Fan Made: George Lucas Gets Frozen in Carbonite
.jpg)
Um ... Mom, Dad, I totally think I know what I want for Chanukah this year.
As a guest last night on Slashfilm's weekly podcast, we spoke briefly about George Lucas' big mouth ... and why every time someone goes to get a quote from him on whatever, the wrong answer almost always comes out. I seriously half expect the dude to say something like -- "Star Wars? Honestly, I always hated the f**king thing" -- a day or two before Clone Wars hits theaters. Because that's his style; he's awkward and he doesn't know when to just keep things to himself.
His latest interview with the Times Online is full of all sorts of odd quotes, like how he points out the fact that he's not directing Red Tails; that they got "a black director." Dude does have a name, George. There's also stuff on a potential Indiana Jones 5, where Lucas says they'll make one if he comes up with an idea. Nevertheless, above you can see a model of Mr. Lucas frozen in carbonite, which, honestly, might be the perfect place to stick the guy for a little while so he doesn't muck up anything else. These photos (click image above to enlarge) come by way of Bonniegrrl, who snapped them during Celebration Japan. Pretty cool. Me want.
Question: Is Lucas past his prime, or does he have a few more great films left somewhere?

Past his time? That was in 1982. The guy is Mr. Burns now.

We should freeze him sitting on his last three movies and those horrible cartoons.
I gave those prequels the best try, I was patient and let a ton of stuff slip by and insult my intelligence but the other day I started watching Revenge of the Jedi and the acting is so obscenely bad! I accepted reality and realized the man killed my favorite childhood films.

I think his prime was American Graffiti. The truly great/fun films he gets credit for were largely a result of his cowriters, directors, or the charisma of his actors. When he gets carte blanche, we get A New Hope and Episodes III-V. The man can't write dialogue or direct real people.
Unless you're talking the prime of his digital FX obsession, then he's not done yet.

*sigh* so much hate...
The fact is, George knows the score. In that Vanity Fair interview earlier this year, he said that fans would hate this movie, because it's not the one they've been seeing in their heads for the last 19 years. And with that one sentence, he perfectly summed up the reason for the disproportionate level of bullshit outrage that the mere mention of his name can provoke.

It could also be because his writing skills have deteriorated well past the expiry date.

Haha, I love that attitude. Its really a great movie, but its OUR fault for not liking it. Right. That point neatly avoids having to have any discussion about the merits of the movie, and is exactly why Lucas said it. I just can't believe people buy into it. Lucas has insulated himself to the point where no matter how terrible the movie he makes is he will never have to change or adjust his style because its everyone elses fault for not understanding the awesomeness that is Lucas. Give me a break.

Oh, and you know the Carbonite thing was NOT "fan made," don't you? It was a prop for the recent SW Celebration in Japan.

So the people who made it weren't fans of Star Wars?

Past his prime? I'd think we're in salmonella territory by now!

He remains a film visionary with studios like Lucasfilm, THX, ILM, Skywalker Sound, and LucasArts yet as a writer and director....he no longer has it.

Michael Jordan was past his prime when he played for the Washington Wizards...he could still play, but expecting 40 points out of him was pretty unrealistic. Lucas no longer deserves to make movies. Let him do FX, but please, PLEASE keep him away from scripts and directors chairs. Everything he touches stinks.

There are certain "cool" things to hate on the Internet. The Matrix Sequels, Sony, the Star Wars Prequels... and that means pretty much everything George Lucas does.
First off, his digital work is the absolute best in the industry. General Grevious looked completely real, for example. The prequels are not as good as the originals, but they are still good, and would have done very well without the originals behind them. Episode III has the deepest emotional content of any of his movies, and his deepest scene has no dialogue (hard for ANY movie to pull off).
I could go on and on. I don't know if Lucas has more movies in him or not. But he's done very well. Honestly, is it even fair to expect him to have a 100% track record? Even Stanley Kubrick had his Barry Lyndon... and followed it with The Shining.
I do, however, agree that you can't trust anything he says about his movies.
