Maguire and Raimi Back for Spider-Man 4 and 5!?

Though nothing has been made official yet, Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood says the deal is done to bring both Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi back for Spider-Man 4 and 5. Not only that, but Finke also claims the exclusive on a story we broke right here at Cinematical months ago (thanks for the credit Nikki) -- that Sony plans to shoot both films back to back, not just because it's cheaper, but also because we were informed that James Vanderbilt's (Zodiac) script included a story arc that encompassed two films, not one.
As far as Kirsten Dunst goes, she currently does not have a deal, but Finke claims her character will return and Sony is not interested in recasting her. Villains? While there's been no announcement yet, a source claims that "once you find out who the villain is, you'll know who's playing him." Naturally, that leads everyone to believe that Dylan Baker will reprise his role and ultimately become The Lizard. Should they continue along the same path Spider-Man 3 went down, one imagines another villain (or two) will show up, perhaps as a way to tease us into the fifth film. I'm sure more will arrive online soon, so until then ... are you happy about Maguire and Raimi returning to the franchise?
Spider-Man 4 is currently scheduled to arrive in May, 2011.
UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter confirms the Spidey story today.

How is this cool? Spiderman 3 was a steaming turd, and Tobey Maguire is a total prick.

and being subjective is something that is probably impossible for you...also how was James Vanderbilt's script that you have obviously read because this movie is going to suck..right?

Excited only if Raimi has learned his lesson from 2007 and doesn't have Peter Parker disco dance as the lead singer of Fall Out Boy again.

Well I don't know what to think of this with this years great comic book films Batman & Iron Man. I don't really know if I want Spidy 4 or a relaunch. I would love to see what you could do with spidy some time down the line but right now after S3 I really do not want another spidy film. Every one knows Venom was not the Venom every ones knows and loves but I will be the first to say neither was Sandman. Sandman's character was just as bad as Venoms not as bad but still not as great as the comics.
To me Spiderman 2 was the best film out of them all even though Doc Ock also was not the way he is in the comics what they did with him was really cool.
Now I if you can make Spidy 4 & 5 great not good great I am all for a new movie. I say kill off MJ or at least find some one other then Kirsten Dunst. Heck if you look at what Marvel is doing with Spidy right now go with that He is a single guy again. Even though for years He was married to MJ Marvel just thought you could do more if Peter was single and they took out MJ and Spidy is doing fine.
To me there are some many ways you could go with the next Spiderman film with the bad guys. I do think Sony needs to stop teasing people and bring out the Lizard. Even though He would not be my pick I wanted Venom and we all know how that turned out. But the Lizard could be great fun.
To me I would like to see Chameleon and you could use him to be Harry Osborn or Norman Osborn. I am not sure if Fox owns the rights to Kingpin when they did the Daredevil film or not but if not Kingpin could be great.
To me if you bring in the Lizard a great story could work with Curt Connors and Morbius (Michael Morbius) they both work together to find a cure and give Connors a new arm and well Comic fans know who they become.
May be bring in Mac Gargan aka the Scorpion and have J. Jonah Jameson finally like Spiderman.
But if the next Spidy film will be two movie I think the best way to go is bring in the Sinister Six. There have been different versions of the Sinister Six but Doc Ock & Sandman have already been shown so do you go with that version of the Sinister Six or go with another Sinister Six and take time showing off ever new person or do you show off the new bad guys in flashbacks.
So there is a lot of ways Sony can take the series I just hope Sony does not pull another S3 and like I said recast Dunst if they want MJ still in the movie.

As long as the cheesy musicals, disco dancing and over the top dorkiness is absent, I am up for watching. That lame last scene on part 3, that's hard to get over, seriously, they have a tough past to bury.

Sam Raimi came and Talked to a group of us, about 15, and told us what happened from spider man 2 to the 3rd.
Sony let him run free for the first two films. He got so much freedom that he really got to focus on peters story. The reason why he got the job in the first place was that in a meeting with the head of marvel, he never mentioned spider man, just peter. Raimi wasn't even thought of an an option but they saw that he loved the character and where he wanted peter to go.
So Sony originally only wanted one more film but Raimi wanted too separate it in two more films.
One featuring sandman, with venom being created in the end.
The other featuring just venom.
Sony said no to his idea and he had to cram both into the same film. Sony wrote that into his contract, as well as sony getting control over whats in and out. He said they pushed the 'emo' peter because they thought it represented the target audience.
He said Sony was directing and he could do nothing about it. He could not get out of the film and said he would not direct another spider man unless he got the same amount of control as he did on the first 2.
Thats straight from him. Not a website or he said she said, he sat 5 feet infront of me and told us everything. I completely forgave him at that point for the disaster that was the 3rd.
I look forward to another outing because if he is doing it they must of gave him free reign again.

As for the new villain or villains I would like to see Mysterio on screen. I would also want to see Carnage on screen if and only if the filmmaker don’t mess it up like the did with Venom. I would like to see a villain who goes around killing just for the hell of it. I believe one of the biggest faults Spider-Man 3 had was it had too many villainous story-arcs. So please filmmakers of Spider-Man one use one villain per film. If the filmmakers want to go the multiple villain route then at least bring out the Sinister Six. I am mean new villains are coming out of the wood work aka the Lizard.

Is anyone so blind they can't tell this series needs a reboot?!?
My mind is imploding almost as much one this one as watching any given segment of the RNC last week.
Spidey 3 was terrible. And this comes from someone who would put Spidey 2 within my list of the top 10 sci-fi films.
Maguire is tired. If the last film's shortcomings weren't caused by too many cooks (read too much studio interference), color me surprised.
That being said, I don't want an unrecognizable or overly dark Spidey either, influenced by Dark Knight box office returns.
I think the big lessons in successful comic films this summer is that films work best when they're respectful to the source material and don't try to go campy.
Shouldn't all of this be obvious?? It makes me tired to write it. The only reason I bother is hope that maybe some of the studio suits might actually pay attention to the film sites and listen.
Jesus. I don't see myself paying to see a Spidey 4 with Maguire, and probably not with Raimi either if he couldn't see what a train wreck the 3rd film was.
Honestly, I thought before Spider-Man 1 that Topher Grace would have made a decent Spider-Man and before I had an inkling of how bad Spidey 3 was, I thought casting Grace as Venom was smart -- the whole doppelganger thing. How could someone mess that up? Oh yeah -- minimize Venom's screen time and make the whole storyline extraneous in favor of the oh-so-fascinating Sandman in the green striped shirt. (No offense to Thomas Haden Church, who did the best he could with an abysmal script.) And don't get me started on that Maguire emo dance scene ...

Not thrilled about this news. Raimi got things started with a more serious take on the Spider-Man character but was never able to take it anywhere close to a level of greatness. Then, with the help of Sony, subjected us to that mess of a third installment.
Then there was terrible casting of Macguire who manages to maintain an unbelievably wooden performance. Still better than their casting of Eddie Brock/Venom, which will never make sense (although the character's inclusion doesn't make sense either).

I agree. Each movie was good and they just kept improving. Part 1 good story bad action sequences. part 2 good action sequences not enough of them. part 3 good story and great action sequences, but some cheesy parts. If they keep going the way they're going 4 and 5 wilol be awesome!

Any one ever think that they could be setting up for a Civil War movie? If they're running out the amount of films Sony can make using Spiderman, Marvel could be setting us up for CW.
