Christopher Nolan Wants WHO to Play Catwoman?!
Filed under: Action, Casting, Warner Brothers, RumorMonger, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Although we're chalking this up to the overeager and rarely reliable British press (England & Scotland, I love you, but your tabloids are crazy), it bears reporting anyway. According to The Telegraph, Cher is said to be in talks with Christopher Nolan to play Catwoman in the third Batman film. Says some anonymous studio executive: "Cher is Nolan's first choice to play Catwoman. He wants to her to portray her like a vamp in her twilight years. The new Catwoman will be the absolute opposite of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry's purring creations."
The same article also reports Johnny Depp as having signed to play the Riddler -- and we all know that isn't true. No one knows which villains will appear in the third film. Even Nolan's participation is still up in the air, despite all of this breathless casting speculation, fan art, and fierce "Will they work in Nolan's gritty real-world setting?" debate.
Now, don't get me wrong -- I actually love Cher and I think she could make a pretty cool Catwoman. But if Nolan does do a third film, and if he does include Catwoman, I want an actress that's closer in age to Christian Bale. I'm not trying to be ageist, it's more that I see Catwoman's career as being a parallel to Batman's, much like the Joker. I want that Batman: Year One story. But should they ever make The Dark Knight Returns (and there was much chatter after Comic Con that Frank Miller and Zack Snyder were at some kind of unofficial agreement on making it, so who knows), I nominate Cher to be the retired Selina Kyle. An older Catwoman deserves someone as awesome as Cher to play her -- not the broken down wreck she was in the book. What do you think, readers? Cher for Catwoman and Nolan, or do you prefer the Angelina Jolie fantasy casting?

They also list a title and an early '09 production start "in Vancouver."
So if the preposterous Cher/Depp casting didn't tip you off that it was BS, announcing a title and a rapidly approaching production start date for a script on which no one has yet to pick up a pen should probably tip you off.
And would you really believe they'd go all low rent in Vancouver after Nolan was so enamored with on-location shooting in Chicago last time around?

Exactly Bob. Keep it in your pants people. There is no script, no annoucement, no writers, no nothing. A vacuum of news does not create legitimacy of rumors.

Nothing's wrong with Northern Ireland or Wales -- I just rarely see the kind of lurid tabloid stories come out of either province. The English and Scottish press are pretty notorious.

I would rather see Betty White as catwoman!
They should just wait a few years before doing anything.

How about Elizabeth Banks as catwoman. I would like to see her do something new besides W.

I think Crispin Glover would be a good Riddler. He's a darker, creepy, odd looking guy. He's not so well known where he'll steal the movie or have an obvious start power (just like every other Batman character actor), but he's not a nobody with no cred at all. With the dark twisted feel of the new Batman movies, you can't have a fun giddy Riddler like Jim Carey was. We need someone almost like the Joker who's mind is so dark and tormented that he'd be able to do the things he does.

Wow, you guys are late on this story. But I think we can all agree it's complete BS (like a lot of stories from The Telegraph).
Personally from those fan made pictures I'm all for David Tennant as The Riddler in the next flick. I think he'd be amazing and bring a great sense of humor to the role.

No way this is true, and please keep catwoman out of the "Nolanverse." But if there must be a catwoman, then either Emily Blunt or rachel McAdams should get the role. As far as the Riddler goes, i would l ike to see either Ryan Gosling or Sam Rockwell, but in a dream world daniel-day lewis would get the role.

Cher as a mentor for a new Catwoman would work I think. Crispen Glover as anything is a great idea. That dude has creepy in spades.

I agree with most that cher would be a good catwoman but only in Frank Millers storyline, and hall as riddler would be good but he has been established as the reporter in DK. But my choices would be to bring back Halle Berry as catwoman and Adrain Brody as the Riddler anybody remember the kiss from the oscars. Angelina Jolie would be my second guess at the cat, Jack Black as the penguin, and Patrick Stewart as Mr. Freeze.

it's funny that all of the old Joker casting theories are being brought up now for Riddler. Brody, Depp, and, of course, the ever-present Glover, heh. Those aren't bad choices, but i feel like I'm reading a TDK speculation forum thread from 2 years ago.
When they announced Ledger I was one of the first to say "I don't see it" so as of now I'm for whomever the hell Nolan wants.

Elisabeth, if this story was from one of the many stupid, celebrity obsessed and rumour filled tabloids in Britain then I would agree with you.
But the Daily Telegraph is one of the few "real" British newspapers left and very rarely resorts to the crap reporting that the scandal sheets love to explore. They still have some of the worlds best journalists working for British papers and the Telegraph and Times have the majority.
I would imagine that there is something to this story, no matter how small it is.
P.S. We are talking about British newspapers, Britain which comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

I agree that Catwoman should be played by someone that is closer in age to Christian Bale.
To be honest with you, I do not believe Angelina is a good choice: it is just too obvious. For a sexy Catwoman, we already have Michelle. Angelina would be just like L(eather)ara Croft against Batman.
I would be very interested in seeing a Catwoman that is not just a babe. Perhaps give her a bit of a philosopher's side, and of course a witted personality. Something different, and unexpected. Like it was seeing Katie Holmes in Batman Begins: a pleasant surprise (finally, a Batman girl with personality and own beliefs).
