Shane Black Writing 'Lethal Weapon 5'?

The franchise reboots may never end. According to ComingSoon.net (who spotted it on TrackingB.com), Shane Black has written a spec script for Lethal Weapon 5 without really telling anyone but Joel Silver. The story would center around Riggs' impending retirement (and his, undoubtedly, being too old for ... well, you know). But before he leaves the force, he has to tackle one last case, and as there are no other police officers in Los Angeles, he hauls Murtaugh out of retirement to help him. Allegedly, both Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are interested, though no deals have been signed.
Now, I name drop Lethal Weapon enough that you undoubtedly know that the series ranks much higher in my life than it probably should. Watching it in my pre-teens not only taught me a choice vocabulary, it rocked my world with glimpses at a naked Mel Gibson. My problems with men probably stem from the pedestal I have placed Martin Riggs upon.
But, that doesn't mean I want a fifth movie -- I already sat through the fourth installment, and it wasn't that good. Black has penned some fantastic scripts in his time -- and I firmly believe A Long Kiss Goodnight is insanely underrated -- and I'd love to see him churning out action-comedies again. But not ones with Riggs and Murtaugh. Let Lethal Weapon lie, and write a franchise that can give us a new badass or two. Whatever Shane Black does next, whether it's Lethal Weapon 5 or Predator 3: Hawkins' Revenge, I'll be at the theater with popcorn in hand. The guy is absolutely genius.
For those unfamiliar with said mad skills, go check out Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. Then, perhaps, you'll discover what I'm talking about.

A Long Kiss Goodnight and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang would make the perfect double feature - but I'm a whore for Shane Black that way.

My husband and I have a general debate of which is better Lethal Weapon or Die Hard. I go for Lethal Weapon and he Die Hard. There is one thing that I have to agree with him about tho, the last Lethal Weapon was terrible, unlike the last Die Hard which I actually found enjoyable. I have nothing against the DH films u see, just don't like them as much as the LW ones, until the last LW anyway.
At this point with Hollywood restarting everything else, I dont think that i would be opposed to a "restart." Besides after all the stunts that Mel Gibson's crazy ass has pulled of late, I'm not real sure I want him to ever act or anything else again...

I for one rank Lethal Weapon among my favorite movies, and I think Shane Black is one of my favorite Hollywood writers, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was one of the best movies I've seen in recent memory. HOWEVER, I don't really want to see a lethal weapon 5, because 4 WASN'T really all that good and I want to see him do something new, fresh, and exciting, and it will still be awesome.

While Long Kiss Good night and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang were both great movies, but Lethal Weapon (and Die Hard) should have stopped after the second one. Really after the first, but at least the second ones were entertaining with characters that seemed related to the originals.
Both LW & DH are among my favorite movies of all time because they had great action, intelligence, dark humor, and human characters. Sequals turned LW into silly buddy action/comedies and DH into just more dumb action. Not that there isn't a place for either (they both can be entertaining), but don't call them Lethal Weapon or Die Hard (even if Mel & Bruce are the stars).
My request: Leave Lethal Weapon, Riggs & Murtaugh alone and develop more original ideas (like KKBB and LKG). (Though if LW5 does come out, I'll want to like it.)

As much as I'd like to think this could actually be good, if Mr. Black were too take LW back to its original roots, I'd really prefer he just leave things alone. Please, Mel and Danny, don't do this! Let us remember Riggs and Murtaugh like they were in the first Lethal Weapon. I don't want to see another buddy cop action comedy, and as much as I love both these actors, I really don't want to sit through LW-5 .

I recently bought all of the Lethal Weapon DVD's and I have to say that the first is amazing. 2-4 got sillier as they progressed. But I was surprised at how bad 3 AND 4 really were. However I still very much enjoyed watching them and if Shane Black writes it (LW5) I will be there!

I think the only way this would work is if they let the Riggs character go back to being a bad ass without age affecting him. The 3rd and 4th movies lost their appeal because he seemed washed up. They kept Indy cool. Do the same for Riggs. People go to these movies to cheer for the good guy instead of worrying whether or not he breaks a hip.

I think a Lethal Weapon 5 will be super greate! We are all waiting for it to happen!
I will love to see Mel Gibson as Riggs again!
But i have to agree that turning it as action comedy was getting exagerated.. it turned out silly. The action part was still greate, so i will have to disagree with some here, LW 3 and 4 were real awesom as what action goes.
but i would like that together with the LW atmosphere of LW 1 and 2.
The 1 was super, with suicidal cop, with an alcohol problem, that was super.
We want to see some more Gibosns body, naked, so that will be cool, they show womens all naked so why dont they show mens privates? LOL!
Thats discrimination.
But could turned out to be very expensive if he was to do so, and very giving at the box office as well.. LOL!
I love the humor of that movie, so more of Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, and less of side kicks actors, who were greate, alright, but a bit too silly and difficult to implement at the end.
I am sure it will be a greate one.
Why not put Gibson/Donner to direct it?
Mel got more talent than Donner, so it will be really greate. As for the script, I am sure that they can make one themselves.. since the time they have been acting it, they surely got tons of idea as for what could happen next..
I know i have.
I cant even imagine how someone can compare Die Hard with Lethal Weapon and even less Bruce Willis with Mel Gibson! We know that Die hard was a plagiat of LW, anyway, and Mel Gibson is a far better actor than Bruce Willis. MG kick ass and got a kick ass body, Bruce willis can only kick himself about it.. ;D
I know that a Lethal Weapon 5 is going to make the entry, thats for sure, and will be greate.
As for those saying that Mal is better in other kind of movies and that they would like him using his talent there, hello, didnt you saw other movies of him but LW 1-4???
He is already on the making of 4 other movies: Sam and Georges, The Edge of Darkness, Under and Alone, and now Lethal Weapon 5.. to come out in 2008, 2009 and 2010..and add to that all the movies he play into and directed in the past 10 years. Like What Women Want, We Were soldiers, Ransom, Payback, The Patriot, The Singing Detective, and a bunch of TV films and of course The Passion of Christ and Apocalypto.. not bad in just 10 years..
Agree with keeping people looking good and young and beautifull as in the first one, and as they did for Indiana Johns, but Ê, this isnt some indiana johns stuff, and it was more than, ehem, missed the ball in trying to do so dont you think? I mean, the guy dont look like in indiana 1.. so thats the prove that it cannot be done, and it made the movie look a bit sluggish.. And second, how is Mel going to sink his balls into one of those super tight blue jeans, and wear those white baskets, who are no longer for sale anyway, without looking a bit old fashion and even passé? ( and get badly injured in the process, btw.. :/)
I mean its going to be hard enough to make those car chassing by foot, running like in Gallipoli, age 52, without also having to do it, in a SM suit who hinder your moves..
I recall to love his cat-like side step in those LW 1 and 2.. and little side jumps.. hop! hop! Very sexy too.. you can only do that wearing those jeans. LOL! they are so tight you better not try to make a grand ècart, like a ballerine, or even strech your legs 15 cm appart.. ooops! it will make the stuff strech up right behind your legs, giving your private a push up in direction of your brain, AW! AW! not good for free thinkers!
So no, let the guys be like they are, but, i want Riggs mad, as always.
Mel giving himslef some smacks to show the drug dealers how mad he was, in front of a trunck fill with christmas trees, was just too good. I love that scene.
One thing i regret is his hair dress from LH 1 and 2. That was good.
He might have to let them grow or wear a wig, we dont care, just get back into that one, it looks too good.
LOL!
And go around L.A. naked, like in Apocalypto! LOLOL!
