Movies We're Thankful For: Anchorman
Filed under: Comedy, Fandom, Movies We're Thankful For
There are only a few movies that I can watch over and over again, and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is one of them. I've always had an affinity for Will Ferrell, to the point of being baffled when I encounter someone who doesn't find him funny at all, and Anchorman is his greatest cinematic achievement. It's my go-to DVD when I'm in need of comfort food. If I'm feeling a little under the weather, or if old man trouble has been knockin' at my door, I just pop in Anchorman to help chase the blues away. The antics of Ron Burgundy, Brick Tamland, Champ Kind, Brian Fantana -- not to mention Veronica Corningstone, Ed Harken, Tits McGee, James Westfall, Dr. Kenneth Noisewater, and faithful ol' Baxter -- always cheer me up. Sixty percent of the time, it works every time.
There was even one day this summer when I felt like Ron Burgundy! It was in the middle of a record-breaking heatwave in Portland, and I was showing a visiting friend all the sights of downtown when we stopped at the legendary Voodoo Doughnut for a treat. Needing a beverage to wash it down, I got a small carton of milk -- milk goes great with doughnuts, right? -- and instantly thought of Ron Burgundy. There I was, walking down the street in 102-degree weather, slurping milk, some of it dribbling into my beard. "It's so damn hot! Milk was a bad choice!"
Happy Thanksgiving, Channel 4 News Team. And you stay classy, Ron Burgundy.

I *love* Anchorman and think Ferrell is pretty funny but Carell and Rudd own this movie as far as I'm concerned.

I can easily say that I like Will Ferrell, but it's the weirdest thing... I don't outright "LOVE" any movie he's been in. None of them have been perfect in my mind. Anchorman and Step Brothers are the closest he's come to perfect, but for some reason, I find that the blooper reels on his DVD and Blu-ray releases are funnier than the actual movies in many cases. I haven't watched the Anchorman DVD in a while, but I know there is a interview with an old dude (OK, tell me who he is, I'm sure I offended you by not knowing his name) and Will is downright hilarious in it. I almost liked the interview better than the movie.
And that is most certainly a bad thing. Special features and deleted scenes shouldn't be funnier than movies (See: "What Happens in Vegas" extras with Zach Galifianakis alone for further studying)
My search continues for a Will Ferrell movie that is as naturally funny and un-manufactured as The Landlord ( http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/74/the-landlord-from-will-ferrell-and-adam-ghost-panther-mckay ). Will Ferrell always plays the same character, like it or not... well, I for one am getting extremely bored with it. I've found this out firsthand by wasting my money at multiple premieres of the same movie with a different title. Blades of Glory, Semi-Pro, Step Brothers. They all star the same one-dimensional person.
And for some reason, I keep going, hoping that someday he'll change his character while retaining the humor he's known for... and it just never happens.

Stranger Than Fiction?
It doesn't meet the comedy requirement, but it's certainly a different performance from him.
Good stuff.

@CW:
I agree, I liked Stranger Than Fiction a lot. It's the first time that he really played a different role than I was used to, and I really enjoyed it. That's what I want to see more of.

I absolutely LOVE Anchorman, as well. It has some of the funniest out takes of just about any DVD, including: "It smells like the inside of a fake leg" and the "sh*t waffle" sequence. Funny, funny stuff...

I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one. I don't know how many times in the past few months I've sat down to watch my latest Netflix delivery, found it unwatchable after 20 minutes, and said, "Screw it, I'm putting on Anchorman. Yes, again." Your comfort food analogy is spot on.

The only Will Farrell movie that I love is "Old School", which happens to be my favorite comedy and favorite movie. It's the only DVD I've ever owned that has received 10+ plays in the DVD player.

Forgot to ask if anyone else was a repeat viewer/listener of the commentary? The "I have to sell shoes on the street with my kids" bit is hell-arious, not to mention the random appearance of Dr Lou Rawls. If your a fan and haven't heard it, do so immediately.

The first time i watch Anchorman, i was tired and didnt get it, yet have watched it around 20 times since.
Its the most quotable film ever, from "I love Lamp" to the: "I woke up in a Japanese Family's Rec room this morning and they would not stop screaming"
Plus, Jack Black drop kicking Baxter off the bridge then shrugging his shoulders before muttering: "Thats how i role" gets me every time.:
QUESTION:
Has anyone seen the additional Movie made from outtakes and unused footage, any good?
