Discuss: Summer Movie Season 2008 -- The Big Recap

It's difficult (and a little silly) to try and judge an entire quarter-year's movies in one lump sum -- but that's what we seem to do at the end of every Summer Movie Season. That's when all our excitement, expectations, and final reactions come colliding together and we find ourselves thinking: "Was I actually looking forward to that piece of crap for four months?" But to me, each summer is like a walk through a carnival: Some of the attractions dazzle me, others simply don't interest me, and a few are just a waste of tickets. But once early May rolls around, I'm always ready for another trip to the Hollywood Movie Carnival. (It's where you find all the tentpoles!)
So while I'm elated to greet the upcoming season of "prestige movies," there's little denying that we've had one hell of a good summer, cinematical-ly speaking. I'm not talking about box office grosses, because frankly that stuff is so unimportant. What matters is that we got some good flicks, a few pieces of mindless (yet well-made) popcorn adventures, and even a few great films that will enjoy a very long shelf life. So while I'm not exactly sure that 2008 represents the finest Summer Movie Season of all time, I'd definitely say it was more good than bad. But if you can think of a summer that was better than this one, you know where to throw your comments. (In the comments section.)
Here's how I saw the past few months. (P.S. The movies I really liked are all bold! Also, the links will take you directly to the Cinematical review for that film. How convenient!)
The Superheroes
A pretty stellar line-up right here, with Hulk probably the weakest link of the four -- but still quite a bit of fun if you ask me. Iron Man kicked the season off in fantastic fashion, Del Toro's follow-up combined action heroics with fairy-tale awesomeness, and The Dark Knight ... well, what really needs to be said at this point?
The Genre Stuff
Well ... summer's never all that great a season for the scary stuff.
The Alleged Comedies
- Made of Honor
- What Happens in Vegas
- Sex and the City
- You Don't Mess With the Zohan
- Get Smart
- The Love Guru
- Meet Dave
- Mamma Mia!
- Step Brothers
- Swing Vote
- Pineapple Express
- Tropic Thunder
- The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2
- The Rocker
- The House Bunny
- The Longshots
- College
- Disaster Movie
Yee -- ikes. OK, so Get Smart and Step Brothers had a few chuckles (and I heard Swing Vote was pretty decent), but this summer comedy line-up looks absolutely painful. The ladies seemed to have it a little better than the guys -- at least one demographic was pleased with their specialized treats -- but the boys had to wait until summer's end to savor the one-two punch of Pineapple / Thunder. Both were worth the wait, but dang there's a lot of rotten comedies in that list.
The Family Fare
- Speed Racer
- Kung Fu Panda
- WALL-E
- Journey to the Center of the Earth
- Space Chimps
- Fly Me to the Moon
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Most families can deal with the PG-13 fare, but if you've got little ones then your options were fairly limited this summer. The Panda flick was quite a bit better than I'd expected, and the latest Pixar film was an absolute highlight of the whole summer -- but that's about it. Journey had a few cool moments (in between the poundings of my migraine), but Speed Racer makes that flick look like a Merchant Ivory production.
Action and Adventure!
- The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
- Wanted
- Hancock
- The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
- Death Race
- Babylon A.D.
Of course this is where the summer season swings for the fences: the action-adventure stuff, which now has its very own non-superhero sub-division. I skipped the trip to Yawnia this time around, I had a monkey-swingin' good time with Indiana Jones, I got quite the bang for my buck with Wanted, I seem to be one of the only folks who think Hancock is borderline great, and I thought The Mummy 3 was the rottenest big budget flick of the season. Death Race proved to be a late-summer treat (for me, anyway) and while the jury is still out on Babylon A.D. -- I hope it's at least FUN-bad.
So overall, and thinking of films OTHER than WALL-E and The Dark Knight, how would you rate this summer season on a five-star scale? What were your favorites? Biggest disappointments? Most infuriating money-wasters? Um... Movies you thought were overrated!
Give me a week and I'll have the Summer 2009 preview ready.

I thought that this was one of the first summers of non stop exaggeration. The good thing is i am not talking about the Dark Knight. But with Iron Man, yeah, it was a good good movie. But everyone pinned it as one of the greatest superhero movies ever and it doesnt really seem to be even in the top 5. Indiana was incredibly dull and absurd, but yeah, it was "summer time" movie entertaining. Besides Batman and the hulk, i think every franchise dished out a load of crap compared to their previous efforts (Narnia, Indy, Mummy, Star Wars, Ferrell, Myers, Sandler, and the inevitable horror that will be college and disaster movie.)

In the previous message i meant to say worst summer of exaggeration. Not first. It would be crazy to assume we could go threw a summer based on honesty.

In Bruges, still near the top of my 2008 movies list so far. Very underrated.

tropic thunder was my favorite surprise of the season. i was expecting much less than what it delivered, and the opening of the film was arguably the funniest scene(s) of the summer.

Hear, hear to the In Bruges fans. I loved every minute of that movie, and was glad it was mentioned (at least in the comments). Dark Knight goes without saying, Iron Man was a lot of fun and Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder were good for a laugh, but I didn't find them half as funny as In Bruges (Which was admittedly, a different kind of funny). That's my five, no particular order...

I thought there was plenty to enjoy this summer! A agree with the majority of your thoughts on this season's Hollywood fare. There were plenty of films that, for the well made entertainment they are, I'll enjoy watching for many years to come.
Although, for those in the comments who talked about In Bruges, as much as I liked it, it actually came out in February. It was already on DVD by June. =)

Good point! Sorry, I need to read titles properly, I missed the summer reference and assumed this to be 2008 so far.
But, I guess in my defense I am Down Under where In Bruges has only just opened (I got hold of the US DVD), and Summer has not actually started here yet.
It can be very annoying being a movie fan in Australia sometimes but for one day this year we got to see The Dark Knight before nearly anyone else in the world. Still does not make up for the movies that can take months to get here.
But you are right to correct me.
I find fault with nothing else of your great list. Cheers.

Wow, I'm surprised at how negative the comments are.
This is the best summer for movies I can remember. I saw almost all the "blockbuster" movies, and they ranged from good to great to astounding.
Caspian
Iron Man
Kung-Fu Panda
Get Smart
The Happening
Wall-E
Hellboy II
The Dark Knight
Tropic Thunder
X-Files
Indiana Jones
Speed Racer
Yeah the Dark Knight was the phenomenon of the summer -- and it deserved it -- but I *enjoyed* every movie I saw. They were all incredibly *fun*.
Get Smart was a new and enjoyable take on Maxwell Smart, but still respected the original. Speed Racer tanked, and was visually "weird," but had a fun story. Robert Downey Jr. lived up to all his Kiss Kiss Bang Bang potential in Iron Man. The Dark Knight, was incredibly intense, well acted, and bore the thematic nuance of an art movie. Wall-E used a robot to convey the beauty and joy of creation. X-Files blew it by avoiding the aliens, but brought back Duchovny's hilarious dry humor (and Skully was in it too!). Kung Fu Panda told us there is no charge for AWESOMENESS, but showed us it was still worth $10.50...
Great, great summer!

Personally, I enjoyed last summer more than this one. I know the consensus is that none of the three-quels were particularly good, but I actually enjoyed Pirates 3 and Ocean's 13 at least as much as anything I've seen this summer and I didn't hate Shrek 3 or Spider-Man 3. I never got to see The Bourne Supremacy, but I have more interest in seeing it than I do in seeing any of the movies I had some interest in seeing, but didn't ultimately get to this year. There was Ratatouille and Becoming Jane and Fantastic Four 2 (yeah, again, I know it wasn't great, but I did enjoy it). And above all, last summer included a couple of movies that I felt the need to see several times (more than twice) before they left theaters: Order of the Phoenix and Stardust. (I have seen a few things twice, but not three or more times, this summer, and it hasn't been out of sheer love like it was with Stardust.) And, above all else, there were just more movies that I wanted to see last summer.

Stardust - there's a good example of a creative story that got shafted by the industry and audiences. Oh well.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 isn't exactly a comedy, but it was a pretty good little piece of fluff.
My favorites of the summer:
1. Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (yeah, it was on the Internet, but whatever, it was awesome)
2. The Dark Knight
3. WALL·E
4. Pineapple Express
5. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
6. Iron Man
I thought that Tropic Thunder was maybe a little overrated; definitely funny, but it could've been this generation's The Producers, you know? Props for the pic of Jay Baruchel up above, though. That guy's awesome.
The worst movies of the summer were definitely The Happening (though it's the best comedy of the year) and Hancock.

Prince Caspian was worth seeing for two reasons: Peter Dinklage and Anna Popplewell's lips! INDY IV was amazing fun and as for The Dark Knight, Paul Morley put it best when he said "Take away Heath Ledger and you're left with a very ordinary, formulaic film". Please don't take that personally. This isn't IMDB.
