'Iron Man 2' in IMAX and 3-D!?

With the success of The Dark Knight in both IMAX and conventional theaters, chances are our next big superhero movies will take a page out of Christopher Nolan's playbook and shoot a few scenes in IMAX. Not only does it look hella cool, but it's also a great marketing tool. Beyond that, it won't be long before we're watching our first live-action Marvel flick in 3-D too, and if Jon Favreau has his way, Iron Man 2 might just be that film.
Speaking during a mini press conference for the Iron Man DVD, Favreau addressed a few questions regarding the highly-anticipated sequel. Collider tells us this: "... the highlight was Jon saying he'd love to do Iron Man 2 in 3D! He also called the IMAX Dark Knight footage a game changer and he said he'd love to shoot part of Iron Man 2 in IMAX. Regarding the 3D, he said it's all about the cost, but if they can make it happen he'd like to do it. He talked about getting to see the armor in 3D and how cool it would be."
Personally, I'm not so sure I'd want to see Iron Man 2 in 3-D. That, coupled with the whole IMAX what-to-do, just feels a little too gimmicky for me. I'd rather see them concentrate on creating a sequel that's more entertaining than the first, with a better story, engaging characters and awesome fights. I'll take the IMAX scenes, sure, but hold back on the 3-D for now.
But what do you think?
Iron Man 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on April 30, 2010.

IMAX, 3-D, meh. It's cool, but it's not what I go to the movie theater for. I want to see a good story in an immersing environment, and I can do that plenty fine without uber-huge screens and 3D glasses.

Honestly, after watching Beowulf on the Imax in 3D. I was completely sold on the idea of using 3D in a movie without making it a gimmick. While the movie itself was meh, the experience ranks up there in some of my favorite movie going experiences of all time. Dark Knight in IMAX is not far from that on the list. So to me, I think Favreau is up to the challenge making an IMAX movie in 3D and not lose any quality at all.
I say bring it on and watch the Dark Knight's record crumble...

yeah, but having seen Beowulf in 2-D, I can tell you that there were still a couple of obvious "hey, look, I'm in 3-D!" shots. It was still annoying. But I'll give you that Beowulf avoided that kind of sophomoric indulgence on the whole.

I don't care as long as they purposefully make shots to exaggerate the 3D. Nothing pulls me out of film quite like seeing a contrived shot just so the director can show off how "cool" 3D is.

I'm all for Iron Man 2 in IMAX, but I agree with holding off on the 3D...having to wear glasses and all that is somewhat distracting.

I agree with the idea of shooting the film as you would if it wasn't 3d, so that it isn't a gimmick. then when you go to the 3d (if you choose to) you get the added experience of depth. I really liked the Superman returns 3d scenes, not because a bunch of things popped out of the screen, but because it had more depth.
As far as IMAX, a proper IMAX screen is too tall. Its nice and big and clear, but its a terrible aspect ratio for films. So what you end up with is a reversal of sorts from the 4:3 tv days; now, someone who watches a pan n scan version on a 4:3 tv is missing parts of the picture. If you show a full IMAX movie on a 16:9 set, you are either going to cut off some of the top and bottom, or have bars on the sides of the picture. Seems like a step backwards to me.

I think this would be awesome. A step foward if you ask me. Also, an I-MAX screen is not too big if you sit in the very very back :-). You can see the whole thing perfectly.
