Discuss: Most Disappointing Films of 2008?
There's an interesting discussion currently making its way around the internets after About.com's Jurgen Fauth listed his choices for the most disappointing films of 2008 -- a list which boasts fan favorites like The Dark Knight, WALL-E and Slumdog Millionaire. Obviously Jurgen is one to go against the grain -- and more power to him -- but we're certainly allowed to disagree with statements like (when speaking of WALL-E): " ... for my money, the much maligned Star Wars: The Clone Wars offered much more exciting entertainment and a fresher visual style." George Lucas sends his love.Karina over at Spout then picked up the torch and shoveled out some of the films she was most disappointed by in 2008, including Religulous, Che and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (this one in particular caused the gal a few hate mail waves). As far as the films on my list, top (or bottom) honors would have to go to Choke, which was a great book that landed in the wrong hands. Part of me already expected to be disappointed by Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, so we half-count that, and, like both Jurgen and Karina, felt Oliver Stone could've done much better with W. I'll round out my list with Clint Eastwood's Changeling -- a film I thought tried to be too much at once -- and then ask you for your most disappointing films of 2008. So ... sound off below.

Revolutionary Road by far. I was so looking forward to it and it's such a piece of shit. The writing is all so on-the-nose and much of the dialogue is plain laughable. What a huge waste of great talent. I blame Justin Haythe and his shitty script.

I would have to say that I couldn't pick one. I'm a person who has not seen the "Oscar" films this year yet. I haven't had time to see them. But I viewed a lot of films over the summer. I believe the most disappointing was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I won't go into why it was disappointing, but it was. I also believe that The Happening was beyond terrible. Probably the worst film of the year by far. I wasn't expected that much in the first place after M. Night Shamalyan's decent with The Village and Lady in the Water, but I was still majorly disappointed none the less.

I would have to say i was not as pleased by American Teen as I wanted to be.
I also had a tad bit of hope that The Love Guru may have been funny, but it was utter torture, unfortunately.
I was expecting something more from Stop-Loss, whether it be emotion or experience, but it was still quite a good film.
Mama Mia. My, my, my. Could have been so much better.
I was not a fan of the overall way Hancock was done, I am not sure how to explain it too, which is the most frustrating part.
I wasn't really expecting much from Funny Games, but boy did I hate it. It was so bad that there was nothing clever to its inferior script and direction that it was not likable in the slightest.
There could have been a few more laughs in Ghost Town, but it was not that bad either.

I didn't know what I'd post till I read yours, Alec. I've seen a lot of bad movies this year, but one takes the cake.
THE LOVE GURU IS THE WORST MOVIE EVER MADE.
After seeing Mike Myers in this utterly despicable piece of trash, I can never again watch him onscreen and laugh. He is dead to me, and he should be dead to all of you now.
Don't ever support him with your money, he has enough to blow on his crap films.

The Love Guru certainly takes top honors, would-be comeback vehicle that it was.
Choke was massively disappointing, but I'm a huge fan of the book... which probably makes it worst.
Star Wars too, but the disappointment from prequels to this wasn't nearly as great as
But nothing made me so angry this year as Indiana Jones and the Indulgent Nostalgia That Substituted for Actual Storytelling. And since "nuking the fridge" is the new parlance for when a movie franchise jumps the shark, I don't think I'm alone in this.

Star Wars too, but the disappointment from prequels to this wasn't nearly as great as the disappointment going from Return of the Jedi to The Phantom Menace.

I speak with the mindset that the biggest disapointments are the things that you anticipated but didn't live up... If that's the case, I've got to say Bond. Was decent, but didn't live up to Casino Royale in the least.

After reading that I am fully convinced that the writer of the article is a Fucking idiot. Seriously Stars Wars looks like a bunch of wooden cutouts, how the hell is that fresh?

The Love Guru.
I was expecting it to suck and it still managed to disapoint me. What a terrible movie. It made me so angry.
Out of films that I actually expected to be good, I'd say Quantam of Solace, Transporter 3, Tropic Thunder and The Incredible Hulk were all big disapointments.

Quantum of solace was turd.
Tropic Thunder was horrible too.
The X files wasn't about aliens, wich sucks.
Hellboy 2 was very.. not my thing.
The Forbidden Kingdom. That was... unpleasant.
And the list... well. It's bad. Let's leave it at that.

Trying to think of what I've seen this year one does pop into mind. 'Passengers' with Anne Hathaway and Patrick Wilson. With the talent they had in front of and behind the camera (Rodrigo Garcia, Dianne Wiest, Andre Braugher, David Morse, Clea Duvall), they could ahve made something halfway decent. But it was a neat premise served with a silly, cliched script and hamfisted, lazy direction. Tone was all over the place, and most of it was laughable. Very disappointing to say the least, was looking forward to it.

I had extremely low expectations for Tropic Thunder and found it actually not bad (it's a movie that mocks Hollywood)
Hancock disappointed me and like someone said before me I can't say why
Indiana Jones was just not good but i didn't really expect it to be so I'm alright with that

i can tell you why hancock was so rubbish. it was because it tried to be two different films in one. the first half was a wild wild west alike, fun, stupid action film, and the second half attempted to be like I-robot (to use two will smith comparisons for convenience) a fairly serious action drama(but still a tad stupid)

"Quantum of Solace" was, actually rather excellent. What are we to say of a word in which there are many who seem utterly incapable of enjoying the spectacle of Daniel Craig kicking the snuff out of someone. And to those claimed there was a paucity of character development, I say bollocks! Craig's Bond has more character development in his facial expressions than many noted Oscar-winning screenplays. Mathieu Amalric is one of the best Bond villains in years, and we get more Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter, more Giancarlo Giannini, and the sexy Olga Kurylenko. And another fine turn from Dame Judi Dench. Sure, the theme song is rubbish, but anything's better than "Die Another Day". And the Tosca fight scene is an excellent example of Bond's superlative ability to fuck shit up. Also, it is worth noting that between Michel Lonsdale(Hugo Drax, Moonraker), Mathieu Amalric(Mr. Green, Quantum of Solace) and Craig himself, one must ask the question: will other "Munich" cast members leave their mark on the franchise? That is all. But, the biggest disappointment? "Indiana Jones 4 Or How We Wasted Karen Allen, Harrison Ford, and Everyone's Time". That should be the title of the inevitable Laurent Bouzereau Making-Of.

Since I was a kid, I have viewed the Indiana Jones trilogy as absolutely, stunningly perfect. Oh, that manly and humorous Dr. Jones...
Crystal Skull almost destroyed my very soul. Aliens with flying saucers? Soviet Union mind-readers? About 84 "I'm getting too old for this" jokes?
I have since convinced myself that there once really was a man named Indiana Jones and he did embark on those original quests. George Lucas, years later, read about him in the paper and decided to make a flashy movie about the guy. His version, of course, was fictional.

I think Quantum Of Solace was the most disappointing flick I've seen this year. Casino Royale, in my book, may be the best Bond flick I've seen, and I had set the bar pretty high and they pretty much dropped the ball.
I'm surprised so many people disliked Choke. I LOVED the book, and I also really enjoyed the movie, but hey, everybody's different. And since Indiana Jones pretty much compiled my childhood into a series of movies, I really, really enjoyed Kingdom. Sure, it wasn't in the same league as the others, but if you like Indy and you didn't get chills hearing the theme up on the big screen again, then I've got nothing for you.
Having said all that, however, Jurgen Fauth sounds like a real douschebag. I think WALL-E might be the second best movie I've seen all year, only behind In Bruges-which has been criminally overlooked!

I totally agree. In Bruges was a great dark comedy that has been overlooked. I recommend it when someone is looking for a smaller, great title to watch. It's not the same old crap we see so much these days.
