The Trailer for 'The Ugly Truth' Isn't Too Ugly At All
Filed under: Comedy, Romance, Sony, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips

The trailer for The Ugly Truth, the romantic comedy starring Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl is up at the film's official website. The premise of this film sounded downright terrible -- a television producer is forced to deal with a chauvinistic correspondent, who decides to teach her what men want so that she can find love, with the pair discovering "an unexpected result" along the way. Could that result be ... love? Yeah, probably.
But you know what? The trailer's not half bad, and it really does seem like an updated and raunchier Pillow Talk. Plus, it's rated R, which gives me a lot of hope that it could be something akin to a Judd Apatow movie. I really expected a lot of PG-13 chauvanism, not lessons on how to sexily eat a hot dog, or Butler using the phrase "ladygarden."
Maybe I'm just a sucker for a Butler movie after all. I slagged him off a bit last week, but he's just so darn charming, even when he's being a total sleaze. Then again, 2 hours of him saying things like "Get on a Stairmaster!" might be an emotionally unpleasant experience. I like escapism in my movies. If I wanted to hear guys saying that kind of stuff to me, I'd just go to a Denver bar and wait ten minutes. It'd be cheaper than a movie ticket.
The Ugly Truth opens April 3rd, 2009.

Maybe the "unexpected result" is that he's a necrodendrophiliac and she's a highly-evolved macaque with a penchant for big league chew.
Hey, it could happen...

I think this rom-com looks like the same ol' rom-coms we've seen. The trailer looks cheesy and is that same old story - the girl is falling for one guy while the guy helping her is falling for her. And, again, we have two stars who recently had rom-com hits this year.
I think "He's Just Not That Into You" looks a lot more appealing, A) because of the cast and B) because it focuses on more than one storyline.
But, that's just me, and I'm not one to go to theaters to check out a rom-com. I'll save them for DVD rental.

I do have to say the trailer looks a lot better than I anticipated, and I have to agree Elisabeth, the premise is horrible! I remember when this one was announced, I think I actually groaned out loud.
The beacon of hope for this one remains the "R" rating. And as long as they don't decide to gut the thing to fit the expectations of some test audience, it may have a chance. (I am disappointed that the producers felt the need to replace Butler's accent AGAIN. We live in a multicultural world. Why is it so difficult to believe Mike "Chadway" came from Scotland?)
At one point I read something that led me to believe the "unexpected" twist might actually turn out to be just that, in rom-com terms anyway. But after seeing the trailer, I fear you are right. What the producers feel the need to tell us is "unexpected" is exactly what we are expecting going in.
I do believe Mr. Butler is an intelligent man, therefore, I try very hard to believe he knows what he's doing in terms of the choices he makes. But I also have the sense that the loyalty he shows to certain members of his inner circle, while it makes him a good person, may not be the best thing for his career.
I have high hopes that Law Abiding Citizen and his new production shingle will be the beginning of a new phase. One with just a little more 'gravitas'.

I have to agree, the trailer actually is much better than I expected. Then again, a clever trailer editor could have just shown us the best bits of the film (I hate when that happens). While the R rating gives me hope, the film looks predictable. Heigl has quickly become a one trick pony, (another Jennifer Anniston IMO). Same exact character/performance as 27 dresses or Knocked Up. And unfortunately, the male lead could have been played by anybody as long as they were handsome and forgettable. The next potential Mr. McDreamy. This is so obviously a Katharine Heigl vehicle and Mr. Butler is along for the ride. The film hinges on whether or not he can steal the show, and the R rating might provide him the chance to swipe the film out from under Heigl. Sadly, this is probable all wishful thinking.

Wow I thought the premise sounded poor & it, well, looks poor to me. Again, I have to agree w/Elisabeth & Weetiger the 'R' rating holds the promise of better laughs. As Julie said Butler's role could've been played by anyone nice-looking & forgettable, so if Butler can steal scenes then it might work. I didn't feel like we were slagging Butler off last wk, Elisabeth. I thought we were just 'discussing' the peculiar turn his career has taken, lol. I was one of the people who doesn't understand him continuing to support actresses in bad movies: TR2, PS I Love U, The Ugly Truth, & now he's apparently signed, inexplicably so, to support Aniston in a movie her prod co is making. Btw, his American accent isn't right. They spend enough $$ on movies that it should be right before they role cameras. So often actors fr the British Isles don't get their generic Amer accents right & I've gotten so I really kind of dislike it. I mean let's face it, there are enough good-looking, forgettable Amer actors who could've played this. It's sloppy work on the part of the director & whomever the dialogue coach is. But I don't want to sound like I'm picking on Butler. Honestly I'm not. I like him, I like seeing him, or I wouldn't bother posting. I just wish he was doing better work, the kind of work we all know he's capable of doing having seen him do it already. It makes him seem lazy to consistently do this kind of crapola.

I dunno....it DOES sound like the usual suspect when it comes to these romantic rom-coms as someone put it (very well), but the trailer surprised me too, I think it looks pretty damn good. I'll see it.
