About That 'Goonies' Sequel Rumor ...

We go through a lot of rumors here at Cinematical, some of which eventually turn out to be true and some false. We normally don't spend a whole lot of time on each rumor; if we're in a position to track down "the real truth" fairly easily, we'll do so. If not, we'll let it slide and see where it goes. The other day, Moviehole came out with some pretty big news: That Warner Bros. was in the beginning stages of putting together a Goonies sequel and that some of the original cast would be involved. Pretty BIG DEAL if you ask me -- Goonies is, like, The Bible for some movie freaks (including me).
That said, we simply had to put this rumor through the wringer. And while we were unable to track down Moviehole's source, we did speak to multiple people "in the know" and they claim it's not at all true. In fact, they suggest this Goonies sequel might be getting confused with a film called Treehouse Gang, which is very similar to Goonies and is actually being described as "Warner's Goonies." That film follows a group of childhood friends/explorers who meet up at their 10-year reunion and wind up on a treasure-hunting adventure. Definitely sounds like the perfect Goonies sequel if, ya know, they filmed it when all those guys were in their late 20s, not late 30s.
Then again, perhaps there's a big cover up taking place and Warners really is secretly working on a Goonies sequel. That we do not know. However, I feel pretty confident in saying that it ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

God damnit! I wanted to see Josh Brolin reprise his role as Brand Walsh.

"we simply had to put this rumor through the ringer"
That should be "wringer," as in, "the truth will be wrung out."

"king zilch"
That should be "King Zilch", as in a name, which is a proper noun and should be capitalized.

Erik,
As you know, I'm a writer/producer, and was developing a film with Warner in 2006. Spent most of the year holed up in the Burbank bunker. I still keep in touch with many of the writers and execs there at the compound. One of the writers told me he pitched a Goonies sequel to Warner last month - - - their response? “We’ve already got writers on Goonies 2. And you’ve pitched it as a direct to video release – we’re not going DTV with this one, it’s a major release”.
That's how this came about. I'm fairly confident he's on the money.

Disney wasn't making Tron 2 either... they managed to keep that secret. Why couldn't Warner do the same?
But as much as I'd like a Goonies sequel, they would probably screw it up anyway. They should just leave it alone.
Goonies is a modern classic.

According to Corey Feldman, Sean Astin and Josh Brolin in seperate interviews, Goonies is gonna happen and production started this summer. Google has the Astin interview, A&E the Feldman interview and You tube has the Josh Brolin interview. Supposedly the entire original cast will be in it and a replacement for the late Ann Ramsey. I have been anticipating this sequel for a very long time and just hope it will be nothing like the disaster Lost Boys 2 turned out. Let's just hope Donner/Spielsberg aren't looking to squeeze some quick millions out of the name and ruin the film's original storyline like most of the big shots are doing to all of the great classics. Just like Wall Street, movies are a business and unfortunately the big producers/directors are sucking the movie industry dry the same way bankers/brokers are this country. By the way, the movie based on this will be called "No Country For Middle Class". God help us!
