Christopher Nolan Finally Talks 'Batman 3'

In a new three-part interview over at the LA Times, writer-director Christopher Nolan has returned from his Batman vacation and finally opens up a bit about The Dark Knight's ridiculous box office take, Heath Ledger's performance and whether or not he'd be interested in directing a third Batman film. Sure, on paper he'd appear stupid not to take a gig helming the next Bat-flick, but Nolan has always been a man who takes one thing at a time -- and notes in this interview how much he dislikes the whole act of "setting up the sequel," even though he kinda does it himself at the end of Batman Begins when Gordon shows Batman the Joker card. Regarding that scene, however, Nolan adds: "But for me that was just about the excitement of people leaving the theater with the sense that now we have the character up and running. I wanted people to walk away with that sense in their head. You know, that he's become the Batman in the movie."
Later on in the interview -- which covers Knight's box office, Ledger's performance and the inevitable sequel -- Nolan, who says he'd next want to take on a "very intimate, small story that happens to be photographed on a ridiculously large scale," questions whether he'd even want to make a third Batman film. He says, "There are two things to be said. One is the emphasis on story. What's the story? Is there a story that's going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That's the overriding question. On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name? [Laughs.] At the same time, in taking on the second one, we had the challenge of trying to make a great second movie, and there haven't been too many of those either. It's all about the story really. If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer."
What do you think? If Nolan doesn't direct it, do you egg his house next Halloween?

Nolan makes provocative and powerful films. I will see whatever he decides to make. However, I think there is a great opportunity to continue with the the Gotham that he has created. But if he doesn't feel there is more story then there really isn't a point for him to continue. The first two films were passionate and interesting--the bar is very high. I trust his judgment.

Did The Police try to record another album after Synchronicity? NO! They quit while they were ahead and went out on top. Nolan should do the same as far as the Batman franchise is concerned. No matter what, his next film is screwed as far as expectations go, no matter how good it is. It might as well not be a Batman movie because that would at least keep expectations from going completely through the roof. Plus, it will increase the likelihood of it not costing $200 million. I can't imagine that, should he do Batman 3, it would be horrible but the chances of it clicking as perfectly as Dark Knight are slim to none, the only downside to going with the Joker for the second film.

I wouldn't hold it against Nolan if he opted not to continue. But I would have my reservations about the next film. Not that it'd be a foregone conclusion if he's attached, but it'd be closer to it.

It's ridiculous that everyone has been crying out for a sequel since before The Dark Knight even opened. Why? Does everyone have Warner Bros. stock? The movie was excellent, but it was lightning in a bottle. This mentality is fueling the same unoriginality in Hollywood that everyone likes to bash.

David Goyer said that they had already developed a story arc for three films.
So I wouldn't jump on that "quit while you're ahead" bandwagon, just yet.
I don't think they have a specific set of events for the third film, but there's probably a good idea of where they want to leave the Batman character and Gotham City at the end of a third movie.
Just like the second movie dealt with the theme of escalation, that idea had been rooted since the end of the first film. We didn't know how exactly it was going to deal with that theme until the movie came out.
The end of the second movie leaves a much bigger door open than the end of the first movie.

I believe that they (Nolan and Goyer) have indicated that they condensed Harvey Dent's story arc into a single movie. I assume that he would have been a large part of their original third film. I don't think the Dark Knight allows them to continue that original plan.

I think if they have a good story, they should go for it. Why not? The point of moviemaking, on some level, is to tell good stories. Who are we to say that just because this story is go great the same characters shouldn't be used to tell another one?

I disagree with the idea that expectations of a third Nolan Batman film would be too high, thus setting him up for failure. I feel that if anything, expectations will be low, ie "How could he EVER top Dark Knight?"
I think this:
"very intimate, small story that happens to be photographed on a ridiculously large scale"
could easily be a Batman film. I think, as Nolan says, and other commenters have echoed, the idea is to tell a good story, and not focus on outdoing the previous film. I feel like it could be an intimate character study, the third film...

of course he should come back. he owes it to us not to leave Batman as the perceived scourge of the city. you don't end a batman series on him running from the law with everyone thinking he's the bad guy! Why the hell would they even make an ending like that if they had no idea where to go from there. "Well guys... we did a heck of a job making everyone in Gotham hate Batman. Lets call it a day." Of course there is "more to the story". That's like leaving Luke hanging upside-down under cloud city with one hand and then quitting.

Nolan should definitely come back to Batman, but he should allow enough time to make it good instead of just banging out the next film. That is assuming the studio/producers don't try to screw with him. If that happens just walk away Nolan, you'll still have my respect.

I see it hard for a 3-peat. If continue with the current story arc, whoever you get to replace Heath Ledger is going to get bamblasted by the media and the fans. Sort of what they did to Daniel Craig as Bond. I love DC as Bond and I have him at number 2 in the list of Bonds. As for Joker replacement you have to do the same as they did in the Bond Series and revamp the storyline for the new Joker to fit. Does Nolan have that in him? I don't know and it would be a very big gamble. If he sidesteps the Joker storyline, would fans like what he comes up with next. Can it top DK? I don't think so. Nolan's in a pickle.

I think he should call it a day at two great movies rather than taint the memory of his Batman films with an average/poor third installment.
He's told the origin story. He's had Batman face his arch-enemy. There really isn't anyway left to go that's going to be a strong enough story to hold up to the previous two, and none of the remaining Batman enemies are realistic enough to fit into Nolan's Gotham, so don't try.
Unfortunately, we all know whether Nolan does it or not, the third installment will be here by 2010 because Hollywood loves to beat a "franchise" into the ground for every last penny/cent.

I'm feeling the same sort of doubts about this threequel that I am feeling about the new bourne movie - the ending wrapped up the story so nicely that it would feel somewhat cheapened by another addition. I am sure that it would be fantastic if Nolan did it - I've loved every single one of his films so far - but do we really need another batman movie right after the dark knight?

What Happened?
Did his ball dropped off, Hmmm?
Just Kidding!
Of course, maybe he has been pressured by the success of TDK
I Believe that sooner or later he'll sign-up for the third movie...
Despite the Fact that Heath died, I Believe that they will come up with a good storyline and plot. Of Course, with the proper execution and treatment. I believe That They'll (with his Brother, Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer) able to do it!
(For those people who believe that all third movies from a franchise sucks: The Godfather III, Spiderman 3 )
Look at the Bright side!
- Lord the Rings: Return of the King
- Bourne Ultimatum
Those are the only ones I've Seen
I believe in Christopher Nolan's Talent!
Maybe He will be the 1st Director who will make the Best Movie Trilogy the world has ever seen....

I'm cool with him taking his time. WB/DC have to realize that they need Nolan. I wouldn't mind seeing one more.

I think that the perfect move for a third Dark Knight movie... and Bale fans will hate this idea... is to have Nolan film Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. You get to have Batman now at the end of his career, a new female Robin, and the whole slew of mutants and Joker followers. You can have Bale in it if you think he can handle looking the part of an aged Batman and Bruce Wayne, but I doubt it. I'd rather see Bruce Willis as Wayne/Bats. And (wait for it) we get to see Superman in a movie with Batman and not worry about the past Supes or any planned for reboot. Cause this is all in an alternate future. And I'd love to see Jon Hamm (MadMen) as the Big Blue Boy Scout, doing his anonymous best to fight for Truth, Justice and a perverted version of the American Way.

I definetly think Nolan should pursue a third movie.
Though he should take his time and get it right. I'd wait 5+ years to see the next one just so that its good enough for Nolan. Of course, we all know he wont beat TDK, but none of us expect him to. And yes, it will be difficult to write out The Joker, but he'll find a way, because lets face it. Replacing someone as big as The Joker isnt a smart move on Nolan's part. So, the big question becomes: Who is Batman's next villian? The one that will bring him back as the protector of Gotham? and who should play him?
Here's my theory, and one shared by MANY others:
The Riddler played by... dun dun dunnn
Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp would be perfect for Nolan's Gotham. He's definetly dark enough, and hes a great actor.
Sure, he might have been better for Burton's world, but I think he could pull Edward Nigma off brilliantly.
and as for the side villian. We all heard Lucius Fox say "should do fine against cats"
yes, Catwoman. but who should play her.
Honestly, I have no idea, but it should be someone who is Dark, Sexy, and a tad bit crazy. Let's face it, youve got to be somewhat loony to dress as a cat and rob places.
