More Bad News for 'Dragonball': Fox Schedules Reshoots
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, 20th Century Fox, DIY/Filmmaking, Comic/Superhero/Geek
At this point, I'm starting to wonder why Fox even bothered trying to bring Dragonball to the big screen. Just a few weeks after the underwhelming trailer for the anime update hit the internet, a notice has been found over at Actors Access looking for Tibetan and Nepalese actors for Dragonball re-shoots. The shoots are scheduled to begin on October 30th, but there aren't many specifics on what Fox might have planned. One thing is for sure, director James Wong could stand to make a few changes before the flick hits theaters in April (if you don't believe me, take a look at James Marsters as Lord Piccolo).Let's just take a moment to consider the history of the project -- because, for me, it all started with the casting of Justin Chatwin (War of The Worlds). As soon as Mr. Chatwin signed on the dotted line as the hero Goku, fans haven't been behind the project like Fox had hoped. Even if you ignore the obvious problem of hiring a non-Asian actor for the role, Chatwin didn't have much to recommend him other than the hair type to pull off anime spikes.
Cut to a few months later, and a nasty rumor emerged claiming Fox might possibly scrap the film altogether. The studio has since debunked that rumor, and according to their spokesperson, they are completely behind the film and loved what they saw. Then again, if they loved it so much, why are they back for re-shoots?
Dragonball is expected to arrive in theaters on April 3rd, 2009.

well, it depends -- most of the time, late re-shoots are usually not a good sign for a production.

not neccesseraly. i think that since Dragonball has such a, forgive my wording, nerd fanbase, everything is going to be taken as the worst possible news. if fox is looking for tibetan/nepalese actors, i'm guessing its for the monk(like) people we see at the tournaments in the anime or something similar. If Fox really does support the film so far, then this move could simply be to make it the best as they can! and there's nothing wrong with that in my opinion.

It was announced by FOX that it wasn’t the official trailer for the film but to introduce some characters to those people at the Brand Licensing Europe. The L&M piece didn’t showcase the hard-core action that the film will offer, but the official trailer will which is due out in December.

This news doesn't surprise me. If you asked me which studio was behind a screw up, my first guess is always going to be fox.
But I've never cared about dbz so I'm not too worried about it. Still, for the fans of dbz, my condolences.

Well look at the hypocricy on movie sites!!!
If I am not mistaken both Wanted and Iron man had reshoots just 3-4 months before their release dates.
Reshoots happen with every way. It is either done to add a scene which wasn't shot eariler or to make a scene or two slightly different.
You guys need to chill. Now I myself think the movie will be crap but frankly speaking reshoots happen with most big movies nowadays.

Jessica Barnes, how ignorant ARE you about the film industry? Reshoots are done ALL THE TIME, in movies and television. It seems you knew ALL about the so-called "Dragonball trailer", but funny you DIDN'T know that Fox described it as a teaser designed to introduce tradeshow merchandisers to the DB characters. That was its ONLY intent; it was not meant for public consumption. The OFFICIAL trailer probably will appear in theaters during the December premiere of "The Day The Earth Stood Still".
Howcum you didn't know any of this, Ms. Barnes? Too busy polishing your 'rapier wit' describing a lowly tradeshow teaser? I can't decide if you're an ignorant fanboy posing as a film writer--or just an ignorant writer posing as a film writer.

Do you guys always judge your films based on a trailer that's composed of very short clips jumbled together?
On the unofficial site that the leaked trailer was not intended for the public. To quote: "They were only meant to be shown to potential Licensing & Merchandising partners who need to make partnering decisions far in advance of release date."
I'll hold off judgement until I see how they treated the "in the air destroy the world" action sequences . Sheesh, and I'm not even a fan of the anime!

Clearly this Jessica Barnes person must not put a lot of research into what she writes. Ya reshoots are fairly common. The Lord of the Ring Trilogy had tons of reshoots, look how that turned out!
A lot of people seem to think that Justin Chatwin is a bad choice for Goku... Who would you have picked? Now Im not a film maker but I would imagine it would be hard as hell to match up an actor to a anime character... And since this is DRAGONBALL NOT DRAGONBALL Z, Goku isnt the ripped muscle monster he is later in the series.
Piccolo doesnt look bad, sure he looks different, but not bad. Again we are going from ANIME to LIVE ACTION, and since the dragonball universe is just crazy, some changes have to be made.
And that trailer that she was so obviously unimpressed with was NOT a trailer. It was a licensing pitch that was shown at a convention for financial backers/licensers. It was leaked to the public. The actual trailer is being released with The day the Earth Stood Still, or whatever its called, in december!

OMG!!! JESSICA ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Did you just trash Fox's decision for not hiring an Asian actor to play Goku?
I guess my previous comment about not doing research is more then accurate!
Ill say it nice and slow for you. Goku.... is.... an.... ALIEN.... he.... is.... not.... ASIAN! Think about that for awhile and get back to me.

Reshoots and recuts are common on all films, especially after the first couple of screenings when the filmmakers figure out what works and what doesn't. The problem is that it's Fox, and if you look at their track record for getting too involved in a production and ruining the material, that's what should draw up a red flag. I never trust a Fox production until I see it.

Please don't speak for all fans. While I agree that the almost everything we've seen so far looks terrible I was completely behind Chatwin as Goku. He looks just like him. No matter what some american anime fanatics may tell themselves, Goku looks white and a white guy should play him. Or better yet someone who looks slightly japanese but mostly white. A japanese Goku would make this film even worst IMO because that's not the Character I know and recognize.

Whether the trailer was meant for merchandising purposes or not, that doesn’t take away from the fact that the film looks lame. I have followed the live action news since it was first announced back in 2002. Its color tone makes the film seem a little less appealing, or at least it does to me. Honestly, the costumes are absolutely ridiculous. Goku definitely needs to change up his outfit. It’s nice that they want to keep it as close to the original as possible, but the outfit needs to go. Piccolo looks like Dracula in spandex. Bulma reminds me of a bachelor party stripper. Chi Chi needs to work on her kicks, because that one in the teaser looked so unrealistic. Its obvious wires were at work, but they could at least make it look more fluid. Oh, and what the hell was up with that gay looking drill?

Ok first of all, about the fact that an asian isn't playing the role of Goku, who cares? Even Akira Toriyama himself said that he purposely created the characters of Dragonball not to have a distinct connection or resemblance to any specific race. And honestly after looking at the some of the screen shots from the movie, I'd say he's perfect for the part, he resembles Goku quite a bit. Secondly, every movie has re-shoots, nobody is perfect, if they have to go back and fix certain things, that can only help the movie in my opinion. You can't expect everything to be perfect the first time through, it just isn't possbile. As for the trailer that was "released" (and I use that term very loosely) That trailer was never supposed to be seen by the public, the special effects are incomplete as well as the rest of the movie, therefore the "trailer" isn't an accurate depiction of what the movie will look like. (hence the re-shoots) I say give this movie a chance, stop acting like its your money that's being spent on it and making such a big deal about the fact that its being made. You really don't have anything to be upset about. Also I've been doing some research on this film, and supposedly the fighting is supposed to be absolutely phenomenal, and Justin Chatwin nails the kamehameha, so I've heard. Also the fight between Piccolo and Goku is apparently going to last from 20-25 mins, maybe even more.
