Cinematical has just received this exclusive clip from the documentary Until the Light Takes Us, which will enjoy its premiere at the upcoming 2008 AFI Fest in Los Angeles. And for those interested in learning a bit more about this flick -- which was just featured as one of LA Weekly's Critics Picks -- then I have three words for you: Norwegian Death Metal. Gotta be honest and say this ain't exactly the type of music I rock out to on a daily basis, but the doc itself looks pretty interesting.
From the synopsis: This riveting documentary provides a voyeuristic glimpse into the world of Norwegian Black Metal - an extreme sub genre of heavy metal, which has been met with considerable hostility from mainstream culture, mainly due to the misanthropic and anti-Christian ideology of many bands as well as its sound. The founders of this morbid branch of heavy metal consist of a handful of surprisingly articulate Norwegian teenage friends with a complex set of extreme nationalistic, anti-Semitic and anti-Christian beliefs. These young men actually practice what they preach, engaging in rampant church burning, suicide and even murder, while in the process becoming some of the most notorious criminals in European history." You can read more about Varg Vikernes, who's the man featured in the clip below and one of the architects of this underground music-art-political scene, over here. And if you're in Los Angeles for AFI Fest, do pop in and let us know what you think of the film (we'll try to have a review up real soon).

Black Metal isn't Death Metal :-/
also, modern black metals moved pretty far away from the whole, anti-semitism+church burning ideals of the original bunch of bands.
but who wants to watch a movie about the new less hateful bands, not me that's who

I saw a rough cut of this. This movie is the real sequel to Paradise Lost. With a touch of Silence of the Lambs, by way of Lynch. I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished film. It's arty, brainy and scary. With really nice cinematography.
I'm not sure what the other commenter is talking about, but I thought the film was a great window into a world that I hadn't known much about, and from what I saw, it's about a lot more than just the scene it's ostensibly about. But they were still working on it. I'm excited to see how it turned out.

Why does anybody give a damn about what that murdering piece of shit Vikernes has to say? They better have interviewed other bands. What people don't know is that there are A LOT of people who want Vikernes dead for what he did, and I have to agree with them. Hopefully they cover that in the doc.

@ vassago41301: well.. while I, and everyone should, convict the murder you should also know the complete details and leave the idea off "Varg kill Euronymous because of a power struggle". You should understand that the situation was far more complex, and I hope that this will also be covered in the documentary. Also, interviewing Varg isn't really strange or something has he has been highly influental for the latere Black Metal bands and such..
Also, I really hope I can see the docu in the near future (as I live in Holland)...

Soooo, this guy kills his black metal (big in mexico by the way, oh and norway) buddy, is sent to jail (subsequently enters odin-like status with his compadres) and "escapes" but is later caught with explosive and guns? First off, Norways prison system is absurd. Murderers get time off to wander around for a week and see their family every year? How is this hard time? His "escape" was just not coming back to his cell at the end of the week, hardly an escape. Second, what a f*cked up system that he is idolized for his twisted beliefs. Watching him age in prison is about all I want to see of this trasher, not some glammed out "thoughtful" doc on his soundbites. He's a little scumbag who latched onto an ideology that nords need in order to validate their low birthrates. How many right wingers can you fit into that theater?

The synopsis is hilarious... Blowing up churches, screaming about *killing* Christians, murdering people.
Now, *where* exactly is the hostility coming from? Oh yeah, mainstream society.
Nice try.
