Is Buffy Slaying Her Way Back to the Big Screen?
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Scripts, Remakes and Sequels

When Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended its run in 2003, it didn't just fade away. Sunnydale might have been obliterated, but the Joss Whedon universe was buzzing with the possibility of other spinoffs, television films, and big screen appearances. Over the last five years, that has become increasingly less likely, especially in the wake of the popular comic continuation. So I am sharing the following only in the interest of keeping up on rumors, not because I believe it.
According to Moviehole, the Herald-Sun Newspaper had a small blurb on Buffy, which said: "Rumours are circulating in Hollywood that Whedon has a feature-film script based on his hit TV series ready to roll as soon as a studio is prepared to commit." While it's entirely likely that he does have some Buffy scripts floating around, I'd be wonderfully surprised to hear that one is all ready. Besides his busyness with the new television show, there's the comics, and more specifically -- a storyline that has continued beyond the show.
Would Joss somehow pull Angel and LA out of hell and have Buffy round up the Scooby gang? The only scenario I can imagine would be Buffy bringing Angel and LA out of hell. It would be epic enough for the big screen, and be an endeavor that would bring back all of the cast (except Anya... boo hiss!). But that's just a dream, and while this rumor sounds swell and I could go for many more years of live-action Buffy, I ain't buyin' it. Are you?

Aw you tricked me. I thought you were going to say Kristy Swanson was returning to the big screen...
I'd be up for Buffy The Vampire Slayer 2 with Kristy Swanson and David Arquette starring.

*To clarify, I saw it in the RSS reader first without the image of the tv show characters, so that was what tricked me.

I'm not buying it. And, while I like Joss a lot (BtVS and Firefly are in my top 10 series ever and Angel is in top 30), I don't know where it could go. Though, because it's him, I'd probably see it.

Or it forgoes the cast entirely and jumps to one or more of the other Slayers. Or they could go with the Fray story, or use Angel or Spike as a tie-in to some future Slayer. Lots of ways it could go, depending what Joss wants to do.

I would be "slayed" by a feature length Buffy movie. But more importantly bite your tongue, Anya was awesome. I have very little doubt that everyone would want to come back if only for the paycheck. Angel is the only one that I think would be hard to lure back into the fold.

Man, I would love to see the Buffster back in live action. The comics' season 8 is cool but not the same.
But I doubt it will ever happen with the original cast, they being employed elsewhere and aging as we all do.
BTW, Anya rules...

Not to spoil anything but I think the poster likes Anya - the problem is, she kinda CAN'T come back (watch the final ep). Unless we use some Whedonverse magic to do so.
As for the film, I agree, David B. is busy with Bones and running around Los Angeles to pick up Angel again, so he might be the hardest to woo. But, I think this would be a BIG movie, especially with Twilight reigniting vampire love. And it'd grab those fans plus all the old diehards.

Good luck in getting either Borenanz or Geller to show up for the movie. Both have gone to great lengths to distance themselves from those characters and shows. I say restart the whole series with a new Slayer and new characters.

"gone to great lengths"? I guess making crappy movies (gellar) is her way of distancing herself. She showed up to the last reunion they all had so I wouldn't be surprised if she'd agree to do a movie. And I think David Boreanaz would be in if it was in production during his hiatus from Bones.

Joss has said that if he could ever get the cast back together he would throw the comic book canon out the window.

If they want to make a movie, they need to do it as fast as possible--and it's probably already too late. Spike and Angel are both getting too old to play ageless vampires. They were having enough trouble trying to pretend they hadn't aged in Angel season 5, and that was four years ago. I'd love to see a Buffy movie, but I don't think it's going to happen.

Even many years after its publishing, I still feel that Joss Whedon's 'Fray' series has a better chance to succeeding in film than a follow-up to the Buffy TV series. The FX technology makes it all but doable now. Plus, it may be more accessible to the movie-goer who has never seen an episode/complete run of 'Buffy' and 'Angel'. Then again, the Ultraviolets, Aeon Fluxes and Underworlds of recent cinema may have killed any chance of that happening.
I also think another course of action for a continuation of the TV-verse is in the form of an animated film or series. No. I don't mean the "very-much-dead" Edgar Wight, Saturday-morning cartoon vehicle; cool as that would've been to see.
It's not too far out of the realm of possibility for Whedon to have his comic-exclusive Season 8 animated. There's enough talent across both sides of the Pacific to make it happen. Plus, it might be easier to schedule the original cast to lend their voices to the project and not themselves entirely.

The series is sorely missed by fans. I really hope they can still make one while the original cast can still look the part. Or maybe make the story happening in real time, ala X-Files 2.
But if there's no Tara there, please let there be no Kennedy. Unless Amber Benson can somehow play Kennedy, heh. I miss Anya, too.

I'm kind of the biggest Joss Whedon fan in the world, but I don't need a Buffy movie. Would be I totally ecstatic for one were it to actually happen? Yes. But it's not going to, there are no plans for it to, and I'm really loving the comics.
Serenity 2, on the other hand...

Information for people who didn't know.
At the reunion this year, cast said they would be open to the idea if there was a good story to tell.
Also Joss said himslef he throw the comic book out the door if he had to if there was a feature film.
Also if you watch last episode there another hellmouth in ohio. They could do it about that. The comic book picks up 2 years after the show basically stopped. Hard part would be covering up the whole L.A went to hell kinda thing at the end of angel season.
Also if you read and look into the last episode. there is a missing scene they never got to shoot. Since buffy beat the first saved the world. Powers that be going to grant her one wish. She suppose to tell willow about it. Willow jokes hope you never used it on shoes (because in last episode she wanted to go shoe shopping). Then buffy smiles and steps aside and tara is standing there.
Apparently actress playing tara wasn't able to shoot the scene so it was cut.
With that idea they could bring back Tara/Anya
