Full 'Star Trek' Trailer Arrives Online!

Well, we all kinda expected this, didn't we? The brand new full-length trailer for Star Trek debuted in front of Quantum of Solace this weekend, and since Paramount wanted to wait until Monday to bring it online, a whole host of folks have recorded it inside the theater and posted the trailer to YouTube. I'm sure the studio will make sure these trailers are removed from YouTube shortly, so either get your good look in now or wait until Monday, when the trailer will arrive via the film's official website.
Based on what we see here, though, the flick definitely looks enticing. My favorite part wasn't the opening with young Kirk or the ridiculous-looking action sequences, but when Simon Pegg (as Scotty) says something like, "I like this ship - it's exciting!" We get a little dialogue from the new Spock and Kirk, so I'm curious to hear what you fans think of the new look and sounds of Star Trek? Of course we'll have a more thorough discussion when a better version of this trailer hits on Monday, but feel free to throw in your two cents below.
Star Trek hits theaters on May 8, 2009.

Ha! I thought the opening sequence with a young Kirk in the car was an ad before the preview and almost turned it off.

I admit I'm biased against this movie. I grew up on Classic Trek and believe that while of course there is no problem with multiple actors playing Hamlet or James Bond, there are only one Kirk and Spock for me.
That being said, I will go see this to see Nimoy as the old Spock once more, and the fellow playing McCoy looks like he'll be fun to watch. He seems to channel DeForest Kelley without resorting to mere mimicry.
We aging nerds know, however, that Kirk was not a James Dean bad boy in his youth. He was serious, studious and "positively grim" cadet, as he tells McCoy in the episode "Shore Leave." Interestingly, the young Captain Picard was more like this interpretation of Kirk.
And it will be quiet a suspension of disbelief to see how a recent graduate of Starfleet Academy ends up commanding the Enterprise, stepping over other officers on the ship, including Spock, who were already serving under Captain Pike. It is akin to a sailor fresh out of Annapolis taking command of an aircraft carrier. Also, Scotty looks too young, Chekov wasn't on the bridge till Season Two, etc.
These and many other changes in the canon are sure to gall purists. And I am eagerly awaiting Shatner's inevitable on-line comments, since he is still having a tantrum about being left out of this movie. Get a life, Bill. You took your 30 pieces of silver to kill off the boyhood hero of millions in a lame way in a mediocre movie 14 years ago. You get to sympathy from this fan.

I'm with you 100%. This movie is going to dump all over the Trek continuum. Is this supposed to be a complete reset of Trek? Well it can't be because Nimoy's in it as Spock, right? I could almost accept it if it were a complete reboot with no connection to the existing Trek canon. If not, this movie is going to frustrate me to no end.
Having said that, the trailer looks good and it looks like I'm going to have to put away all that I know and grew up with in regards to Trek. It'll be hard...that's why I couldn't accept the series Enterprise. And I'm prepared for the younger generation to say I'm old and out of touch, but hey I grew up with Trek and I expect certain things.

I gotta say, my doubts about J.J. Abrams' re-vision of TOS being relevant in today's time, those doubts are now gone. Not only does this version fit comfortably in the future as we could hope and expect (I'm talking appearance, technology, personas, etc.), but it sucks you in as you're watching it! Holy crap this movie looks awesome!
I can't wait to see it in the theater during Solace tomorrow, and online in HD on Monday!

Doesn't do much for me. Not a JJ Abrams or Trek fanboy... Sorry, but this is torrent fodder for me at best.

I too thought the bit with the car was an ad.
And notice the curious lack of audience reaction ... some movie theater employee stayed up late the other night ...

The audience in my theater loved it. I loved it and I am someone who wanted the original Star Trek back in the day. I was a major trekkie in my youth, but I liked this a lot. I felt it had that sense of wonder missing from all the new Trek shows. They managed to make Star Trek prosaic. This brings back the excitement, but it also seems to have a cool vision of the future that is much more in keeping with my youthful fantasies of seeing Trek done right some day.
Yes, there will be differences, but this suggests they got it right. I am looking forward to this.

So sick of motorcycle bad-boys being the only script device used when showing a hero's origins. Think wolverine, think grindhouse, think ghost rider. What a sickening cliche to use with Kirk who actually has a solid origin myth that does not involve rerunning a kawasaki love dream. The actor playing Spock is dreadful looking and the fabricated tension between the McCoy look-a-like and him is totally emo garbage. Not real.
The film looks like a total car commercial...lacked any soul whatsoever, will destroy the franschise. Pull the plug on jj abrams, he is killing American film culture! He does not deserve anything he has at all!

I wish I had a time machine and could change the timeline by introducing JJ’s, Orci’s and Kurtzman’s parents to birth control.
C’mon guys… Kirk drinks Budweiser? Are they wearing Rolex watches, Nike Space Marine combat boots and Microsoft Zune tricorders? Is there a McDonald’s space station with drive thru docking port too?
And I'm not digging the new Enterprise inside or out. And what’s up with the exposed printed circuit board looking things on the bridge? You would never do that with a real mission critical system. It’s like putting the motherboard on the outside of your PowerBook, duh. It looks cheesier than the Lost In Space remake. Or Galaxy Quest.
I bet these guys would make the actors work in front of a green screen to do their scenes with CG’d tribbles that, oh by the way, now have a single eye that extends from an (until now) unknown pouch.
It’s also interesting to note how the film makers have circled the wagons in an attempt to give themselves credibility and appear as nice guys by enlisting Nimoy, James Cawley and the late Dr. Randy Pausch.
This reminds me of the old Abraham Lincoln story:
Abraham Lincoln posed this question: “How many legs does a dog have?” The reply of course was four.
Lincoln asked, “If we call the tail a leg, then how many legs does a dog have?” The reply: Five.
“No,” Lincoln said, “Just because you call a tail a leg doesn’t make it so.”
Well guys, just because you call it Star Trek doesn’t make it so.
I wish JJ would open up that damn silly Mystery Box he always talking about. Perhaps he’ll find a clue inside.
If not, the box of really dead Sea Monkeys in there deserve a proper burial.

Oh my god that looks dreadful. I wasn't expecting much and somehow it's even worse than I expected. The stupid thing is, the movie's probably going to do well regardless of (or even because of) how callously it treats Trek canon. I'm honestly amazed at the number of people who've responded already who say that they're fans of the original series and still think this looks good. Then again, between the fact that I just don't seem to like JJ Abrams (his IMDb page contains not a single title that I could really say I liked) and the fact that I think movies should respect their source material as much as possible (whether that means earlier movies or tv series, or books that are being adapted), clearly this movie wasn't made for me. I can tell you now that I won't be watching it, even for the sake of seeing Leonard Nimoy as Spock again.

All of you die hard trekies need to get a life. Ruin Trek cannon? Please, it's a freakin TV show. It had a good run with numerous spin-offs and movies, which I've been a fan of since I was a kid. Like it or not though this franchise was dead...the movies lately have been lame and Enterprise sucked.
You all should be happy JJ took this project on because if he didn't then Trek would just fade away. Besides, if your so worried about Trek history then IGNORE THIS MOVIE! DON'T GO SEE IT! Just sit at home read the numerous books, watch the reruns and the old movies on your VCR and DVDs.
Damn it Jim, it's fiction, not real life!
