Columbia is Getting 'Goosebumps'

If you were a young whippersnapper in 1992, chances are the Goosebumps books were a lurid staple on your bedside table. My sister was an enormous fan, whereas I preferred, shockingly, Star Wars novelizations and sword-and-sorcery. I was just a little too old for their goofy twist endings -- although the single one I read gave me nightmares, I think because a dog was killed or something. (Let's ascribe it to a fragment of underdone potato, shall we?) In retrospect, you really are what you read as a kid -- my sister went on to a lifelong love of Stephen King and Edgar Allen Poe, whereas I memorized Beowulf. Well, now they will get to terrorize and influence even more children, because Goosebumps is coming to the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia bought the rights to R.L. Stine's endless series in May, and has now hired Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander to pen a script. Columbia is hoping to turn it into a franchise -- and since there are 62(!) books currently lining bookshelves round the world, they will have plenty of material to choose from. It's not clear which book they will adapt first, or if the film will be a hodgepodge of several. At this time, no director is attached, though producer Neal Moritz already has an eye for casting. He wants unknown children, and well-known adult actors in supporting roles.
Many of the books are homages to classic horror films, like Night of the Living Dead and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. If the books inspired a love of horror literature in my sister, perhaps the films will create a whole new generation of Scott Weinbergs. I know there's probably a number of Goosebumps readers out there so share your fond memories, nightmares and I-hope-they-film-this-one thoughts below ....

I wonder what kind of audience they're going to go after with these movies. Are they going to keep it aimed at the under 12 crowd or are they going to go for the nostalgic 20+ crowd who read the books when they were kids?

I would hope they'd go a safe PG-13 as another commenter said, but with a 20 something cast. That would be a good middle ground that would appeal to all fans, old and new. Look at how good most PG-13 movies do at the box office, and the Goosebumps books never were known for being about crazed murderers and violent gore. They were about wacky horror stories with huge twist endings. And I think Columbia should keep the movies that way.
Thinking about it just gives me goosebumps.

I loved this series back in elementary school, the Night of the Living Dummy books were the best. Monster Blood was great, too. I thought there were waaay more than 62 books, though...

There were, including Goosebumps 2000 (The series' newer name at it reached the 100s), and the Goosebumps Choose Your Own Adventure Books. If I were to guess, The Goosebumps books totaled about 150+ (Just look on Amazon for proof)
I always felt they didn't get a big enough audience. The stories were excellent, and unlike anything you'll ever read today. It's a great thing to hear.
I don't think they could go wrong no matter which they choose to do first... I was just looking at the Monster Blood cover and all of the Night of the Living Dummy books. R.L. was such an innovator, look how much he has been ripped off since then. Time he gets his due (Really hope he has a big role in the production of these, otherwise I have no hope for them whatsoever).

Well I would hope the Goosebumps movies would be PG-13 because some really were scary. I remember one with the puppet named Slappy and that one made me afraid. I still to this day hate Marionettes. They always looked like they would kill you in your sleep. No Puppet master ever made them nice looking only scary. I am 21 so they really did wreck me. I know they will not come out and kill me. Just Marionettes are the only ones that give me a fright every other versions of puppets are fine. Heck I even took up puppetry because I loved watching the Muppets. I just never did any thing with Marionettes. So to me Goosebumps are a great series and some were really great. I also loved when Nick made some of them into TV shows. So if Columbia can get the feel of the books I could see many Goosebump movies. I just hope they are PG-13.
