Watch This: Original Ending for 'Little Shop of Horrors'
Filed under: Comedy, Horror, Music & Musicals, Romance, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

As any hardcore Little Shop of Horrors fan can tell you -- and there are tons of us -- the 1986 cinematic version once had a much darker ending ... one that was much more in line with the dual source material of this musical and this Corman flick. But since this was 1986 and Frank Oz's movie had a lot of funny people in it ... a few test audiences deemed the finale too dark, and so we got a so-so ending tacked on to an otherwise excellent musical comedy.
When Warner Bros. first released Little Shop of Horrors on DVD, the original ending was included as part of the special features -- but that release was recalled right quick, which means that most of us actually own this particular DVD. But now, through the magic of YouTube + Cinematical, we can finally sit down and pick through the original ending of Little Shop. Obviously it's not "final print" material in any way, but you can definitely get enough to make you wish, oh I dunno, that someone would toss some money at the flick and let Frank Oz re-create a director's cut.
So if you own the "original" WB DVD, well goody for you. The rest of us can watch the fascinating footage right after the jump...
Part A:
Part B:
Part C:
So why was the original DVD recalled? Some pointless argument between WB and David Geffen. For more on the original ending of Little Shop of Horrors, you should obviously refer to Wikipedia.

Thank you so much for this! I've always been a big fan of the musical and wanted to see this ending which was true to the original. However, man, it really is depressing! At the very least they could have kept Seymour's more heroic death from the play: he tries to kill Audrey II by jumping into her mouth with a knife, there's a pause and then she just spits out the knife. But still... this is great.

I'm very torn with this sequence. The puppeteering and miniature work on this is fantastic. It's everything one could ask for when watching a giant alien plant take over the world. However, part of the charm of the end of the play is that this sequence comes as a slap in the face - a "you're doomed" kind of thing that brings the leads back to warn you, showing that they've all become part of the plant as well. Great ending for a show, but it didn't work the way they did it for the movie.

Waited 20 years to see this! Understand why it was scrapped. It dis-joints u from the main characters, but, glad I saw it. A total 50's horror tribute. Any-who, anyone have the lost footage from Death Becomes Her with Tracey Ullman? Dying to see that as well.

That last bit reminded me of Cloverfield. I can imagine a mash-up ...

I still own the original with the alternate ending. Apparently it fetches a pretty good price these days. I'd trade it for a copy of Condorman, though.
