Goodbye, Ebert and Roeper -- Hello, Lyons and Mankiewicz!
Yesterday, we learned that At the Movies was changing in a big way. Richard Roeper had decided to leave the show to pursue a new reviewing program, while Roger Ebert sent out a statement saying that he was out as well, that other projects were in the works, and that Disney was taking the show in a new direction. Banking on the buzz whipped up by both of their exits, Variety reports that Disney has announced Roeper and Ebert's replacements -- the much younger Ben Lyons and Ben Mankiewicz. If you happen to follow any other on-screen critics, Lyons (on the right) has been a big part of E!, while also popping up in shows like MSNBC at the Movies and Access Hollywood, while Mankiewicz has been the host for Turner Classic Movies, and has an alt pop culture show on Sirius called "The Young Turks."
Of course, new, young blood also means an update to the format, and Disney says that the show will get a new look and new segments when the new incarnation kicks off on September 6. These changes will include a "Critics Round-Up" that will have the two Bens discussing films with other critics via satellite. I dig the simplicity of the past, so hopefully this whole deal won't get too flashy.
What say you, Cinematical readers? Can Ben and Ben fill the big shoes left by Siskel, Ebert, and Roeper, and do you want to see At the Movies get updated?

It appears that they are taking the show into a much younger look - not necessarily in the direction of giving us better, more insightful movie reviews. B.M. (new trade-mark) might give us something new,but fear the other Ben will be lacking in sooo many areas.
We might give them a look, but will follow Roper, providing he doesn't bring you know who along!

Face it, no one will be able to replace Siskel and Ebert or Ebert and Roeper. I will miss their shows and reviews tremendously. Times and technology are changing [rapidly] so we must give Ben and Ben the chance to bring on a new way of sharing opinions with us. I don't know if they will fail or not,but give them a chance to prove themselves. I hope they bring us honest, intelligent reviews; if not, I'll change the channel.

Meh, I just caught the new format. I'm sorry buuuut it's too damn confusing. You have a whole bunch of reviewers come in. As well as, the two Bens. Too many opinions!!!!!! The original format gave you four options. That's it! You get two guys tell their opinions about the movie. That's all I want to hear.

Siskel & Ebert were the best film critics of all time. The power of their thumbs were feared and celebrated by Hollywood. They shined a light on the little films that were not promoted by the industry because they were not box office blockbusters.
Siskel and Ebert were a tough act to follow, but Roeper was a good replacement.
It is the end of an era, -Two thumbs down for the new replacements, they have much to learn and very large shoes to fill.

this is a dark day for tv - movie criticism. manciewicz is adequate where he is on tcm. lyons ive never heard of; but E is adreadful station-i never watch. i still have the great roger ebert on his web site,so all is not lost!!! i will eagerly await richard roepers re-emergence on tv. i will not watch manc/lyons show at all. siskel and ebert defined movie criticism on tv,nothing needs to be changed. just review the damn films intelligently and with an understanding of the art form ;also review the lesser known art, foreign and independent films!!!!!!!!

Horrible!
The quality and style one could expect from the crap you see in a supermarket checkstand line.
What audience are they trying to draw anyway?
This is very disappointing...

This is horrible. They have gone to far to try and replace Ebert and Roeper. I mean seriously, these guys were my all time favorite critics. I am happy to hear that the two of them have decided to get together for a different show that i will without a moment's hesitation replace At The Movies with. Because it was never about At The Movies, it was about Ebert and Roeper.
And the new guys are basically pathetic imitations of what actual critics are.

This is just insulting. Siskel and Ebert were real critics and real newspapermen. The show had a stripped-down, no-frills, no-hype format, and they had a genuine chemistry. There have been many other attempts to replicate their success, all to no avail. In 1986, Siskel & Ebert went to a different network, and the suits tried to keep the show going with Red Reed and Bill Harris. It failed. This one is liable to do the same. At least I hope so. If it succeeds, it means doom for legitimate critics...

Siskel's passing was a huge blow, but Ebert managed a favorable comeback with Roeper. Ebert's inability to appear was the second blow, but once again, Phillips stepped in to make a winning combination with the ensconced Roeper. But the simultaneous loss of both Roeper and Phillips dealt too harsh a blow; I will not watch "At the Movies," but instead will look forward to Roeper's new show ... the sooner, the better!

It;s funny actually: After Mr. Siskel passed away, Roeper seemed a bit like a red headed stepchild to some of us.. I grew to like him as a lot of you have.. Then duw to more tragedy, Roeper is left as the lead guy, which i thought was a stretch. However, I kept watching, because i knew that Roper and his revolving chair of guest hosts were serious about film. When Michale Phillips was ultimately "the new guy" I was a little bit disappointed that it wasn't A.O. Scott form the New York Times, but i kept watching religiously as always, because it was still carrying on the tradition of the show.. This new format is in no way related to that format and is an insult to our intelligence. It's overstuffed and starving at the same time. I cannot watch it. Using the At The Movies name is the worst possible maneuver. Honestly, if they just called it something else I MIGHT have been more forgiving, but they did and i'm gone baby gone.... G O N E ! !

This new show is the worst. I could only watch part of an episode- hated it. I miss watching real critics giving an intelligent critique of good movies. The new show absolutely does not appeal to any of Ebert and Roeper's fans. It's a total flop! I'm watching Richard Roeper on his new show.

I watched one episode, and it was infinitely worse than I'd imagined--and that's saying something. Tapping a young, clueless dweeb like Lyons was a bad sign to begin with, but the show's producers seem to almost be deliberately trying to wreck a show that has more or less been around 30 years. Gone is the format of two knowledgeable critics intelligently discussing the merits of new films. Instead the new show has a fast-moving, flashy format where more much time is spent trying to make the hosts appear hip than inform movie connoisseurs what they should/should not be seeing. Boy, is this ever an instance of a show not playing to their fans. Imagine if The Sopranos had gotten Aaron Spelling to produce a season, and you'll have some idea how disastrous the new format is.
And that annoying new theme song that keeps getting worked into the show has GOT to go.
Please, somebody wake me when it's over.

I feel better reading these comments. Thank you guys, you are all right! I've been watching Siskel, Ebert, & Roeper since the beginning. This show is not what I set my VCR for. Please, bring back at least Roeper. But Ebert should come back as well. I don't care what he wears around his neck.
