The Light of the Green Lantern -- Conceptually, Anyway
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Warner Brothers, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Images

The Green Lantern movie seems to be creeping very slowly to the pre-production line, but at least it isn't dead. You probably remember that we had a tiny update back in June that it was happily shaping up into a proper origin movie, rather than a slapstick version starring Jack Black. Now, courtesy of illustrator Brian Murray, comes concept art he created for scriptwriter (and potential director) Greg Berlanti. This art helped seal the deal, and win the franchise for Berlanti Television. A glance through the gallery below tells you why -- it's exciting and cinematic, the kind of thing your mind starts filling in and speeding up. If this is what is floating around at Warner Bros, Green Lantern could be shaping up to be something on par with Iron Man. But my desperation to talk about another DC character other than Batman may be showing. The diehard Lantern fans may have a different take than I -- is this the look of Hal Jordan to you?

Man, I can't even get excited about this because it would be such a cool movie if it was done right, but DC/WB really need to prove themselves with something other than Batman. GL might be the most movie-friendly of the WB Superheroes aside for Supe and Bats, so they have to get this right. I'd rather they take their time, than rush it. But at least this concept art can give some hope.

Not to be too much of a nerd, but i am one of the biggest lantern fans in the world. The stuff looks nice. My only question is why you would change the emblem and the costume. The emblem is probably the third most recognized emblem behind supes and bats, the one being used in this art was from a failed side character called ion.
Also the costume, it's been long said by damn near everyone in the industry, for about 50 years, that hal's costume is one of the most perfect designed outfits in comics history. When the new series started, an artist was tasked with redesigning the costume and said that he didnt want to at all, so he just made the most modest of updates and it keeps most of the original design.

It's Hal Jordan alright in the third picture you can see Ferris on the building as in the airline that Jordan flew for.

Yeah, I take big exception to them messing with the costume unduly. The white gloves, for God's sake -- one of the best features of the outfit! The current costume is perfectly fine, and cleaner and more visually distinctive than these conceptual renderings. Fabrics, etc., can be adjusted to give it the 'alien technology' look-and-feel, but let's not mess with a recognized classic that will translate well to the screen, if you finesse the little things...and don't mess with the big things.

I kind of like it, but I really believe that if the Warner people want this thing to work, they are gonna have to go with a different director. I think Berlanti wrote a good script from what I heard over at IESB, but they need a really good director like Peter Jackson or Ridley Scott to get this thing to be awesome. Sorry but I dont believe Berlanti as a director can pull this of, maybe he can hurt the movie in the process, like Brian Singer did with superman. The suit can look so much better, instead it looks doll and i have seen way better graffic art for this caracter in youtube
