Discuss: How to Bring Spider-Man Back?
Filed under: Action, RumorMonger, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels

With all the talk revolving around the hottest new superhero franchises, it seems Spider-Man is starting to feel like an aging star. I half expect Peter Parker to come out with a line like, "When I was young, my film only had one villain and it took a whole two hours to defeat him." Yeah, well now your superhero movie ain't cool unless it boasts at least three villains, and the darker the music, the characters and the storyline, the better. So where does Spider-Man fit in to all of this?
MTV caught up with Sam Raimi recently, who seems to know very little about a Spider-Man 4 or 5, except that he's chatted with people about the film(s) and hopes to direct (Raimi also confirmed that he's talked about shooting both films back-to-back, which was a rumor that started right here on Cinematical). He does admit to not having a script yet, and says that production wouldn't begin until March, 2010. As far as villains go, Raimi thinks "one day The Lizard's story will be told," which makes sense -- and added that he's "hoping to work with Dylan [Baker] in the picture."
But is this the solution? Continue with the same storyline, bringing 2010 versions of both Tobey Maguire (who'll be in his mid-thirties) and Kirsten Dunst back to the big screen in an attempt to revive this almost forgotten-about franchise? In this new age of darker, more realistic superheroes, what needs to happen for Spider-Man to succeed? And who needs to star? After all, May 2011 is a far, far away.

Spiderman 4 should take the less is more approach. We don't need 3 villians. Peter and Mary should have a somewhat stable relationship for one movie.
Focus on what it is like being with someone that may not make it back every night. The lizard is a great villain for Sam Rami to use. Make him less cgi and more old school Alien. Actually be scary not just a moving toy.

Don't. Let it go away. The last one was so bad there's no way to ever redeem it.

the reason 3 was so shit was because the studio's took creative control from Raimi and made decisions on their own. he has stood up and said that his vision slipped and that 3 was a crap film. not his fault, i say let him back

just bring the Lizard and Carnage! Carnage is dark (though he is red) and evil enough. How to bring Carnage I don't know, but I really want to see Carnage!

Let's not have Raimi directed it, for one. It should probably take the reverse direction that the original Batman movies did which ended with the cartoony Schumacher versions and started with the gothic Burton versions. I say let a new director come in that won't have Peter Parker doing a disco dance while dressed up as the lead singer from Fallout Boy.
Personally, I'd be much more willing to accept and see a Spider-man movie that is treated much like the comics where you get a whole side story in the form of a graphic novel that is under the care and supervision of a completely different creative team than the normal running series. What would two films back to back about Lizard's story be like if someone like Curtis Hanson (not that he'd do it,) or J.J. Abrams (not that he's not busy enough,) at the helm? Hell, even give Frank Miller a shot at it. I'd like to see Zack Snyder take over. I'd be more willing to go see any number of those vastly different versions of Spider-man before I go see another Raimi version.

I do not see a problem with Sam Raimi directing... if most people remember, spiderman 1 and 2 were the reboot for the superhero franchise... I would like for him to start new... it should be peter parker entering the next stage of his life... leave the rehashed mary jane storyline out... but keep her in his life... there needs to eb connections from the previous movies... Dylan Baker is the best choice as a villian, but they cant be afraid to throw another in the next movie... perhaps a Kraven the Hunter... and from there maybe try to work in a siister six scenairo for the 5th and final film and have it end there for good with a definate ending... but for anyone to say Raimi shouldn't direct, take a look at Spiderman 2 again... if he can regain the magic from that film, I am confident the next will be just as good...

I still think the best way to go is an all out action no holds barred movie, the best scenario is "The Hunt" with two villians that are relavent to each other instead of a mismosh of a mess see spidey 3, The Lizard is terrorizing the city so J.Jonah pulls in a big game hunter, enter kraven played by gerald butler, so the race is on between spidey and the hunter one wants to kill the creature, the other wants to save the man.

I agree with Teddy, Raimi did a great job with 1 and 2, 2 was and still is one of the best superhero movies ever made. Raimi has said he purposefully ruined the venom storyline because he likes the old villains and didn't want to do Venom at all.
I think 4 should have a reverse Death of Gwen type story with MJ dying maybe near the beginning and Gwen coming in to help console him. I like the Lizard as the Venom and they should definitely stick to one villain as in the first 2 films.
But definitely find some way to make Gwen the love interest and drop MJ like a bad habit.

As a longtime fan of Spiderman, a fan of the first two movies, and a fan of Sam Raimi's work, I think it's time for some new blood. Spiderman 3 was just bad, tons of wasted potential. Part of the strength of Spidey 1 and 2 is that the villains were very well developed, and in some ways, likeable characters. You got none of that in 3 - it just came off as this was going to be his last Spiderman movie, so Raimi crammed in as much as he could. So as far as directors, we need someone new, and if he wasn't doing The Hobbit, I'd love to see Del Toro do it - he would have made a great Spidey vs Venom movie... Or even better, Mysterio - he could go crazy designing all kinds of bizarre things for Mysterio to use.
As for actors, again, time for some new blood. Kirsten Dunst was good in the first one, but after that, she just got annoying, and Tobey Maguire is getting to old to play the part. It's too bad they used Topher Grace for Venom - he would have made a great Peter Parker. As a matter of fact, Bryce Dallas Howard would have made a great Mary Jane, plus she's actually a redhead.

Why go dark... its not the marvel way... marvel has always been real world and not super dark ala DC comics... since Dark Knight was amazing, everyone feels that comics should be dark, but why try to copy that trend and instead stick with the way spiderman has been made... although Carnage is cool, its a character that won't fit with the raimi world, unless you want another venom style movie... instead focus on the older well developed characters... lizard is the best option, but they need to look to add another like Kraven, Mysterio, Electro, or even Vulture... they might seem lame, but can be turned into main villians if given the chance... before raimi is criticized for somthing he hasnt done yet, remember this is a guy who created the sweet Evil Dead franchise and still did well with spiderman 1 and 2... so dont shoot the man down yet, i have faith that when it comes out, Spiderman will be spectacular... after the success of Iron Man, Marvel will not let anything try to drag down the superhero francise, so remember they will ahve the final say on a lot of the idea that come along.

Are you saying Marvel is bright and cheerful and DC is dark and brooding?
You should read more comics.

NO CARNAGE. I'd like to see Kraven, and while Spiderman fights him, Dr. Connors has his Lizard story set up for the next film. And I dunno, maybe Kraven and Spiderman can team up and follow Dr. Connors to Africa or something.

What about Morbius..... They could bring Blade in (I seem to recall that Snipes has said in the past that he would do 3 Blade movies but would be interested in a cameo in another movie, and he could use the money to pay his taxes.....)

I'd rather they make an Ultimate Spider-Man movie, it would probably tie in better with all the new movies Marvel are making, as they tend to be leaning more towards the Ultimate/s Universe (Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, etc).

Spiderman 3 was garbage. Never was I so disappointed. You have to be fair though, 1 and 2 was great, so I hope Sam Raimi returns and whatever he decides to do, I hope its just his vision and the studio doesnt get involved. Personally id like to see The Scorpion or Kraven the Hunter. Spidey has always had a great rogues gallery. Peter and Mary Jane should be settled down, if theres any drama from them it should be from the Black Cat. Besides that one good villian will do, just like the first 2. Spidey isnt a dark character, not everyone can be Batman.

New directors, new writers and new principal actors. Period.
I'm not asking for a reboot, but Maguire's Peter Parker makes me want to punch him in the face. I grew up watching the 90s Spider-Man that was on Fox and THAT Peter Parker would want to beat up Tobey, too.

iirc, not every comic has Mary Jane in it. I think their relationship is established enough that we can take Spiderman to a different location. He could make phone calls. :)
Can we please have Black Cat in the next film? Preferrably in the same costume? :D~~
