Jessica Alba Finally Gets to Play a Hooker
Filed under: Drama, Thrillers, Casting
You know, I'm not trying to be crude, but if your average small town prostitute looked anything like Jessica Alba, the world's oldest profession could probably give the modeling industry a run for its money. Variety reports that Alba has signed to play a small town hooker in Michael Winterbottom's noir thriller, The Killer Inside Me. Killer is based on the novel by Jim Thompson, and Robert Weinbach and John Curran (The Painted Veil) have already written the adaptation. Back in 1976, Stacy Keach had starred in a feature film version of the novel about "a West Texas sheriff and his downward spiral from a boring small-town cop into a ruthless, sociopathic murderer." This time Casey Affleck will pick up where Keach left off as the sheriff, and Alba will play the role of a small town hooker. Now to be fair, I'm trying really hard not to think back to all those interviews where Alba turned her nose up at roles that traded on her sexuality; you know, like playing hookers....or strippers.
Killer is just the latest in Alba's crusade to finally be taken seriously as an actress, and frankly, she could use the help. Between her last summer flop, The Love Guru, and lackluster reviews for her work in Awake and The Eye, it's not like great parts are being offered left and right. Hopefully Killer will change all that, because if the career trajectory of your average starlet has taught us anything, it's that playing a hooker is usually one of the first steps on the road to being an actor with a capital 'A'. Well, that and looking unattractive, but I guess that's what her upcoming role in An Invisible Sign of My Own is for.

Well, that's true, but she's been really sexually charged in a lot of movies. It's not like she'll show anything as a hooker though... she'll be the first hooker that never takes off her clothes!
I actually liked both The Eye and Awake, which likely puts me in the minority... but I thought the plots of both movies were wholly original, even if some of the thrills were familiar. I do see just about everything with Jalba in it, and she usually makes good acting choices, despite her not understanding that movie characters are works of fiction, and do not reflect on her unless she wants them too.
I loved Charlize Theron in Monster... wonder if this film will be anything like that?

I intentionally did not mention that it was a remake to see if you'd say that. I was right.

I won’t be crude either. You’re right “it’s not like great parts are being offered left and right” to Jessica Alba. Jessica’s been offered mostly terrible parts because of being stereotyped as a latina. Demi Moore taught us what’s best for your average starlet when she did a “Striptease” -- how many years ago? -- and showed us all how a girl from the other side of town could get out of her clothes and poll-dance: become “an actor with a capital ‘A‘.” Jessica’s a girl who knows she was born with a body that attracts men; she may want to use the advantage given her in that body to it’s best advantage before it fades. Simply put, it’s not enough for Jessica to be good, she has to be good for something. If her body can help get asses in seats in theatres her career trajectory could improve. There are also men born with bodies that attract women in droves. I have a screenplay about a _Donn Juan_ like character who attracts women in droves. It would be best if the women who Donn attracts look like Jessica and there are many such women in the screenplay. I would rather not merely be good myself, but be good for something, too, and so offer to Jessica first look at my screenplay to see if she’s interested in playing one of the girls who willingly gets seduced by _Donn_? This is a chance for her career trajectory to improve exponentially.

Alright, who let you into the movie news business? She played an "exotic dancer" in Sin City, didn't she? Isn't that about as close to playing a "hokker" as one can get? Sheesh....your weak movie fu is no good here.

OK, so, it is of course early morning for me here at work and I can't be bothered to even check my own spelling...sorry, meant to say "Hooker", not "hokker" (unless of course that is Dutch for hooker??)

SOS, your comment about her being offered terrible parts simply because of her being stereotyped as a "LATINA", doesn't make any since. Thinking of most her roles off the top of my head, its hard for me to find a movie where she was "stereotyped" as a latina...FANTASTIC FOUR, SIN CITY, THE EYE, AWAKEN,GOOD LUCK CHUCK..i mean none of those in anyway say to me " man, she would be such a better actress, if only it wasn't for these damn latina stereotypes." (not saying any of those movies were decent anyway.).The reason for her terrible choices is because of the usual, contract obligations, poor choices on her part, and the fact that she is a young, sexy, charasmatic women. Its hard in Hollywood for an attractive sex symbol such as Alba, to be taken serious and to be offered roles where her acting can stand out. Its not like Alba is a great actress, she has to rely on her looks to carry a film, because her acting skills can't. I mean Jolie and Scarlett Jo, (to name a few) are an example of actresses who are sexy and considered sex symbols in their own right, who CAN act, and who are both offered their share of good roles, i mean they do get their own garbage roles now and then, but both have proven on several occasions that they can act, and that their being sexy won't be the only deciding factor in future roles.
