'Dark Knight' Not Getting an IMAX Re-Release??
Filed under: Action, Fandom, Exhibition, Home Entertainment, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
A couple of months ago -- and after watching the film spit out monster box office totals -- there was word Warner Bros. would throw The Dark Knight back onto IMAX screens (and possibly conventional theaters) for one last run. With the flick currently lingering around the $996 million mark, a re-release would all but guarantee it the much sought-after $1 billion. However, according to Superhero Hype, it's not gonna happen. They don't give much of a reason or a statement, just that plans to re-release on IMAX screens have apparently been scrapped. It's unfortunate, too, because the DVD (which we'll review tomorrow) includes a few great behind-the-scenes features on the film's IMAX sequences. And, as someone who did not have a chance to catch the flick on IMAX screens, I was kinda looking forward to taking in a screening this January during the re-release after watching how they went about shooting it. Considering Christopher Nolan and his crew made history by becoming the first major feature film to shoot partly using IMAX cameras, you'd think folks might want to stage an encore engagement. Oh well.
Also of note: Variety reports that The Dark Knight will arrive via video-on-demand in South Korea two weeks before the DVD hits shelves, making it the first Hollywood blockbuster release to go VOD before DVD.
Were you looking forward to watching The Dark Knight again on IMAX screens?
UPDATE: BoF reports (via a Warner Bros. source) that this is not true, and that the film will indeed be released on IMAX screens in January. Superhero Hype has removed the original story from their website. We'll let you know when something a little more official hits, but it looks good for fans ...

Such a pity... I also only saw it in a conventional theater and was really looking forward to the chance to check it out on the IMAX screen.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the Awards... They did say the encore was at least in part as an effort to put the film in the spotlight during awards season... Maybe with that Score Debacle and other insider news we may not have heard yet, they decided their chances are not as good as they originally expected and are choosing to quietly back down on this Oscar Push.
What else could it be? I mean, it's free money.

I actually was able to watch the IMAX of 'The Dark Knight' twice in one week (Nov 13th, and Nov 20) the IMAX here in Myrtle Beach, began showing it on Halloween to sold out performances. IT WAS AMAZING, now only a week until I can get my permanent home viewing fix.
I just wish it would have cracked the billion mark. but i paid my share of $67 for its original run (5x)

I just saw it like two weeks ago in IMAX. Of course I saw it on the regular theater but when I was strolling down on Cannery Row in Monterey I saw that The Dark Knight was playing on the IMAX still and it was starting in 6 minutes so I ran in and checked it out and I am glad that I saw it.
It should be re-released and it will do really great.

I was definitely looking forward to it. Who wouldn't? I saw it on a regular screen the day after it opened. I was at a summer camp all that week. The cool part is, the day it came out, I was busy acting in a skit where I played Heath Ledger. Not the Joker, just normal Heath. That was meta for me.

I never got the chance to see it in IMAX, and when I heard about the re-release, my first thought was that I'd get a chance! I'm so bummed to hear this, I was actually looking forward to it and it would give viewers extra incentive to see it in theaters over seeing it on DVD.

I gotta say, this really bums me out.
I saw it 3 times in IMAX, it was in incredible experience every time.
And here in Michigan you need just about anything you can find to look forward to in January.

This isn't true. Check WB....www.batmon-on-film.com reported that a WB rep said that this story isn't true.

Well that really sucks, I don't see why they did that. It's not like people wouldn't see it just because the DVD's out. Man, I was really hoping to catch it in IMAX again on my birthday. ):
And I doubt they've cancelled it because of the Awards. If anything the Dark Knight's chances are better than ever, since a couple of films that were considered serious contenders apparently aren't as good as people thought.

Glad to see that you updated this and that its not true. I was really looking forward to seeing it AGAIN on an IMAX screen for the re-release. Incredible movie, and everyone out there who has an IMAX theater within a reasonable distance should go and see it when they put it back out there. I compare the scenes that are shot with IMAX cameras to switching from watching a regular, small screen television program to watching a blu-ray movie on a huge plasma screen. Its really incredible to see.

If you haven't seen this on IMAX, check it out when it's re-released. The bank heist alone is worth the price of admission.
