The Farrelly Bros. Grab 'The Three Stooges' ...Nothing is Sacred
Filed under: Comedy, Deals, Remakes and Sequels
While you might think that the end of the Howard brothers would mean the end of the Three Stooges, Variety reports that Peter and Bobby Farrelly are bringing the Stooges to the new millennium. After years of trying at Warner Bros., the brothers turned to MGM -- a studio that has not only welcomed the idea, but also picked out a release date already. Should the film get cooking soon, Three Stooges will be released opposite Sherlock Holmes on November 20, 2009. They must really love the idea to pit it against Robert Downey Jr.
Me, however, I don't love it. I grew up on the Three Stooges; they were a mainstay of my house. You cannot have Larry, Moe, and Curly without Larry, Moe, and Curly. You can argue the finer points of Curly love, and whether any of his many replacements worked as well, but there's a reason that the trio ended with the deaths of Larry and Moe. Sure, Moe tried to replace Larry in 1975, but since he died a few months later, nothing came of it.
And the Howard brothers plus Mr. Fine aside, I can picture what a Farrelly version of the Stooges will be, and I don't like it. The REAL trio did hundreds of films, so check those out instead, like the clip above.

I think you are right. The Stooges were the kings of short comedy and they will have to be "reimagined" for this bad idea of a movie. I don't think anyone really wants to see that but the Farley Brothers.

What they don't realize is that what was funny about the stooges, was, well, the stooges. Not the setup. Not the premise. Not any single plot. Not the characters.
What was funny was the three men, basically being their goofy selves. They were three people who happened to be funny. They were not three characters that could just be played by some trendy young comedians.
So I guess the countdown begins until we see a new Marx Brothers too, right?

techstar...you are correct. Stooges were funny for being funny. even Shemp and Curley Joe might not have been originals, but they were funnny.
and i was also thinking, what's next..the Marx Brothers??

JayC- Actually, Shemp was the original. Then younger brother Curly took over the gig. When Curly's health went down the tubes, Shemp returned .. only to pass away a few years after Curly.

They can TRY the Marx Brothers, but in the end, they're far to smart for today's Hollywood. You'd get some horribly dumbed-down version without any of the true brilliance and subversiveness of the originals.
Similar things can be said about the Stooges I suppose, as slapstick can be VERY hard to pull off effectively.

Indeed. The Stooges made The Three Stooges, not two hack directors who can't come up with an original thought to save their lives and a "nationwide American Idol-like search for Curley". Geeez, do something original like another remake of King Kong. Blah.
