Don Cheadle to Replace Terrence Howard in 'Iron Man 2'

Despite the heavy hints in Iron Man that Jim Rhodes, best friend to Tony Stark, would come to play War Machine in a future film, it won't be Terrence Howard reprising his role as Rhodes in the forthcoming sequel, but rather Don Cheadle. According to the Hollywood Reporter, there hasn't been a formal announcement by Marvel Studios about it, but the casting swap appears to have come as a result of money matters (natch).
Returning still are stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, in addition to director Jon Favreau, as Justin Theroux, fresh off the success of Tropic Thunder, currently tinkers away at the script. Last month, amidst the press blitz for the Iron Man DVD, Favreau confessed to wanting to incorporate both 3-D and IMAX technology in the making of the sequel (to which the world collectively replied "[BLEEP] yeah!").
Alas, it remains for the Paramount/Marvel number-crunchers to determine in which format exactly we'll see Downey Jr. and Cheadle team up come the summer of 2010.

Terrence Howard was dull and lifeless throughout "Iron Man," adding nothing to the proceedings, and he's just grown less interesting as an actor in general post-"Hustle & Flow."
Cheadle may not be preferable among fans simply because it would break the consistency of the series thus far -- they never like re-casting -- but he's a far better actor, and would no doubt be more interesting to watch as Jim Rhodes.

I like Don Cheadle, but I don't want to see any role recast, so I'd really like Howard back.

I love Cheadle, and I really disagree with Howard being dull. He was pimp, man. He had fun and made it fun. That said, I could not believe the Cheadle I saw in TALK TO ME was the same one as in HOTEL RWANDA. So I'll give him a chance, since my choice (Wesley Snipes) is not that big of an actor and is currently... um... unavailable.

Howard had more of the Rhodey build and his chemistry with RDJ was great. I really like Cheadle though....still, this is kinda lame considering Howard's line was "Next time, baby!" D'oh!

Seriously, though, I think Cheadle would a smashing job. Better than Howard I think. Hopefully he grows a goatee.

Was so waiting for Terrence to kick some ass in #2! Cheadle is much less exciting. What a pointless move. Terrence had real edge.

I like both Terrence and Don. I'm just glad they're not recasting it with Ben Affleck or Jake Gyllenhaall!!

Marvel PURPOSEFULLY is not bringing Terrence back and it wasn't because of money. Howard had a contract, why would he need to negotiate. The director and Downey both prefer to work with Terrence. Frankly it doesn't pass the laugh test. Terrence or his team would never allow "alleged" negotiations (albeit of an existing agreement) stop them from being the first black superhero. And if Marvel truly said it was financing, why are they hiding under anonymity? One statement "leaked" to The Hollywood Reporter and every news agency is taking it as gospel. How GOSSIP travels.

I was sick when I read this at FSR. I thought WTF??? I grew up with Terrance in Cleveland, and we are very proud of him. I'm deeply troubled by this turn of events. I have nothing but high praise for Don Cheadle, but this is not the role for him. Terrance owned the role. The chemistry between him and RDJ was very visible. And for Marvel to not comment is even more troubling. I can't even see Will in this role either. This role does not call for clowning around which is what Will does best other than autobiographies. I say meet him halfway and settle the rest later. This movie calls for everyone to receive a pay upgrade even for Gwenneth Paltrow. Stiudos know you have to spend money to make money. And the cast made them a WHOLE LOT OF MONEY!

Terrence Howard is a great actor and it"s about time that Hollywood give him the respect. He always play his his part to the max. I have been watching his movies for years. Keep up the good work. Just take this as a stepping stone and move on to bigger an better things. God Bless you.

I think it is a shame that marvel gives ppl the run around like that, I'm not saying Terrance fit the character I personally think Micheal Jai White(spawn) would have been the perfect fit, but you can't just take someone's role; especially after they gave a great performance you gotta keep in the starters otherwise your setting yourself up for failure.

its just frustrating that everytime there's another sequel, movie producers (or whoever) changes the cast, it just doesnt feels the same when watching the sequel.
and com'on. . . he doesnt even look like war machine dude type, green lantern would be good (i think..or not)... but not warmachine. terrence is a good actor, and why would they hire him in the first ironman if his not.. i did get excited when he said "next time baby" on the first ironman..its disappointing now.
