Haley Joel Osment Making His Comeback on Broadway
Filed under: Casting, Celebrities and Controversy
We hadn't heard from child star extraordinaire Haley Joel Osment for a while -- at least not in any productive way. His last film (not counting the unreleased Home of the Giants) was the mediocre 2003 coming-of-ager Secondhand Lions; since then, news about him has mostly involved car accidents and drunk driving. But thankfully, things seem to be turning around. The actor, now 20 years old, will star in this fall's Broadway revival of David Mamet's challenging American Buffalo, alongside John Leguizamo and Cedric the Entertainer. I'm assuming that he'll be taking on the role of teenaged Bobby, played by Sean Nelson in the 1996 film. Not a huge part, but being one of a cast of three on Broadway certainly isn't trivial. So few child stars make a successful transition into adult careers, but an actor of Osment's caliber deserves one. (The Sixth Sense is all well and good, but A.I.'s "David" was a masterpiece.) Now that he's no longer an adorable moppet, he should probably aim for "character actor" rather than "star." If that's the goal, then American Buffalo seems like a step in the right direction; there are few things like a little Mamet to establish some thespian street cred.
The play starts previews on October 31st and opens in November.

He's 20!? It's like they choose what age to be.

It's not like he hasn't been doing anything. He did the voice acting for Sora in the Kingdom Hearts series.

Gawd, I know! D= (And then Gallagher did Riku, and Pannetierre did Kairi, but they never get any mentions of their voice acting work when people talk about 'what they've done' in the new. D< It's still acting, people. D< Why do they choose to ignore it? Ticks me off! D< )
And he did a pretty decent job there, too. =3
Not his forte... apparently the guy does better on screen, and I guess the same goes for the other two... but he still did really well in that role! D=

As a child he was an exceptional actor and most child actors are cute, but not always talented. He was TALENTED and is blessed to also be a nice looking young man.

I thought he was only like 17, but i guess i was thinking more of his sister, since she's like 16 or 15 and in Hannah Montana. I wish more articles about him would discuss his video game career, since Kingdom Hearts was GREAT and one of the most popular games of their years. Hopefully 'Sora' is doing better in his career than 'Roxas' is (Jesse McCartney) since Jesse got kicked off Disney for his 'I'm Leavin'' music video.

In addition to his voice acting career (still legitimate acting) second hand lions was an excellent film with an excellent cast in addition to osmond and a wonderfully shot and constructed story.

This reviewer needs to get another job. Lions was great and he's still an adorable "moppet". This guy is clueless. I'm betting Haley Joel will be excellent on Broadway.

I hope if he really wants to continue in films that he hires a better agent and guide. His great talent deserves roles in the best films yet to come. I hope he teams with Speilberg again someday. There is no reason why he can't work forever, whatever his age, and be remembered as one of America's filmic greats.

I completely disagree with Eugene Novikov. Second Hand Lions is a beautifully made film that my family and I love. We believe it's one of Osment's films to remember. I want to see him in starring roles and will be first in line to see him star in upcoming films at the theatre. He'll transition fine from child star as an adult serious film actor if given the chance. His fan base has all the confidence in the world in him.
