Catch the Bargain 'Midnight Meat Train'!
Filed under: Horror, Lionsgate Films, Fandom, Distribution, Exhibition

When was the last time you saw a first-run movie on opening night and paid just $1.75? Hardcore horror flick The Midnight Meat Train has been relegated to second-run theaters in its limited, 100-screen release this weekend, as William Goss nicely detailed for us. (Thanks to commenter Christopher for pointing out that Dread Central compiled a very handy list of theaters.) Let me testify: watching the movie at a theater with cheap seats did not enhance the experience.
Here's why: The Midnight Meat Train is a very good flick -- I agree completely with our own horror hound Scott Weinberg that "it's one of the most effective horror films of the year" -- and horror fans who sought it out deserved to see it in the best possible environment. I was fortunate in that one of the six theaters playing it in the Dallas / Ft. Worth Metroplex is only about 10 miles away, though I had a devil of a time finding it. Unfortunately, the theater has seen better days, the seating layout is not optimal, and the audio equipment is lacking.
It felt surreal to watch the far inferior The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor at a Cinemark complex with great sound and a huge screen and then travel 10 miles to see The Midnight Meat Train at another Cinemark complex with sound that lacked any oomph and a much smaller screen. Nonetheless, the 9:25 p.m. show drew a mixed crowd of 60-70 people, despite zero advertising in the local newspapers, and folks seemed satisfied with what they saw.
As I walked to the parking lot, I overheard one group talking about it; one of the guys said, "My leg kept on shaking from nerves!" and one of the girls said, "I really liked the dark red color of the blood -- it wasn't that fire engine red crap." Imagine how many people would have happy memories tonight if Lionsgate actually made it convenient to see the stinking movie!
( Editor's Note: For more on this sad state of affairs, check out the surprisingly different viewpoints from Shock, Bloody-Disgusting, and one of our readers' own blogs: Horror's Not Dead. And thanks for the shout-out, Pete! Glad you liked the movie! -SW )

Flick's not playing within 40 miles of Philadelphia. Last time I checked we were the 5th or 6th largest city in the country. Doesn't look to be playing anywhere in D.C. either.
A writer at this very blog who lives in L.A. had to drive 20+ miles to find the nearest theater. Not even sure if he bothered.

I'm in San Francisco without a car this weekend and won't be able to see the thing at all.

Caught the film tonight with a crowd of roughly thirty people, and enjoyed it as well, despite some similarly subpar seating and sound.

This listing of theaters is well under 100. I've been trying to search around to find if maybe it is playing somewhere near the NYC metro area that's not listed on Fandango (or other ticket sites), but so far no luck.

It's not playing within 100 miles of Portland, yet it's in TWO theaters in the greater Salt Lake City area. I lived there for 10 years, so trust me when I say that there is not a sufficient demand for "Midnight Meat Train" in the greater Salt Lake City to justify putting it in two theaters. Clearly Lionsgate was choosing second-run houses purely at random.

i think the portland second run theatres with their outrageous (sarcasm)2.50-3.00 admission may have scared lionsgate. They truly went out of their way to find Dollar theatres...i mean that pic alone .50 cent tuesdays????
Two weeks till cinema21 see you there.

Remember stuff like this when the movie studio's and distributers are bleating that downloading is killing their industry and leaving theaters empty.
I know people who's only access to low budget indie flicks (usually the best movies of any year) is from downloading from the web. These people would much prefer to go and watch them in a cinema somewhere. Hell it is even next to impossible to find them once they are on DVD nowadays. My local video store will have 67 shelves of the new Eddie Murphy flick and very little room for anything else.
I would love to be against movie piracy and would love for a world where it does not need to exist. But the simple truth is for many of the independent movies being released at the moment then a very large chunk of their audience is going to be watching on a downloaded copy.
Blame the downloaders all you want but as cases like this prove there often is no way to pay and watch the movie. Hell this movie has not even got a release date for Australia yet, a country of over 20 million English speaking people and yet it is deemed not worthy of sending even one print over here.
I know that downloading is a crime but c'mon Lionsgate, why on earth in the year 2008 should the only way to see a movie be to steal it?
The studio's really need to stop criminalizing their customers and actually do something about their out of touch distribution methods.

Thanks for the article Cinematical! I'm going to catch a 10:20PM showing in Michigan - I'm only home for the weekend and this theater's closer than the nearest one to me in Tempe!
I'm dragging a friend to it and he absolutely hates horror/suspense but I coerced him into it...there's a very good chance that he'll walk out :p

Not playing within at least 100 miles of New York. Total bullshit. Largest media market in the US, and I'm completely shut out of a movie I actually want to see. Fuck you, Lions Gate. If I can get a bootleg copy, I'm watching it.
