'Twilight' Has Monster Opening Weekend!

The numbers just rolled in, and it looks like Twilight has grabbed a whopping $70.5 million in its opening weekend, slightly above earlier estimates of $45-65 million. For a film catered more toward young female audiences, these numbers are pretty damn impressive -- especially since these sorts of openings are usually reserved for big-budgeted action/superhero blockbusters featuring big names and lots of explosions. Twilight, however, starred the relatively unknown indie hopper Kristen Stewart and equally-as-unknown Robert Pattinson -- both of whom will no doubt return for the sequel, which was officially announced yesterday. Despite the Twilight army, Disney's Bolt still managed to squeeze out $27 million for third place, while Quantum of Solace dropped to second place with $27.4 million.
We'll have a full box office report tomorrow morning. Let us ask you this, though: Are you surprised at Twilight's $70 million take, or did you expect the film to make more?

I am surprised. When you guys had the poll asking what we expected it to make, I said somewhere in the $30-$50 million range. I wasn't sure that people who hadn't read the series would come, especially considering that trailers weren't anywhere on TV, from what I saw.
Somehow, Twilight just got promoted to death by way of talk shows and news outlets, so that helped considerably.
I am certainly happy for Summit. They deserve it. It's a great film that really captured the essence of the book, and didn't change anything so much as to make fans mad. I'm glad I went to see it at the theater too, the baseball game scene gave me goosebumps (That's when Muse kicks in... making things that much more exciting). So so good.

MCW: The week leading up to the movie release there were a ton of trailers shown during primetime shows. Especially on the fabulous CW channel. hehe
Now, I thought it'd do more. I chose the 90 mil option in your poll and I really thought it'd do about that much. Haha... I loved the movie despite its sometimes disjointed narrative and questionably bad acting moments, and absolutely loved the soundtrack. I can't wait for New Moon, Italy here we come! However, I have to say it, I really hope the last book Breaking Dawn never sees movie adaptation... on paper it's bad enough (not to say I didn't like it, I just don't want to SEE it... :S). Yay for Twilight though, this was definitely worth the wait.

LOVED it!!! Will probably go see it again in a few weeks when the furor has died down and I can actually watch it without having the tween scene hyperventilating when Rob or Taylor are on screen. It wasn't exactly like the book, but that was fine by me, I think all the key scenes of the book were featured in the movie. Rob and Kristen's chemistry is undeniable, I could literally feel them falling in love - JUST BEAUTIFUL! Can't wait for New Moon!!!!

Once the Friday returns came in, $70 million was hardly surprising. I'd say coming into the weekend, with Bolt and Quantum of Solace beside it, $70 million is even more surprising (although the audiences don't particularly overlap). 2008 seems to be the year of big opening weekend phenomena, and I think more remarkable than this big opening weekend is the arrival of two movies that open (back to back no less) with $70 million dollar hauls. I suppose a depression is when people need films and forms of escape the most. This may have accounted for additions to the group of non-core fans who contributed to Twilight's big opening.

Surprised, no way! Of course it was going to make that much are you kidding me? Look at the book sales and merchandise and tell me you didn't see this one coming! The Twilight is more than just a book to read or a movie to watch, it's personal on so many levels. Women every where relate and men are curios. The love triangle of Bella, Edward and Jacob will have people following this to the end with profits sky rocketing with each release. Having read all the books I have to say that Twilight IS the best book however New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn are not up to standard with Twilight. I really do believe that the movies will spare us from alot of the unnecessary drawn out portions of the novels and really hit the "story". As Summit brings in the profits of each movie, budgets will become substancial for each new release. Hold on tight because this ride is going to get crazy! I can't wait!

WOW!!! I knew it was going to open big!! I went to see it on Friday and it was packed. I am going to go see it again in a few weeks. I loved the movie and it was so cool seeing the book come to life. Robert and Kristen were perfect for the roles. Even Stephenie Meyer's cameo was great. Can't wait for *New Moon*!!!
Hope *Twilight* stays at the TOP!!!!

I knew it was going to be big. Twilight has become an obsession for so many people. Stephenie created a story that has become a part of so many people's lives. For everyone to think this is just a "tween" thing is SO wrong. I am 37 yrs old, and I fell in love with Edward from the first time Bella described him. Their story became a part of me. I mean everyone wants a Edward!! He's a Vampire, but he's there to protect and be everything to you. As for the movie..Robert Pattinson is my Edward. His portrayal was right on target. I loved how they kept "So the lion fell in love with the lamb" and "You are my brand of heroin"...That was how Edward was trying to describe to Bella about how much he was in love with her, but also how dangerous he was for her. :) I knew there was going to be many people who would be dissapointed with the movie, but I loved it!! I can't wait for New Moon and I feel very sure that with the extra money that has been made it will have great special effects for the Wolves and for the Volturi. And, I'm expecting Twilight to reach over $150mil by the time it stops running in Theatres...But, just wait for the DVD sales!! I'm already going to buy 2!!! :):)

I agree Twilight isn't just for teenager. I'm 31 I read all the books and loved the movie. I just wish they could make the movies longer to add more details. For the time they had I think they did a great job in including the main ingredients. I can't wait for the next movie.
