TIFF Interview: Bill Maher of 'Religulous'
Filed under: Comedy, Documentary, Lionsgate Films, Podcasts, Celebrities and Controversy, Politics, Interviews, Toronto International Film Festival

Even after debuting Religulous, his new docu-comedy about faith in the modern world directed by Larry Charles (Borat), Bill Maher still has plenty of questions of his own: "I was saying to Larry in the car on the way over here: I suddenly realized that I don't know the relationship between the Devil and the Antichrist. Do you? I mean, we both know those terms, but they're not the same guy, I don't think. I'm not sure if the Devil works for the Antichrist? Or the Antichrist for the Devil? Or is it like the Joker and the Riddler -- neither of them work for each other, but they gang up on Batman ...?" Maher spoke with Cinematical in Toronto about the difference between 'changing your mind' and 'flip-flopping,' what wound up on the cutting-room floor, getting in harm's way for the sake of a great scene, why it's doubtful he'll follow Religulous with another feature film and much more.

Why do we have to have these humorless atheist wretches spouting their inane opinions or observations about our lives and society. Bill if you want to know about the antichrist ask daddy (Satan) or look in the mirror. Anybody that's against Christ is the antichrist. I've never met a professing atheist who's not an anti-theist. It's not enough for them not to believe in God, they must make everyone else not believe. Christians on the other hand want to share their knowledge and truth (gospel) about Christ, but they don't force it down anyone's throat. I know what you must be thinking, but no, Catholics and the Inquisition don't count. They are apostasy and heretical, so we don't acknowledge them. Just cause they did stuff in the name of Christ, doesn't mean He approved. Bill your in the minority and always will be. Give it a rest and shut up. . . please! (I would've included, "For the love of God", but that would have been blasphemous I think.)

Richard says,"It's not enough for them not to believe in God, they must make everyone else not believe."
That statement is just laughable and very ironic...
Richard then says, "Christians on the other hand want to share their knowledge and truth (gospel) about Christ, but they don't force it down anyone's throat."
What are you kidding me? Banning abortion, anti-contraceptives, anti-homosexuals, stem cell research and more... not trying to cram your bs down our throats?
You're just afraid that many many new people are coming to the realization that your religion is nothing more than bullshit spouted by a few old virgin men.
You will never stop until everyone believes what you do.

Bill,
If there is no god you lose nothing. It there is a God you lose everything. 80% of America are Christians. There's a good chance you'd have a much larger audience if your attitide was different. Imagine how much better the world would have been if Hitler, Mujssolini, Saddam Hussein, and many others throughout history like them, if their attitudes were the opposite. I respect your right to express your disbelief, as long as you allow me the same to believe. I will pray that you have a change in attitude, as repentance is a complete change of attitude. I and many others like me will be praying for you everyday Bill. Thank for your time. All the best, John

Well John Haigh: Do you suggest that Bill should believe in the bible/Cristianity just in case this unconfirmed notion is true ... instead of aknoleging the lack of evidence? Would that be living in fear or in Love? All religions worn us of reprocussions for not submitting to ... how they think the rest of society should live. I doubt that 80% of Americans claim to be Christian, but I don't doubt that atleast 80% of Middle Eastener's claim to be Moslems. So, what's your point ... about this percentage? Does Bill have a problem with believing God, or does he just have a problem with some one telling Bill that they're delivering God's message for him to believe? Speaking of "attitude", all religions arragantly proclaim to be right ... and all others to be wrong. Gullabilness to a religion isn't much different than gullabilness to ferrylales! As to your praying: What all religious people have in common is the claim that God speaks to them in the "Still Small Voice" ... wich must be nothing more than a conversation with themselves/own hopes. This would explain why their recieving different messages! Let's face it, they're dilusional if they claim to recieve audible messages! Though the book of Acts speaks of the diciples continuing on with audible messages, healings and miracles; the only testamonies we hear today come only from religous individuels ... rather than unbiased hospital personnel or health organizations. Case in point ... Evander Hollyfield! Sure he said (in the news) that his test results show he was healed: Notice no physician or hospital representative made any statement or confermation though!

PS. John Haigh: 80%? People tend to select the prominant religion to which they are initialy exposed to. That's when the brain washing begins ... or the streghtheing of their belief , if you prefere. As a result, very few people change to other major religions. So when selecting Chritianity, there's a confict of interest right at the start. Your familiar with the (highly clinged to) scripture "Let God be true, and EVERY man a lier". So if the authers to the books of the Bible heard DIRECTLY from God, then they are in a position to believe God. Untill the rest of us hear from God, we are ordered to "let these men be liers"! Otherwize, who would we really be believing ... God, or merley the men who's scriptures Christians have been arguing about ever since they've split apart from the Roman Cathlic doctrine. How do you suppose a correct doctrine could have derived from an incorrect one. I can see how several divisions (including cults) can result. That's due to believing men, and ussuming to be guided by God!

Your spelling suggests you're somewhere around 5 or 6 years old so ... tell ya what, why don't you avoid computers for around 3 years and learn how to spell like most adults. I know it's gonna be rough, books and all, but I'm confident that you can do it. Good luck!

Reply to JCS: I don't have the time to reference my "spelling check tool". Even without it though, I don't think I can top Vice President Dan Qual's blunder when he misspelled the word "tomato" by placing the letter E at the end of it ... during an elementry Spelling B ... which is the time when spelling matters the most! However, you couldn't possibly be bothered by some misspelled words. Instead, your condensending remarks toward me suggest your anger stems from are difference in idiology. Well, there's a word for that. It's spelled "Intollerance"! However, my misspelling isn't the problem. The numerious wars that took place over religious differences are: This includes the murders currently taking place between the Irish and Scottish. This; of cource, is an extreme intollerance.
