'Heathers 2' Alert: Jason Dean Wants More Suicide Notes & Maybe Pirate Radio
Filed under: RumorMonger, Remakes and Sequels

Greetings and salutations! I bring the following news to you with an air of excitement, and a huge warning of caution:
Christian Slater, otherwise known as the sexy, seductive, and utterly unstable Jason Dean, is eager to go back to the Heathers fold. While talking up his new NBC show My Own Worst Enemy with AOL TV, Slater spoke about returning to Sherwood, Ohio and said:
"Yeah, sometimes I see Winona and she's like, 'Are you ready to do Heathers 2?' And I'm like, 'Sure!' I would do it in a heartbeat. I would totally love to do that character again -- J.D. We'd have to have a scene in there where's he's watching The Shining or something, you know? We'd have to see that he's collected all of Nicholson's movies. Just to really make sense of it all. [Laughs] That would be like a dream come true for me. So we'll see -- if they want to put something together, I'd be thrilled."
Why the caution? Well, Winona has been dying to do it for years (I remember reading rumors about it all the way back in the 90s), and there was all that talk about the sequel being a reality two years ago. We saw how far that got. But maybe some things have changed -- the way Slater is talking about this, you'd think he's itching for more than just an "Obi-Wan-type appearance."
To be clear, I'm all for it however they whip it up. (IF they whip it up -- I just don't want unfounded anticipation.) I've brought the film up a myriad (reference intended) of times at Cinematical and driven Erik crazy with my ability to always go back to Daniel Waters' classic. (Whether it's retro cinema, RIP, or DVD releases.)
However, the big question comes with the HOW. 19-year-old spoiler warning: JD died, in perfect Christ-like form at the end of the film. (That is, unless we want to believe that he dropped the bomb and ran, since we didn't actually SEE the explosion, only Veronica's dusty aftermath.)
I'm inclined to think that the only way we can get a sequel is if we get a taste of what Waters wanted to bring to the screen and couldn't -- different social types in heaven. It's the only way to get a lot of Mr. Dean in the film, because while Winona rocks as Veronica Sawyer, she's nothing without her troubled love. Maybe JD's dream of a happy and inclusive heaven was nothing more than the dream, and the reality of popularity and ridicule proceeds well beyond death? Could JD be aging in a purgatory like Wristcutters and Veronica has to save him? The possibilities are endless. Now we just have to wait and see if they become a reality.
Oh yes, and if you're a fan of 90s Slater, he also likes the idea of revisiting Happy Harry Hard-On. Maybe that could become a reality if the Eat Me, Beat Me Lady Samantha Mathis wants to as well.

YES! YES! YES!
The sequel probably won't make any sense, but I don't care. "Heathers" is one of the funniest movies ever and I would love to see Winona Ryder and Christian Slater together again.

I'd like to see it happen, but I won't get my hopes up for a sequel that's actually good.

Haha... I'm with you mezzanine. It most likely won't be good, but I don't really care. I will be happy just to see it.

Personally, I think that Heathers is more or less perfect without a sequel. I mean, don't get me wrong, I would love to see more of those characters, but bringing them back without some seriously contrived storyline would be difficult. The story ended in a suitable fashion already, so why mess with a good thing.
Now, a sequel to Pump Up The Volume would be very, VERY welcome. After doing a short stint for his crimes in the first film, he moves to some random suburb and gets an "Office Space" type job. Years of sitting back, becoming increasingly disenfranchised will lead to a return of H.H.H.. Not only could a 20 years later scenario work well with the characters, but "Harry" could now go global with podcasting and his own blog. (sub-plot: Needs to find his old flame Nora, who helps him with the new technology) Of course, he would have to start some sort of world-wide anti-government movement and be wanted as a terrorist in every industrialized nation there is, but that would be just awesome.
