Guns and Gloom Dominate New 'Max Payne' Trailer
Filed under: Action, Thrillers, 20th Century Fox, Games and Game Movies, Trailers and Clips
I must admit that, after watching this new trailer on Yahoo! Movies for upcoming actioner Max Payne, I'm still not entirely sure what to make of it, but I'm willing to predict this much: it won't be boring.
Having not played the games, I can't speak for much faithfulness beyond the incorporation of slo-mo, but beyond that, this strikes me as some sort of cross between The Punisher (as Mark Wahlberg's eponymous NYC cop has lost his family to criminals) and Constantine (seriously, what's with the angelic demons here?).
That's not necessarily a bad thing, mind you -- for a video game adaptation, this thing looks pretty slick and atmospheric so far -- but how will this flick play out under an assured PG-13 rating? Doesn't that somewhat defeat the purpose of anything titled 'Max Payne' (or anything starring Mila Kunis for that matter)?
Regardless, Max-ish Payne opens on October 17th, opposite the teen-targeting (but R-rated) romp Sex Drive and Oliver Stone's controversy-magnet-in-waiting, W.

I was a huge fan of Max Payne 1 and 2 on the PC. Both games just had the right amount of violence, gunplay, vengeance, humor, and gloomy atmosphere.
I don't think it will be a problem for fans of the game that this is PG-13 (see: The Dark Knight). There was not an excessive amount of blood or guts in the game as I recall, more about the diving over stuff and shooting in slo-mo.
Definitely checking this one out

Oh, and the angels flying around? I imagine they are Max's delusions... he is obviously pretty upset about the loss of his loved ones,(as shown in the trailer) and he sees the world as a much darker place than it is.
In the game, he went into some pretty deep delusions, though I don't remember any "Valkyries" specifically.

All i can ask is: Don't suck like The punisher, Constantine... and Hitman. One or two good scenes in each of those.
And better make a nice character out of Kunis. Not that bimbo in hitman, who was there to put breasts to the whole affair.

Has anyone at Cine played the games? It feels like every post on the movie is prefaced with "Having never played the games..."
Anyway - the "angels" would be the Valkyries. In the games, Max is a DEA agent, and the drug of choice is Valkyr, which causes hallucinations of Valkyries. It has a strong Norse theme running through it.
Not that the Valkyries are actually seen in the game that I recall...

When Erik Davis covered the first trailer, he fessed up to having played some of them (http://www.cinematical.com/2008/07/10/max-payne-gets-a-dark-trailer/), but in all fairness, we're not a gaming blog and don't exactly mandate that all movie-inspiring games be played as such.
Which isn't to say that I shouldn't dust off my PS2...

Can't wait for this. The angels & demons are most certainly hallucinations from Valkyr.

I really hope they are hallucinations and that they didn't decide to throw random supernatural elements into the plot just because.
But if so, then the trailer is lying to people by making them think it is supernatural, and not just a crime movie.

This will fail as many actions have in recent years and it has everything to do with the below R rating and material suitable for young teens. Its sad but true and no action has compared to those of the past basically all carrying an R rating and I think it has alot to do with the average males fight fantasy after a certain age easily being worthy of NC-17 to xxx ratings....
Hollywood sucks they just want a wider audience for more money and this movie will be nothing more than good special effects that get old fast into the plot. A plot which no one goes to see a film like this for anyhow.

Having played both games im accually rather dissapointed in what is seen in the trailer, (not to say im not going to still see it) not too keen on the whole angels/demons theme going on here and having ludacris (however he spells it) as Deputy Bravura is not my idea of good casting considering Bravuras a fat white bald guy in the games. (yes i know im picky)
