on me this afternoon. Regardless, hearing how awesome the Watchmen trailer is -- and knowing the film might open on IMAX screens -- has to make fans just a little bit happy. Maybe. A little bit? A lot a bit? We'll let you know when we hear more ...
P.S. Have you seen our Watchmen gallery yet? Pssst ... look down.

Speaking of, IMAX is just beginning to roll out a 100 theater deal with AMC to retrofit in their half-million dollar digital fed projectors. The first theater to get one happens to be my local plex, (Potomac Mills AMC 18, Woodbridge, VA). I spoke with management about it last week, wondering if it was going to be ready in time for The Dark Knight.
Turns out that was managements plan, it was why they fought for the projector in the first place, BUT they would not be showing TDK in IMAX. According to him, the "producers" of TDK have forbidden it to be played in the newly rolled out IMAX theaters because they will not allow it to be distributed digitally (the new projectors use a harddrive instead of actual film stock). I assume it is for fear of piracy.
That sucks and all, but the implications are far more reaching. As a stockholder in IMAX, I'm a little concerned as to the profitability of these new projector roll-outs if studios won't endorse the delivery method. Maybe Cinematical chould pull some PR contacts and get a real answer (pretty please). If what the manager told me is true, I've got to re-think my position (then again, it'll still turn a quick buck next week once TDK shatters records and IMAX stock jumps).
Anyways, er, uh, yes, Watchmen boner.

Most, if not all 'big' WB titles get released on IMAX, so this isn't really a surprise

I attended a press screening of 'The Dark Knight' in IMAX on Monday morning, and the trailer attached to the print was blacked out and muted so we couldn't hear it. We were told it was because we 'were not allowed to see it yet.'
So my guess is that the trailer was for 'Watchmen' in IMAX. Its release date of March 9, 2009, would allow it to slide in for a little more than two weeks before 'Monsters vs. Aliens' (which has been confirmed for IMAX) releases on March 27. Release date congestion is one thing that speaks against this happening, though.
