Discuss: The New 'Star Trek' Trailer is Now Online!
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Trailer Trash, Movie Marketing, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

Over the weekend, the new full-length Star Trek trailer debuted in front of Quantum of Solace, as well as in shoddy bootlegged form over on YouTube. Thankfully, Paramount has finally debuted that sucker online in glorious HD, and you can check it out over on Apple right now. Go ahead ... we'll wait here.
Since I've never been a hardcore Trek fan (or Trekkie, or Trekker, or TrekWTF), I can't pinpoint all the little things this trailer either gets right or wrong regarding the Trek mythology. I will say, though, that it looks to have all the makings of a big, exciting summer blockbuster and I'm sure audiences will devour it come May. Later on this evening, Cinematical will be joining Trek director J.J. Abrams for a very special presentation of footage from the new film, so we'll definitely be back to let you know how it looks, feels, sounds, etc ... And if there's anything specific you'd like us to try to ask Abrams, let us know in the comments.
In the meantime, feel free to sound off on the new trailer below. Is this what you expected? And are you more excited or less excited about the film after watching this preview?
Star Trek arrives in theaters on May 8, 2009.

I liked it but i hope they focus on characters more then action. It was the characters that made trek so great.

Speaking as someone who isn't too familiar with the franchise other than enjoying scattered episodes here and there, I'm not too impressed.
Though Simon Pegg as Scottie (Scotty?) is a definite pluss.

I guess you don't have to be (or at least look) very old to be captain of a star ship. Or is this Kirk before he was given the chair?

Ryan,
Yes, this is a prequel of sorts that shows you how Kirk and Spock and the rest of their crew originally came together. That's why everyone looks so young!

Its way before he becomes captian. The captain is Pike (who commanded the Enterprise before Kirk). I think kirk is supposed to be a lieutenant.

As someone who stopped caring about Original Trek after the third film, and lost interest in the Next Generation and all subsequent shows about 1991 (although I enjoyed "First Contact"), this looks like it could be what brings me back on board. And the rumors of how they are both staying true to continuity while rebooting the whole thing at the same time is brilliant.
And if you really really want to wallow in that stuff about positive outlook on the universe and characters and whatnot, then there's (let me count... two, three.... carry the seven...) um, a bajillion episodes, films and books that go over the same dull ground. It's time for Star Trek to enter the 21st Century and insert some honest-to-goodness wowee effects and action and a story that has some real meat to it, not another glorified episode of the TV series.

I think I made myself clear in the previous thread about this but if the script is good and if they make room to allow for the character relationships to develop meaningfully, then I'd say this might have a chance of being good.

If JJ Abrams other films/shows are any indication, he always pays more a crap tone of attention to the characters' stories... but what's great is that he doesn't sacrifice plot for it. What he's able to do is take that character building and make it part of the plot... as seen in Lost, Cloverfield, MI:3 (to a certain extent).
I for one, can't wait. One thing I'm glad to see is Chris Pine fitting into the role perfectly. A lot of people were hating on his selection but I've seen him a few times and I had high hopes.
Love the music too!

Wait... Did Kirk just say "Buckle Up" and high five someone. If this is an indication of what the rest of the script is like then I think I will pass.
Good god JJ Abrams is so overrated.

No actually, he said buckle up and patted I think McCoy on the shoulder as if to say "get ready, we're in for it now." I don't think this is an indication of the script, if anything it's a good indication that they got parts of the crew relationship right. Kirk is brash and cocky and has a bit of a sense of humor to him, and he knows that the cantankerous, space adventure-hating McCoy isn't looking forward to anything overly exciting on the Enterprise. Hence the "buckle up" and the pat on the shoulder.
And yeah, I'm a Trek fan, but I was initially skeptical when they said they were going back to pre-TOS for the movie. But from all the stuff I've seen and the Euro reports on the footage that cinematical will see tonight, I'm looking forward to the new take on Trek.

The trailer was very good and should wash away any doubt that the movie is not faithful to the original series.

I have a very geeky question for Mr Abrams... In the PR photo of the Enterprise that was released the other week, it appears the patten of the lights on the edge of the saucer is exactly the same as the pattern of the TOS-era movie Rnterprise... Mr Abrams has said a physical model of the Enterprise exists, so I'd like to know if ILM modified the existing model for this movie, or if this model is all-new?

This is going to be good but its also going to be a far cry from the original, there's just too much of a time lapse and the original actors are too iconic for their boots to ever be fully filled. I was raised by a full blown Trekkie and I talk about it more on goodmoviebadmovie.blogspot.com

This looks like a summer blockbuster I will be looking forward to, and there is not too many of those anymore. I am not a trekkie and to be quite frank do not give a stuff whether or not this is true to the original series, I have a high level of trust in Mr Abrams to get it right.
Looks great.

Is the HD trailer screwing up for anyone else?
Trailer 2 gives me the old teaser and Trailer 1 (The teaser) gives me a trailer for Cloverfield. WTF!?!?!?!?

The trailer is excellent. A great indication of what Star Trek is suppose to be. The problem with the trailer and hopefully not the movie is 'attention to detail.' The trailer has Spock's image reversed when choking Kirk, which is fine, but the insignia is incorrectly on the right shoulder of Spock and of course reversed. Major fail.

definitely not a trekkie and i've only partially enjoyed some of the movies. i tried watching some of the older shows but just can't get past the fact that they're very dated.
but after seeing this trailer, i'm really looking forward to this movie. looks fantastic.

I've really been trying not to think about this too much and up until today I didn't see any of the trailers until they showed one before "Quantum Of Solace" and I see some really serious problems ahead for this movie.
It seems like Paramount will never learn, Star Trek fans HATE it when the studio rewrites Star Trek history. The plot is still a little vague from the trailer but based on things we know from the original series Captain Kirk did not go to the Star Fleet Academy with either Spock, Scotty and probably Dr. McCoy. We know (from the episode The Cage) that Spock was already serving on the Enterprise with Captain Pike when everyone else was most likely still a junior officer.
Visually it appears to be a great movie but fans are just not going to like it if they change the original story too much.

I would dread be J.J. Abrams with a tsunami of geeks bothering the crap out of every little detail on this one. Of course, when the big bucks come in and more than the average Trekkie gets to see a well made summer block buster, he won't give a damn anymore.
Get over it, it looks fun and entertaining. I was a Star Wars geek, you deserve the same degree of disappointment from a prequel...just kidding, it will be better than Lucas, that's for sure.
