Shia LaBeouf Enters the World of John Grisham
Filed under: Thrillers, Casting
He's had the honor of being the on-screen offspring of names like Harrison Ford and Carrie-Anne Moss. He's faced a few different types of robots. And now, well, he's following the likes of Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington, Matthew McConaughey, and Matt Damon. Variety reports that Shia LaBeouf is going to star in the next John Grisham flick cooking up at Paramount, The Associate. If it doesn't sound familiar -- that's because it's an upcoming novel slated for release in January. The film will focus on a student (LaBeouf), heading towards graduation at Yale Law School, who somehow gets manipulated into taking a job with a prestigious law firm. This gig gives him "privileged information about a multibillion-dollar lawsuit." After that, I guess thrilling twists ensue.
It looks like the Shia train has no signs of stopping quite yet. Could the fiery world of law do it? I don't know... I liked him more when he was a wee tyke, and I can't picture him as a Yale smartie. Can you?

No, i can't see him in this. In fact, i can't understand why he's still around at all. He's been jammed down our throats since transformers and his idea of acting is to eke out his lines with a nasty stutter. Can we please put him in the historical trashcan already???

"It looks like the Shia train has no signs of stopping quite yet." I was kind of hoping 'Eagle Eye' would have derailed it. Let's hope/wish/dream (whatever it takes) that 'The Associate' is successful in derailing it.

He was accepted into Yale in real life.... so why would this be so far fetched?
Shia is a great actor, and he's done good work. I have no idea why people like to dog him. Perhaps because he is doing well, is cute, and has some tallent? People have a lot of jealousy issues.

Nobody's dogging the guy, he's just an actor most regular dudes, like me, just find annoying for some unexplained reason. In contrast, I don't have the same problem with, say, Matt Damon or Ryan Gosling, who I think are fine actors and choose their material well. This Shia guy though annoys the piss out of me for some reason.

Jim: There are actors I dislike, but usually there's a reason behind it. I've noticed a lot of guys dislike Shia, and I am curious as to why? I mean, give me something. At least if you said "he was swinging on vines with monkeys in Indy 4" then I'd see your point. Yes, that was a low point for Shia, but overall he did good as the Indy sidekick IMHO.
Have you seen him in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints? He was GREAT in that. He was also good in Disturbia, Holes, and The Greatest Game Every Played. Granted Holes & GGEP are Disney flicks, but he was a Disney kid. He's actually quite funny as well. I think he is really coming into his own, and proved with Eagle Eye that he can handle opening a movie (when it's not a "franchise" like Transformers or Indy) on his own merit.

Is it just me or does the premise of this film sound eerily similar to The FIrm?
