'X-Men: First Class' Actually Happening

The Avengers won't be the only Marvel superteam on the big screen -- the X-Men are returning! According to Variety, 20th Century Fox is kicking X-Men: First Class into gear by hiring Josh Schwartz to pen the screenplay. Schwartz was also offered the director's chair, but he declined, leaving the job open for now. Schwartz's specialty is teen fare -- he's the man behind Gossip Girl, The OC, and Chuck. Happily, Lauren Shuler Donner will be producing, so it should stay on the right track, and not stray too far into silly teen fare.
The studio is keeping quiet on the finer points, but it's unlikely that it will revolve around the teenage versions of Cyclops & Co, as the series X-Men: First Class actually does. Instead, they'll be using the young X-wannabes introduced in the previous three films, like Iceman, Angel, Rogue, Kitty Pryde, Jubilee (if you can call her cameo an introduction), and Colossus. I'd love it if they kept it current to the comics by mixing some of the Astonishing students, like Blindfold and Armor in -- especially if Armor replaced Jubilee.

It's inevitable that several of the young X-Men will be recast, as I don't see Ellen Page, Ben Foster, or Anna Paquin returning, though Shawn Ashmore might. There's also hints that Fox might recast some of the established X-Men in order to keep them around -- but given who was left standing at X3, that amounts to Beast and Storm, because you know Hugh Jackman would be willing to pop his claws in a scene or two. (Oh, my geek heart would soar if they would take his friendship with Kitty Pryde and run with it!) While I know this has the potential to be teen fluff, I'm actually pretty excited by this. The X-Men will always be my favorite superhero team, and I'll take a new class if it means seeing them on the screen again. I won't take The O.C. with mutant powers, though, so let's hope this is done relatively classy.

My first thought from the title was that they were somehow now postal delivery X-men.
Which would be cool in itself.

I would be excited about this except for the fact that Fox will micromanage this project in mediocrity just like almost all of their other genre films.

The X-Men deserve a shot at redemption. After what Ratner did to the series, it couldn't possibly get any worse, could it? Goodmoviebadmovie.blogspot.com

IIRC, 'The O.C' featured a storyline in one of its seasons in which Adam Brody created a comic book and tried to sell it. Good stuff, as I recall, so I imagine that Schwartz actually has some background and/or respect for comics and could (potentially) rein in the post-modern irony to produce something worthwhile -- at least on the page.

I'm very scared. As long as Rothman is nowhere near this it has potential. I don't see why the actors mentioned wouldn't return as all have said they would in interviews. If we get some decent news I'll be happier. If it is a prequel it shows promise as we were really thrown in to the Xmen world blatantly with the first movie. It could be a nice transition piece into a solid X4. If it is X4 then it needs to be big, big, big, dark, dark, dark and better have star power and for cryin' out loud give Collossus a russian accent! If I get a disney treatment of teen superheroes I will have to kill someone.

I like the idea, and gets rid of those actors we don't want to see anymore (I'm looking at you Halle). I would keep Angel and Iceman out of it though as they do nothing for the movies. I'd like to see Kitty and Colossus and finally see their romance hit the big screens. Then I'd start fresh and bring in some other characters we haven't seen as of yet for the more die hard fans.
Oh, one thing that should be done is bring back Nightcrawler, he should be the group's mentor/teacher. Now as to who should be a part of the group, well depends on what the movie is about. I almost am tempted to see a Mojoworld movie, so you could throw in Dazzler into the mix. Then maybe you could have Havoc and Polaris, or maybe even mix in a New Mutant or two with Cannonball, Wolfsbane and the like.

Could be on the right track in moving away from the bastardization that was The Last Stand.....I agree that a re-cast Nightcrawler would be great, as would a Colossus/Kitty angle. Another slant could be the introduction of Havok and his struggles of living in his brother's shadow.
A good cast of characters could include:
*Nightcrawler - teacher
*Emma Frost - teacher
*Colossus
*Shadowcat
*Havok
*Polaris
*Cannonball
*Rogue (with strength and invulnerability)
Personally, I'd like to see a story where the senior level x-men are fully incapacitated, and it falls on the new class to come of age and save the day. I like the Mojo idea, but it would have to be realistis, like the Mojo of the Ultimate X-men universe.

Don't know why people think the 3 X-men movies were not as good as they hoped. They are better than what Marvel has done to the X-men series since Chris Claremont left. They should of just paused any X-men comics until they could throw bundles of money at Chris Claremont to return to it. Current writers show they don't even deserve a chance at writing The Toxic Avenger.
Is Wolverine really an Avenger now? Dumb.
