Poll: How Much Will 'Twilight' Make This Weekend?

The week you Twilight fans have been waiting for has finally arrived, and in just a few days from now entire worlds will collide! Yup, I'm talking about civilized people who decided to skip on over to see Quantum of Solace in its second week versus TWILIGHT FANS GALORE! Tons of screaming pre-teen girls and their equally-as-obsessed mothers storming movie theaters across the country, demanding their Bella, their Edward ... their blood!
We kid, but it's always fun to ponder how well a hotly-anticipated film will do in its opening weekend. Could Twilight beat Quantum of Solace's $70 million take? Is that even possible? Or does the Twilight fanbase appear larger than it really is? When it's all said and done, what if Twilight fails to top $40 million in its opening weekend? Would that be considered a failure? And if not, what would be considered a failure? If Twilight doesn't meet a certain number at the box office this weekend, could those three Twilight sequels currently in development be in jeopardy? So many questions, so many different possibilities -- how well do you think Twilight will do this weekend?

quantum of solace was disappointing. lack of character development. just a action movie.

Let's see ... Generic vampire flick with no significant star power. Sure the books sold, but the trailers (footage, teasers) have been pretty dull. If I didn't know it was a book, I'd be wondering why this didn't go straight to video.
My take: It will make $25 -$30 million, and in it's second week have a huge drop off.

uhh techstar25, it should go like this: lets see.. movie based on an insanely popular book series (u shouldve seen the midnight opening of breaking dawn), fans have been very pleased with the trailers, girls will bring their boyfriends dragging in mroe money!
My take: If harry potter can make 90 million in its first weekend, this one can make at least 60 million.

I guess what I was really pointing out is that the trailers haven't done much to bring in anybody other than fans of the book. However, I'm probably underestimating the size of the fanbase.

I do think that the Money-making aspect of Twilight is being overblown a bit, because it's been pretty clear to me that Twilight hasn't approached Harry Potter status just yet... it's coming closer, but not yet.
I voted for it to make somewhere between $30 million and $50 million in your poll.
I enjoyed the book series a good bit, but I think the movie will help it reach a much wider audience who didn't know anything about it until now. I think it will take off after this movie release, and become bigger with each subsequent film. Plus, the budget will be bigger next go round, for those hung up on that sort of thing.
I don't think star power is a problem like techstar25 does... no one knew who Dan Radcliffe and Rupert Grint were either.

I don't think it's going to do nearly as well as some people have predicted. That whole series seems to have a fairly locked audience. Harry Potter really appealed to everyone, where Twilight is gunning for the teenage girl audience. It really hasn't tried to capture anyone outside their target.
Plus the appeal is gone because the book series is over. Harry Potter was exciting because the series wasn't finished. Rowling could say what elements from the movies were foreshadowing elements in the future books. I'm sure the next 3 movies (HBP and DH1 and 2) are going to hurt because the book series is over too.

I would agree with the locked audience argument if Titanic didn't become the biggest box office ever on the backs of those teenage girls.
But, I've gotta say, before the movie trailer hit I'd never even HEARD of Twilight, so it's doesn't seem as big as Harry Potter, which I'd heard of before the movies started coming out.

I disagree. The great thing about Meyer's book is that it appeals to all ages. While I think mostly females, the age limit doesnt exist. I am 23 and I think that is old enough to not classify myself with the teenie boppers anymore. I saw the midnight showing on Thursday and I dragged my boyfriend to see it to. He said it was good. Not great but good. Which pleases me enough. I myself have to admit the film was not bad. It was a decent book-to-movie adaptation. People need to realize that it only had a small budget. 30-something million dollars ain't much people. Australia the new movie coming out with Nicole Kiddman has a budget of 150 million. Twilight the movie never started out to be as big as it has grown to be. The reason it has caught on so much is because the fans of the books are just that passionate. Myself included. So if you are giving this movie a bad review because of the cheezy special fx then clearly you don't know where Summit and the whole movie is coming from.
P.S. I hope they come to Jacksonville to film the movies when its time. I live there and it would be exciting for all of the "floridians"

I think it will do at least $60. People are nuts about this stuff for some insane reason.

Unfortunately, I think Dawson's Crypt is gonna do gangbusters this weekend. All the Hot Topic kids are going line up. I used to think the Harry Potter movies were lame, but this makes Harry Potter look like The Dark Knight.

If I didn't read Cinematical, I would have never known about this movie and the book. So far I have only seen one commercial about this film. I think it will do between between 30-35 million and will drop after this. Next week they have to go against 4 Christmases (Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn) and Transporter 3. If they don't get their money this week I can see it dropping to 3rd place on the chart next week.

Here is the real deal. I never heard of Twilight until the San Diego Comic Con this past summer. The Summit Booth was always packed with teenage girls, twenty-something females, mothers and fathers, all trying to get free stuff. =) Then I read the books and fell in love with the series. Now I am a mother of two teenage boys who turn there noses up at me and call me Emo. And the funny thing is the fan base is bigger than you guys think. The simple fact is it is not just a "teenager" agnst filled story, but something that touches alot of women of all ages and some men that is making it as huge as it is. I mean there are countless websites dedicated to all things twilight from quotes to merchandise! There is even one about a guy who is reading the stories and blogging about his experiences as a male reading this story. That one is acutally pretty funny. So bottom line is people are under estimating this movie. It will do huge numbers. So far the midnight shows are already sold out. And remember Buffy the vamp slayer series? Well you have alot of those fans that will eat this movie series up. Remember that there are alot of people who love vampy movies who don't like to read. So I predict big things for this movie. And I also believe that it will continue to do big for the rest of the year. I've seen the trailers, read the books and I can say that I am excited.

Well said Purplelush:) I competely agree with you. I guess i can be considered middle aged I'm 31 almost 32 mother of three and I love this series. oh and by the way I am by no means sexually frustrated or missing anything. My husband is fabulous- I don't know why they say that about the audience only being teens and middle aged sexually frustrated women. Judge Judge Judge... (I saw that comment on the article about reviews so far.)

I think it will do extremely well at the box office this weekend. All of the midnight showing are selling out and not just to teenage girls who have to go to school the next day. I know a lot of adults who are going--both male and female--that really liked the book series as much as the teens. Also, I get so tired of hearing Twilight compared to Harry Potter. The only thing they have in common is that they are both book series that were developed into movies. Harry Potter is about a boy wizard. Twilight is an extraordinary love story between a mortal and a vampire.

Twilight is going to do extremely well. I am a Twilighter and I know that every girl in my school is going to see the movie. I know that several of us will see Twilight more than once even if it completely sucks(which wont happen)

I call on all the Twilight series fans to pitch in and let’s donate money to find a better Director, Screenplay writer and Producer for the upcoming sequels. Let’s try to cast someone who can grasp the role of Bella!!! Edward was great, he did what he could considering what he was playing with.
S. Meyer deserves her Romance to be depicted the way she did!
Let’s not forget…We need new Make-up artists as well.
