'Midnight Meat Train' to Make (Very) Select Stops This Weekend
Filed under: Horror, Mystery & Suspense, Lionsgate Films, RumorMonger, Distribution
In a development noted on several horror sites, not the least of which are Shock and BD.com, it appears that Lionsgate is indeed opening the oft-shuffled adaptation of Clive Barker's The Midnight Meat Train on roughly 100 screens this Friday. However, all currently-posted showtimes are at second-run theaters -- otherwise known as dollar theaters, although it never seems to be that cheap anymore, not even on Tuesdays.
In my neck of the woods, one theater has it booked for two evening shows a day, for an engagement that I'm willing to bet will last only one week. The last time I remember a first-run film being shown at this theater, it was the Weinsteins' Feast, although that usually neglectful studio did so as part of a clear strategy to boost general awareness of that movie before its DVD release a month later (and wouldn't you know it, that wasn't a bad flick at all).
Despite all the fuss between Barker and the studio and the frequent release date changes, Scott saw it at Comic-Con and really dug it, and he doesn't seem to be alone among the genre gurus, which leads one to wonder just why Lionsgate would go to such curious lengths to so poorly fulfill a contractual obligation when it seems that fans might, y'know, actually turn out and pay full price to get the grisly goods. (On the flip side, at least it'll hit more cities than Pathology or Rogue did when they were similarly dumped.)
What do you guys think? Are you still interested in catching the film, and if so, do you find yourself inconvenienced by this odd distribution tactic?

Oh, I'm definitely interested in catching the Train, but this is more than an inconvenience considering I can't find a single theater within 40 miles showing it. Even the E Street in DC showed Zombie Strippers. This is ridiculous.

I'm making the trek from Hollywood to Norwalk to catch it over the weekend (only about a 30 min. drive each way). I've been waiting for this movie too long now not to put forth the effort. While I sort of like the idea of seeing it in a low-rent (and hopefully skeezy) bargain theater that'll only add to the grimy atmosphere, I still think Lionsgate have made a really ridiculous decision here. I say it's time for Clive to call up his Cenobite minions and have 'em pay a visit to Lionsgate's offices to sort things out....

According to movietickets.com (Fandango and Moviefone both say times aren't even available for it yet), it's not playing anywhere within a 40 mile radius of New York City. That's f*%#ed. Shame on you, Lionsgate.

I, for one, am miffed. I was planning on seeing it on opening day in San Francisco, but the closest theater is 5 hours (!) away. It's very frustrating that Lionsgate continues to mishandle their potentially good films, like this, "Bug" and "Wristcutters: a Love Story." On the other hand, their DVD division is currently doing some wonderful things (check out their Hitchcock and Renoir box sets), so maybe the theatrical release is just a cursory way to fulfill a contractual obligation and make the DVD sexier to consumers.

I can't believe the crap way this flick has been handled. There was more press for THE HOTTIE & THE NOTTIE --- and *this* one is getting some pretty good response from the target audience. You know. HORROR FANS. The kind who pay MONEY to see HORROR MOVIES.
It's not showing in Austin proper -- but I'm going to make the trek out to Round Rock to see it on the big screen. I figure there will be plenty of seats available.

It's kind of a bitch since it 's coming to Phoenix , Arizona (Unlike "Pathology") but the problem is, that it's only showing in 1 theater...Yeah and it's the cheap theater too (Silver Cinemas Bell Road )...It's a bitch with the high gas prices it's almost a 45 minute drive just 1 way to the theater! & in phoenix on Saturday it's supposed to be around 113 degrees too!
But since I have seen the trailer at least 2 xs ont eh big screen I'm going to do it!
What is shitty when I called Lions Gate to see if Phoenix, Az was gettting the film they told me yes, & they also told me that AMC theaters would be getting it!
They Lied!!

I lucked out- it is coming to the nearest theater to my house; one that I walk to on a semi-regular basis. (Though August heat makes me want to bypass the exercise).
But the whole thing is ridiculous- 30-45 minute drives in major metros, no screenings in f-ing NYC! They are making a statement, and I look forward to B-D's complete article on this.

I checked again this morning...the nearest theaters to NYC are either all the way up in Rochester or else three hours west in Pennsylvania. Jersey and Long Island don't have 2nd run theaters??

According to the rumor mill and many folks on imdb.com, the drop release of this as well as the unexpected firing of the new Punisher films director during Post-production is a personal vendetta.
The new President who has been very vocal of his dislike towards the old Pres supposedly is dropping this in theaters only for contract reasons. MMT was a passion project for the old president of Lionsgate and a big risk, throwing down 15 mill on a film like this. The plan originally was 1500 screens and grow if it was succesful, but supposedly out of spite for the old Pres and his passion for the film, the new Pres changed everything.
Also the dropping of the Punisher director right before it was finished is just stupid.

This makes me pretty sick...
Seriously... I've been waiting for this movie for over a year now... They kept pushing the release date and now if I want to see it in a theater I have to drive 2.5+ hours into the middle of nowhere in PA (which I might be crazy enough to do if my car was fixed and I could afford the gas) to see it. I can't describe the amount of disappointment.

What is BS...is that every Friday I pick up the "The Arizona Republic" (Phoenix, AZ largest newspaper!) to read all the movie reviews .....scan over the movie posteres etc...Preatty much plan my "Movie Going" weekend...
Well anyways, on 08/01/08, the entertainment section of "The Arizona Republic" doesn't make 1 single mention of "The Midnight Meat Train"...NOT 1 MOVIE REVIEW....NOT 1 MOVIE POSTER...NOTHING ...NADDA....Zip...Zero...Zeltch ..The only way you would ever know that "The Midnight Meat Train" came to a Phoenix area theater was either looking through all the movie theaters listings, or moviefone...!! BS BS!!
Thanks CInematical for this article...this is probably the only way I would have ever known it was coming to a local theater.
Hell, the 2 (two) theaters that are showing "The Midnight Meat Train" are these really cheap Super Saver theater which are a throw back to the Grindhouse days! LOL! Gotta love it!

SO HERE'S WHAT TO DO:
-Go to FANDANGO.com and find a showing of Midnight Meat Train and purchase a ticket (if you can find a theater that actually allows you to purchase online), or two, or ten (I'm going to go buy ten immediately following this post) - they're only a dollar or two, so consider it a donation to horror!
- Also, if you see the film is playing in a different theater than any listed below, please send me an e-mail to submit@bloody-disgusting.com
- Most Important: Spread the word, post it on blogs, talk about it in forums, get your fellow horror fiends to purchase tickets! Show fans where it's playing, let's try and fill these theaters!
-Send an e-mail around to your co-workers ASAP (the day is ending)
-Digg this story (see above), it will help spread the word
-Start with Friday showings as it's getting late already. Hit 'em where it hurts, we sell these suckers out, we win the battle. A big battle.
-Lastly, put MMT TICKETS in the subject line and e-mail your receipts to submit@bloody-disgusting.com, the person who purchases the most tickets will be sent a very special "thank you" package from Bloody-Disgusting

I don't know if this is even considered current still. I just wanted to say that living in Korea for 1 year has its advantages. I get to see it at my town's local theater on opening day, Aug 14. Right after work I'm going to ride my bike to the theater and watch this movie. I think lionsgate made a huge mistake and probably pissed off the director...we'll be lucky if he ever agrees to direct another American movie!
