DJ Caruso Wants to Shoot 'Y: The Last Man' Next Year

I have to tread ever-so-carefully on anything about Y: The Last Man because I'm so behind (I know, I know, but it was a really long series and trades are expensive). But to all of you who finished Brian K. Vaughan's series, UGO's interview with D.J. Caruso may wind you up. According to Caruso, the script for the first film has been turned in to Warner Bros (which Vaughan collaborated with them on), and they're waiting for the green light. They're hoping to start shooting as early as winter of 2009, and the studio is aiming for a release date of late 2010. And, yes, they're targeting more than one film -- Caruso hopes it will be one of three, with the first movie ending when Yorick and his monkey, Ampersand, meet Dr Mann and are separated. (Yes! Dr. Mann will be in it! As will 711, though neither have any actors associated with them yet)
As for casting, they still want Shia LaBeouf to play the title role of Yorick (the only surviving male mammal on the planet earth). "I just think Shia would bring such a fun sort of humor to it. And at the same time, keep Yorick sort of grounded and real with the action sequences and all the other stuff," says Caruso.
And what of 355? Is Alicia Keyes playing her? Not yet. Caruso adds, "She's definitely someone to consider. I thought she did a really cool job in [Smoking Aces] ... I'd love to have sort of a (Robert) DeNiro/(Charles) Grodin relationship between 355 and (Yorick). Kind of a Midnight Run relationship ...I think Alicia's a great girl and everything but I have to make sure that she can handle the acting part of it."
So, readers, think they're on the right track? The script sounds promising, but I'm still not sold on LaBeouf. Who would be your ideal cast for this?

I just read through this entire series in the past week, and was happy to hear that this is being made. Caruso and LaBeouf's previous collaboration wasn't a masterpiece, but it was entertaining and well made. That being said, the series doesn't necessarily need a masterpiece treatment. I think this team could get this project done and deal with the scale of it all really well. As for the casting decision, LaBeouf is actually a really good fit for Yorick, and their schtick seems pretty similar. I don't want to see another cgi shia monkey thing though.

Caruso seems to have a hell of thing for LaBeouf, but I'm not sure I can think of anyone who could play all of Yorick's angles. You need someone who can do broad physical comedy and quiet tender moments without it seeming like two completely different people. Shia can pull off a grounded job, but can he really sell the emotion? Not sure...but I think he's got potential to be fantastic in it.
I just think by the time Y comes out, if he doesn't take a break people are going to get very tired of seeing him in a movie every 3 months.

Topher Grace would be my choice. He would have been a great Peter Parker as well.

If he were a little younger, I'd say Ryan Reynolds. Mainly because he has shown he can be pretty damn funny and good at action as well.

Alecia Keys is not 355,
She doesn't have the personality for it.
355 should be played by Tracie Thoms
She was Kim in Death Proof.

its pointless to make this movie.
why can't anything just live in its original form? the comic is so good. A movie shouldn't be the pinnacle of all media for all stories. Some are better as books or comics or tv shows or whatever the hell else.

Doesn't anyone see? The key casting is Ampersand.

How about any one of the far more famous, less diminutive young black actresses out there? Regina King (perfect!), Gina Rivera (also perfect!), Gabriel Union (fierce), Kerry Washington, Sanaa Lathan...I mean, come on! Alica Keys? Tracie Toms? Let's be realistic here
