Will Smith is 'The Last Pharaoh'

Will Smith really wants a crack at the ancient history epic, and this time it looks like he's going to get it. According to Variety, Smith has hired the go-to guy for historical epics, Randall Wallace, to pen The Last Pharaoh for him to star in.It won't actually be about the last pharaoh of Egypt (Cleopatra still holds that distinction),
but Taharqa, a member of the Nubian dynasty of Egypt, who ruled from 690 to 664 B.C.E. Mentioned by Greek historian Strabo as one of the greatest military tacticians in the world, he's believed to be Tirhakah, king of Ethopia, who's mentioned in the Old Testament as driving Assyrian king Sennacherib away from destroying Jerusalem. Taharqa wasn't just a fighter, though -- he was devoted to peaceful works like restoring temples, and building sanctuaries all over Nubia and Egypt. Nevertheless, his biggest claim to fame is fighting the Assyrians, who invaded Egypt in 677. He didn't exactly defeat them -- they took Memphis and established the 26th dynasty, and Taharqa was driven back to Nubia, where he died in 664.
It definitely has the potential of an action packed story, but I'm curious as to how it's going to be fleshed out. With Wallace (nearly) at the helm, I am willing to bet Taharqa will become a mix of King Leonidas and William Wallace. The saving of Jerusalem is, I think, the high point of the story and has the most historical relevance ... but it's not as romantic as defending one's homeland, and that's reportedly what the film will focus on. And Wallace's scripts tend to be heavy on the romance, iffy on the accuracy. Still, it will be very interesting to see Smith in a sword-and-sandals epic, and I'll watch ancients hack each other onscreen anytime. What about you?

Guaranteed: there will be one scene where you see the Egypt and Assyrian armies charging towards eachother. Over head cam, pan from front to back. Will appear prominantly in trailer, in the last 10 seconds.

Will they do a rocking soundtrack to go with that shot, a'la 300's NIN, or will they use that suite from DragonHeart or Stargate again...
Oh what am I saying? It's Egypt! It'll totally be Stargate. :P

Guess I'll be the voice of descension here today. While I'm still a bit insecure with Will Smith's dramatic abilities, I'm even more concerned with the script. I really don't like Randall Wallace. His claim to fame is Braveheart, and if Mel Gibson hadn't changed the script it would have completely dissolved into a pool of Karo syrup. His subsequent works have proven to be just as gooey. While I'd love something as gritty and realistic as HBO's Rome, I don't think we'll see it in this production.

Ive been waiting a long time for a "serious" ancient egyptian movie to be made. Although i DO like the first 2 Mummies. After 300 I began to think, why havnt there been Egyptian movies of this calibre. I almost got to the point to write my own script on it. But then i heard of this. So im goin to sit back and see where it goes.

Ahmose,
You obviously have no grasp of ancient history. "Ethiopia" was in reference to what in acient times the Bible referred to Much of Northern Africa..which by the way includes people of current day Ethiopia and Sudan.
Perhaps you should look up the definition and etymology of the word 'Ethiopia'.

Please be advised that King Trahaqa was a Nubian King from Sudan and not Ethiopia. The Kingodom of Napata where he is originally from is in present day Northern Sudan. We need to get this right.

lol. This isn't about Assyrians. Assyrians are from the middle east and their invasion of Egypt comes later on.

taharqa wifes would be nubian .nubian kings married their sisters or within the royal family.the nubian royal family comes from southern nubia,or central sudan.this film is much a nubian film as much as egyptian.the nubian/kushite army will be the main focus coming from kush in nubia.the egyptian army just only hepled.this really is a nubian/kushite film that focus on nubia/kush and egypt.
