Duke Nukem Wants to Follow Max Payne
Filed under: Action, Newsstand, Games and Game Movies
I am amazed that Duke Nukem hasn't been made it into a movie yet. Lara Croft got a movie deal faster than he did -- perhaps that's why she let him touch her boobs and live. Consolation prize.Well, perhaps Duke got the last laugh, because producer Scott Faye, the man behind the upcoming Max Payne, isn't going to rest on his video game movie laurels. According to Kotaku, he's working with 3D Realms' Scott Miller to make a Duke Nukem movie. "I'm working diligently at making a Duke Nukem movie scenario that will live up to the character and its import in the videogame world," said Faye. "As is the case with all of my game adaptations, I'd rather not make the movie than make a poor adaptation. With the two new games coming out based on Duke Nukem, I'm working at establishing a Duke film scenario that will compel a studio to finance a feature version. Certainly, there's a large audience that knows and loves this character."
Lest you think that it is all empty producer-speak, it was just such a casual verbal commitment that started the ball rolling on Max Payne, which Faye first saw 10 years ago at E3 in Atlanta. He told Miller he would get a Max Payne movie made -- and he did. That's devotion. I certainly hope, just for Faye's sake, that it doesn't take another decade to get Duke Nukem made. Anyway, Nukem fans, has the boat sailed? Would you still be into a big screen version? And which musclebound man would you place your bets on taking the lead? I've got nothing outside of genetically combining Dolph Lundgren and Kurt Russell. But I nominate the crazy woman from the Duke Nukem Chat Prank as the villain -- Google that, it's too naughty to link here.

I've literally been waiting since the mid 90's when rumors first began to swirl, if Max Payne lives up to the story, and they don't make it into another 'Doom', then I say Hail, to the king Baby!

Can you imagine basing a career on video-game movies: a super-specific sub-genre of film that is noted for being nearly uniformly bad? What the hell?
Did this guy pop in a bunch of Uwe Bohl titles and think to himself "oh, I can top that" or something?
Not to mention, are there any Nukem fans left? Haven't they all had their hearts thoroughly broken by now?

I dunno. Duke Nukem is wallowing in very concious parody/refference to 80's and 90's action lore from the likes of Schwartsenneger and Stallone, that I can't imagine being done in a serious manner in cinema. But I'm guessing it'll be more of a comedy movie or something, wich would fit it.

I got another one:
Ryan Reynolds. He played a similar character in Blade: Trinity. See here:

I'm thinking... something as ridiculous as Last action hero, but R rated, no kids and aliens. Pigs. Alien Pigs. It's easy. No depth here. Just kill aliens, booze and stripers.
I wouldn't know who to cast for the lead. Maybe jump into the DeLorean and get that russian guy from Rocky 4.

Considering how long it's taken Duke Nukem Forever to come out (still waiting...), 10 years would be a short wait for a movie. Heck, it might even coincide with the release of the game at that point!
Duke is fairly 2-dimensional, with plenty of lines and attitude stolen from Army of Darkness. But it could be made into an amusing action-comedy sort of thing.
The Rock was once in line to star in an adaptation years ago if I recall. He'd still fit, even with Doom behind him. In fact, he could be great BECAUSE of Doom.

WHOA WHOA WHOA! How about a NSFW warning on that link? I figured it would be a joke pic of you in your lara croft outfit taking a picture with some guy dressed up as Duke Nukem, or something along those lines. Definitely wasn't expecting that ENORMOUS picture to pop on my monitor :)

LOL, my bad. I did realize, too late, that I should have...and then I thought oh, no one ever clicks on my links!
I'm flattered that I'm synonymous with Lara Croft around here though! That's so cool. :D

I vote Bruce Campbell or Kurt Russell for Duke. I favor Russell because I think he can pull of the short-blond hair look better. Both have established cult following with the Evil Dead/Army of Darkness for Campbell and Snake Plissken with Russell. I don't think you could go wrong with either...
