A Message for Hollywood -- Go Romance Some Other Stone!
Filed under: Action, Comedy, Romance, Deals, Scripts, Remakes and Sequels
As I sit here in the middle of the night, three remakes hit the wire. Is there something in the air? All are annoying, and I'm sure some of the other lovely Cinematical writers will deal with them, so I'm going to stick with Kathleen and Michael. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Fox wants to bring Romancing the Stone back to the big screen. Kathleen Turner. Michael Douglas. Danny Devito. If you don't remember, or know (sacrilege!), the film focuses on a romance novelist who goes to Colombia to deliver a package and free her kidnapped sister, but she ends up in a jungle with the sexy Jack T. Colton and heads off on an adventure that brings thrills as much as romance.
Isn't there some other stone they could romance? Couldn't Fox merely take the basic idea and run with it? Why bother taking the exact story and try to fill shoes that can never be filled. But hey -- Daniel McDemott is writing it, and considering the fact that he's already working on a remake of Soylent Green, I shouldn't be surprised about this.
But that doesn't make the news any better, and makes me want to shove a jewel up someone's Nile.

It was a high-end Raiders knock-off, but I guess they're just hoping to sell it on the title.
I agree, though. Just make an adventure movie.

It's funny, one of my earliest memories of film was when I lived in Manhattan as a wee boy, and they were filming the finale of Romancing the Stone up West End Avenue, with the big ship and all that. And we could see it outside my window, and my mother was freaking out because she spotted Michael Douglas.
Nevertheless, I've seen this flick way too many times, and while I think the premise could totally be revamped for today (didn't Fool's Gold try to go that route?), they shouldn't just remake this one. Be original, create new adventures. I'm cringing at the thought of them talking Michael Douglas into playing some stupid cameo role in the remake ...

I don't know. Romancing the Stone was about as interesting as an episode of MacGyver (sorry Patti and Selma). If they want to mine early Robert Zemeckis movies for material, I think Used Cars would be better.

I loved "Romancing The Stone," but agree, they should come up with
something new. Why don't they make a great movie about some of the great books that are currently out there... for instance, last
weekend I read a great Mystery/Romance book titled, "The Silent
Note." This book would make for a great movie and I am sure that
there are other great stories out there.

I loved the original as a kid, it was one of those movies I could watch over and over. So, having said that, I'm with you Monika, a remake does nothing but piss me off!
I like vegimorph's suggestion! LOL...I was just talking to a good friend of mine about how Hollywood has pretty much totally run out of original ideas. Re-makes and book adaptations galore...but you know when I really knew the quality was going to keep going down? When the news hit a few weeks ago about the Monopoly movie. Monoply! For Christ's sake...
