For Your Consideration: 'The Dark Knight'

See below gallery for larger images of each
Above you will find the two For Your Consideration ads for The Dark Knight that have been running in Variety this week. One promotes Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor, while the other targets a Best Picture nomination for the film itself. With The Dark Knight approaching $1 billion at the box office, it'd be a stupid move on the Academy's part to not give this flick the credit it deserves. From a ratings standpoint, knowing The Dark Knight is up for a few big awards (including Best Picture) would probably bring in tons more viewers, and, well, from a normal human being standpoint, the movie is freaking awesome! Give it some love!
Of course, it's a comic book movie and we all know the serious adults who vote on Oscars don't take too kindly to them comic book kids stuff. Hopefully, though, they'll see what a terrific job Nolan did with his Batman follow-up and the unbelievable performance Ledger gave as Joker. Should Ledger find his way into a nomination, he'll most likely be up against folks like Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt), Josh Brolin (Milk), Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess) and Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder).
Check out larger versions of the above ads in the gallery below.

Heather Ledger deserves best actor, not supporting actor. Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Maggie Gyllenhaal are supporting actors, Heath Ledger is a Lead actor in Dark Knight.

Yes but he wasn't a 'lead character', it was still almost as Wayne centered as its predecessor. In fact, I think Aaron Eckhart had more screentime than Heath overall.
I'm not saying he wasn't terrific, but defiantly a supporting role.

He doesn't deserve any award or nomination. Give it to living people.

I suppose we shouldn't praise great works by mozart since he's dead.
A performance is still a performance living or dead.
The academy was mature enough to do it once for the film "Network", let's hope they dont allow external influences destroy a great performance forever.

Robert Downey Junior for Tropic Thunder!! You must be having a laugh. Don't get me wrong, funny movie and he was pretty good. But an Oscar??
How about Rav Patel from Slumdog Millionaire, I here that they are going to be putting him forward for best supporting actor. I am unsure as to why they would not want to avoid Heath Ledger and put him forward for lead actor, but I am guessing it fits more into the spirit of the movie and it's big cast.

Ledger is going to win Best Supporting Actor. No doubt about it.

Ledger better win! It's gotten to the point where it might be a bit awkward for whoever should win in his place. Rav Patel is Ledger's closest competition though. But still, Ledger's performance is a rare masterpiece, that cannot go unpunished.

I mean, it's that, or " Australia " * rolls eyes *
Ick.
And it IS awesome. The best picture of the year.
And stands alongside " There Will Be Blood " and " No Country for Old Men " as the best of the DECADE ( no other film follows ). Even if it can be easily construed as Republican ideological wank fodder for the most part. But I digress.
The Bush Jr. years, disastrous in it's scope of malaise, has given us some of the bestest, most disciplined, ponderous, complex, darkly intelligent films for a long time; it's mouthwash that's cleaned out the worst of the '90s ( i.e. Titanic ). It would be stupid for the Academy not to recognize this, one more time.
Kudos to DC, definitely. Great that they're vigorously chasing after all goodwill possible before the Watchmen debacle arrives....

Ledgers performance was great. However is it Oscar worthy? I don't know. I fear that because he died he will be considered over other performances that may be more worthy. That is not right. Of course, the Oscars to tend in that direction...a shame on the Academy for all the misplaced votes.
I would have no proiblem with Heath winning if his performance actually is the most worthy...but alas...there are plenty of other contenders who I hope have a chance to win dispite not having died. sounds harsh but with the Oscars such has to be noted.

Ledger should get an Oscar. Wall-E should get one for best cinematography. Cloverfield for sound mixing. And they should take the best picture one away from Crash, just as a sign of good will.
BTW - Warner messed up the blu-ray release of this. It has edge enhancement and you can see moire patterns on ties and some buildings. A-holes.
At least it has a whole 65minutes of behind the scenes material. The rest is made for TV fluff. Go to town on this fubar release spinematical.

lets face it heath ledgers death added a lot of hype to the release of this movie and the coming awards season. whille i dont think the academy should let hype or even the death of an actor effect their decision, all things aside heath ledgers performance of the joker as outstanding. he took a character whos other media portrayals were outdated and made it modern and edgy. he respected the character, unlike other movie villians (cough cough venom cough). everything from his voice, to his posture, to his laugh, to his grungy make up and hair were all part of his performance. not to mention the unique process he went through to prepare himself for the role. he took all the ideals the joker represents and fit them perfectly in christopher nolans very specific version of batmans world. every scene with the joker is dominated by his screne presence, and you can't look away. if thats not superb acting that i dont know what is, and for that he deserves the award.

I was watching '10 Things I Hate About You' Saturday evening and I still can't believe the charismatic, charming Heath from that film is the same one that played The Joker. Heath didn't just act in 'The Dark Knight' he created a performance that is going the be one for the ages.

Ledger will easily get the nomination for Best Supporting Actor. And I predict he will win it.
The Dark Knight will be nominated for Best Picture and Best Director, but might fall short of winning Best Picture. I think it might go to Slumdog Millionaire.

Those are some damn classy posters.
If Heath Ledger doesn't win...well, to quote Michael Caine, "Show me the performance that does."

Nice job swiping media created for one website and uploading it as your own without credit. I created both these scans for Batman-on-Film. http://www.batman-on-film.com/batmovienews.html

Nice job blatantly accusing us of something we did not do. For your information, a friend emailed both of these to me and didn't say where they came from -- only that they're running in Variety. If they originated over at BoF, by all means we'll give you credit. We're not like some other sites -- we don't roll like that.

Well I'm glad it was not intentional, but far too many sites do roll like that so don't take it personally. I created the media for Jett's site and I saw it here (and elsewhere), what am I supposed to think? You're not the only site I've contacted for running them without credit, so like I said it was nothing personal. I blame your friend then, not your site. I would appreciate the attribution for Jett's site, it's only proper.
I guess perhaps I should start watermarking.

I hope academy members all vote for Heath in the best supporting actor category. In 1989 Jack Nicholson did not get nominated for his Joker even though many though he would, Speculation has it that Voting members cast him both in the Best actor and best supporting categories thus canceling him out, as his overall votes were split between the two categories. I hope this dosen't happen here. Heath should be in the best supporting category with no confusion!
