Oh No! 'Top Gun 2'?
Filed under: Drama, Romance, Deals, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Tom Cruise
Honestly, by now, I think we've all lost that lovin' feeling. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to hear that folks were mulling a sequel to the 1986 romantic fighter jet flick. Not only are sequels to older films hot these days (see: Indiana Jones 4, Rocky 6, Die Hard 4), but Tom Cruise could provide a real boost to his rep if he were to revisit the character that kinda made him. Whether or not it would actually turn out to be a good movie is a whole different conversation. First off, according to those extremely reliable cats at The Sun, a script outline for Top Gun 2 is done and "movie bosses" want Cruise to star.
Apparently a source said this about the plot: "The idea is Maverick is at the Top Gun school as an instructor - and this time it is he who has to deal with a cocky new female pilot." Ooohh, original ... and spicy! It's like Karate Kid 4 meets A Really Big Paycheck for Tom Cruise! And yet ... we'd all still see it. Why are we such suckers? We currently have no idea how real this rumor is, so for the time being I wouldn't exactly break out into song and dance. Maybe it'll happen, maybe it won't.
What say you? Could this be the sequel we've subconsciously been waiting for our entire lives?

Twenty two years have passed. Maverick w/ a paunch, a bald spot and questionable religious beliefs. Some things belong in the past. Of course I'm not selling the fantasy, and I'm not being any fun. Sorry, as you were.

Could be AWESOME! Maverick is a former hero who has fallen from grace for making a variety of insensitive and inflamatory remarks about the government and the president.
Now, he's just a shell of the man he was, his wife has left him, even Goose's wife no longer speaks to him (having made questionable moral choices herself and generally let herself go). Maverick now fills his days flying for reality shows on the Discovery network, acting as copilot to young actors who fly around in mock air combat battles but Maverick still longs for the glory days.
Longing to feel the loving embrace of an f-14 again, he defects to the only country on earth still flying them... IRAN! Branded a traitor and hunted by Iceman (who has now become a CIA assassin), Maverick learns of a evil plot by the evil Iranians to launch an evil attack against the unsuspecting west! Will maverick remember who his wingman really is? Will maverick make the hard choice to defend truth, justice, and the American way?

They should do it, Tom needs a new hit. And with his whole escape to clear his name thing in most all of his recent movies (Mission Impossible series, Minority Report etc), he defiantly needs a fresh hit. I WILL SEE IT!!!

I'm torn. I actually like Tom Cruise and would love for him to win over the public again. But I'm not sure this is the way to do it.
Still, I'd probably see it.

"Why not trash the memory of a good movie?"
Or, in this case, Top Gun?

Typical lazy journalism from the Sun. Thats just the script that was written during the production of the first movie and which Tom Cruise was signed up for. It never got past the initial stages though due to the cost

The suns script is bogus.
I have seen the real script to the new planned Top Gun 2 Movie.
Its going to be like Top Gun vs Independence day.
Picture this.... Tom aka Maverick is flying around in his F18 to the tune of "high way to the danger zone" when all of a sudden he is briefed that the evil Xenu has returned to the planet Earth to wreck chaos and destruction on us all and the only one who can save us is the mighty midget himself!
Tom has to group up as many Scientologist believers as he can to save the planet Earth all at the same time as fighting against the evil humans on this planet who want to stop the brave freedom fighters, you know the usual crack head medicated, psychology supporting nut balls that seem to make up the population of Western civilization.
So you can see the odds are surely stacked against him!
And wait it doesnt end there. The movie will also help undo all the brainwashing Xenu has done to our poor shells so by going and spending as much cash as you can seeing the movie as many times as you can you can also rid your body of all the thetans that inhabit our bodies. So see the movie about 30,000 times and you will be free people! Thats approx about $300,000 dollars worth of movie time and if you cant afford that you can just buy the DVD when it comes out. Fabulously priced at $150K per movie!
What a blockbuster we are in store for!

well, not only does Top Gun have an amazing soundtrack but it also is one of the greatest films i have ever seen and it's one of those films that you can watch over and over again. Tom cruise plays the part of Maverick unbelievably well and makeing a second Top Gun would be a brilliant idea. If Tom was to play an instructor as that's what he was going to do at the end of Top Gun, then i think it would be a brilliant film. A second Top Gun would be a fabulous idea and having Tom Cruise starring in it again would be an even better idea because i really don't think i'm the only one who loves seeing Tom on the big screen :) I really hope they make a second one and i think the soundtrack will deffinetly be hard to match up in quality of the first film.

Actually, Cruise's camp and the studio has already reported that Tom Cruise will NOT reprise his role as the cocky Maverick. Personally, because of that I don't think I'll watch it. It won't be Top Gun, it'll feel like an entirely different movie. I personally liked the idea of Maverick returning as a instructor. It gave the feel of The Guardian, and that movie was really good.

Who cares about what tom cruise does in real life or on his spare time...THIS IS A MOVIE!!! Whether or not you think tom cruise is crazy for some of the things going or not, SHOULD NOT impact your judgment on a movie...
Top Gun was a great movie for it's time and provided good music that people still enjoy today. Their is just something about it that gets you motivated. Kind of like those Rocky movies...They can live on forever...
Personally, i would pay to see a Top Gun 2. I think it would be interesting to see Maverick as a Top Gun instructer and possible have Iceman come in for a few scenes. (Flaunting his plack on the wall, lol) It could have some good laughs, but they need to focus on the plot, so it doesn't turn out so corny...I'm sure with it being 2008, they will be able to work on that...
It could be a good thing...

I think, if this is true, it has the potential to be awesome! I'm a die hard Top Gun fan, and I would hate to see the original ruined by a crappy throw-back film. But if it's done correctly, and still keeps certain elements of the original, it would be a hit!
How I would do it....
"23 years later...Pete Mitchell (call sign 'Maverick') is a flight instructor at Top Gun, following in the foot steps of his late mentor 'Viper'. Now, 'Maverick' must tame a whole new breed of fighter pilot.
A new up and comer in his F-22 squadron, 'Jumper' (played by Shia Lebouf) and his wing girl 'Daisy' (played by *young female actress*), are sent to Top Gun by the air command in Iraq. However, the two young pilots have an unspoken attraction and have problems working as a pair, as they try to out fly eachother.
It's up to 'Maverick' to teach them the oldest rule about ariel-combat....YOU NEVER LEAVE YOUR WINGMAN...
