'Spider-Man 4' Gets a Pulitzer Prize-Winning Writer
Filed under: Deals, Scripts, Comic/Superhero/Geek
Okay, so the truth is a bit less exciting than the headline might suggest, since David Lindsay-Abaire, who is signing on to write the screenplay for Spider-Man 4, also wrote Inkheart and had a hand in the awful, low-rent Robots. So we're not exactly getting John Updike, here. Still, Lindsay-Abaire did win a real, honest-to-goodness pulitzer for his 2007 Broadway play Rabbit Hole, which he's also currently adapting for the screen. (He got a Tony, too.) This means they'll be scrapping a previous draft by Zodiac's James Vanderbilt -- or whatever he had managed to write, since just a short while ago Sam Raimi was claiming that he still didn't have a script. Of course, we have no idea what the plot is, though it hasn't stopped us from speculating. Will it be Lizard? Maybe it'll be Lizard.
Anyway, Raimi is excitedly returning, as we know, and Tobey Maguire has signed on too. The Hollywood Reporter story insists that Kirsten Dunst is "expected to return" as well. My stance on all of this is pretty clear-cut: I love this character and Raimi's take on him, think the third film was criminally underappreciated, and want more, as soon as possible. And I'm glad that they've brought on a serious, thoughtful writer, Robots or no Robots. This franchise deserves it.

With regards to Spiderman 3 being underappreciated, my biggest gripe is that they did too little with Venom. It was cool to see him, but I believe the character has more than enough depth, not to mention fan following, to warrant his own film, or at least more screentime than we got. So my hope for Spidey 4 is that they figure a way that Venom survived and
bring him back. They are welcome to throw in the Lizard if they want to. Another way to go perhaps go is a more "Dark Knight" direction and introduce the Kingpin in a realistic, modern day crime-boss type film. Of course they haven't touched on Electro or Shocker or Rhino or Vulture or... Hey, how about Carnage?

I hope they can breath new life into Spidey with number 4. But how long can the Peter/MJ romance be drawn out? Would the Lizard be an interesting villain? It may be time for the movies to get a little more bold. They may have to invent a villain or reimagine one from the comics. Make Peter Parker more adult. Change the costume. Do something, anything to make it fresh again.

They made a Spiderman 3? I thought that was the big screen debut of the Ambiguously Gay Duo! That explains all the weird costume choices...
Wake me up when the hero doesn't start sobbing like a little b*tch in the middle of the film.

I think Spiderman 3 was overappreciated, they should donate the money they made from it to make a good movie, one where they don't f up the storyline from the first movie.

"Underrapreciated!?" I find it very, very hard to believe you typed that with a straight face. The movie that should have been 5 with the world's most useless love triangle and greatest bastardization of ANY heroes motivations is underrapreciated? Uncle Ben's murder is THE most important part of Spidey's mythos, something that simply should not be messed with, and yet they made it an accident by the freaking Sandman, fundamentally altering the guilt factor that taught him that "with great power comes great responsibility." Oh, and did I mention that we have to listen to Kirsten Dunce sing not once, but twice! Please, please tell me you were joking.

Bryan, I agree that bar scene of Kirsten ought to be cut completely and also the scene before when Parker is strolling-strutting about eye-balling every female that walks by. I about expect "Staying Alive" to be blaring when that was going on.What is left is at least acceptable.

I love Spider-Man also, I think this writer is good and have seen his work before. I am glad the movie is coming together and that everyone will be back. I also hope that they do 4 and 5 together.
and I also liked Spider-Man 3, as well as 1 and 2.
