Djimon Hounsou is 'Thulsa Doom'

Djimon Hounsou's "dream project" has finally been confirmed in the trades. Variety reports that Hounsou is pairing up with Dynamite Entertainment to star in and produce a movie about Thulsa Doom, nemesis of King Kull and Conan the Barbarian. The character originally appeared in Robert E. Howard's story Delcardes' Cat, and is getting his own comic book series (courtesy of Dynamite) next year.
You probably remember Thulsa Doom as being played by the incomparable James Earl Jones in the classic Conan the Barbarian movie. But if you're a fan of Howard's work, you know that Jones' character didn't resemble the literary one very much. The original Thulsa Doom is an undead sorcerer with the face of a skull, with eyes of fire, and all kinds of scary powers.
So, unless Hounsou is going to bury his handsome face behind make-up or CGI, the new Thulsa Doom will be more in line with Jones' character, and another departure from Howard's original pulp stories. Already, they are looking to make a demonic villain more inviting, as Hounsou's film will show how the once heroic Doom went all mean and nasty. Just once, wouldn't it cool to have a movie about a demonic sorcerer who happily eschewed the straight and narrow? Thank goodness J.R.R. Tolkien left no such wiggle room with Sauron or Morgoth, eh?

You called Conan a "classic" movie. Uhhhh.... being old does not make something a classic. Conan was terrible.

you are a fool. Conan is an all-time classic. Go beat-off to Spider Man and call it a classic you new wave psuedo-intellectual.

Although Conan The Barbarian wasn't very faithful at all to the original Robert Howard source material (of which I'm a huge fan), I still think the movie holds up quite well today.
Conan The Destroyer on the other hand...

Where to start with this tangled mess?
Let's look at Thulsa Doom. He was a character in a Robert E. Howard story about KULL, titled Delacrardes Cat.
He was never a character in the Conan/Hyborian World while REH was alive.
Thulsa was drafted to serve as a Bad Guy in the Conan cole slaw that John Milis was responsible for.
Djimon has doubtless been sitting around hoping to become the next James Earl Jones, and hopes he can do that by copying one of his roles.
That's not how James Earl Jones rose to stardom.

Thulsa Doom is a bad character for the big screen. Try as he did, James Earl Jones couldn't make him an engaging character, and then there was that Darth Vader, "I am your father", line to contend with. And now Djimon Hounsou wants to elaborate on that by making a dark fantasy with the same Thulsa Doom as a full blown Darth Vader alsoran?
Please......
If he's really looking for a property to develop why not have a go at Charles Saunder's Imaro novels? Now there's a strong black character, set in an ancient Africa to boot, who has some teeth. As one commenter pointed out, aren't there enough black bad guys in popular cinema?
