Robert De Niro Heading Into 'Edge of Darkness'

If you're going to return to the big screen after a long break and a big scandal, it probably helps to have the biggest co-star you can grab. It looks like Mel Gibson has done exactly that with his upcoming Edge of Darkness, because according to Variety, Robert De Niro is in talks to join the cast.Edge is a big-screen remake of the 1985 BBC miniseries, and it centers on Thomas Craven, a Boston detective, whose 24-year-old daughter is murdered on the front steps of their home. Assuming he was the target, Craven begins investigating the murder, only to discover a startling conspiracy that reaches into high levels of government. Robert De Niro will play an operative sent to clean up the evidence, which probably means he'll engage in fisticuffs with Gibson at some point. The movie is set to begin filming this month in Massachusetts, and has a SAG waiver to continue if a strike occurs.
As I've stated before, I'm really looking forward to seeing Gibson acting again, and I love the idea of him pairing up with De Niro. It's a casting combination that I'm surprised hasn't happened before. I just hope the film, and its performances, can be judged on its own merit and not condemned because of Gibson's past behavior. And with that, I ask you to try and remain civil in the comments!

I'm usually pretty tolerant of remakes, and always try to judge them on their own merits rather then compare them to the original.
But Edge of Darkness is one of my favourite ever telivision series, and is among the best the British have ever produced. I really can't see a film doing it justice.

Mel Gibson's acting chops have never been in question. For the most part his performances have always been very good. DeNiro's skills are always brilliant. It will be interesting how these two very large persona's will co-exsist on screen. The DeNiro- Pachino tandem in heat was decent, because the two characters pretty much had their own stories and very rarely encountered one another. It can sometimes be hard to watch two heavyweights in the same moment doing battle because neither of them usually wins, which can be uneventful for the viewer. We're used to seeing these big stars steal all of the scenes and carry the entire movie. Ultimately it will come down to the quality of the script, and the filmmakers ability to tell the story.

I love the idea of this movie and think it will be great to see Mel on the big screen again. He is an incredible actor and this should make an incredible duo with DeNiro. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I'm thrilled we're going to see Mel on the big screen again after he swore he was done with acting. I love DeNiro, and like you am surprised this pair up never happened before. Now I've got two TV series on my Netflix, Edge of Darkness and Second Sight.
Good luck Mel.

apart from the fact that the plot does not really sound anything like the British TV (which dealt with nuclear dumping or something like that - its been a while) this sounds good. I do wonder why they kept the name when they have not really seemed to keep the plot (al la The Postman - will never forgive Costner for ruining the source material on that).

Mel Gibson and Robert De Niro, now thats what I call a lethal pair of a combination. Lets not forget Mel's Payback in the past it was one of those 5 star action/gangster style flicks and the fact that De Niro is pairing with Gibson, wow! no doubts this will be an interesting movie, like when De Niro paired with Pacino in Heat.
jst beatiful, these guys are my favourite actors in hollywood they are both straight out people no mucking around behind the camera, got to love them, cant wait
