Review: Punisher: War Zone

Punisher: War Zone is proof of just how tenacious the people at Marvel Comics are. They're going to keep remaking and rebooting their characters' franchises whether anyone likes it or not!
This is the third time they've taken a stab at Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, the sourpuss vigilante who's been murdering villains in comic books for over 30 years. The first film, in 1989, starred Dolph Lundgren. It turned out as well as could be expected, considering it starred Dolph Lundgren. The reboot, in 2004, starred Thomas Jane and was ridiculed by critics and ignored by audiences.
But hey, third time's the charm, right? Punisher: War Zone, which is as laughably campy and violent as ever, follows the same procedure as this summer's Incredible Hulk in that it's not another origin story, but it's not really a sequel to the last entry, either. 2004's Punisher had Castle's entire extended family being murdered; here, it was only his wife and children. Maybe they realized it's hard to relate to a guy being upset that his mother-in-law was killed.
Castle, now played personality-free by Ray Stevenson (HBO's Rome), has been living in the shadows of New York City and killing bad guys for either four years or five years, depending on which character in the movie you ask. He has an endless stockpile of weapons and some military training. He also has a serious grudge against organized crime -- not just the specific Mafiosi who murdered his family (he dispatched them long ago), but all Italian-named thugs, gangsters, and racketeers.
His primary opponent this time is Billy "the Beaut" Russoti (Dominic West), who renames himself Jigsaw after suffering a Punisher-related accident that tears up his face. An undercover FBI agent is killed during the same scuffle, which Castle feels incredibly guilty about. That guy had a wife and kid, after all! Of course, so did many of the hundreds of criminals Castle has murdered over the last four/five years, but never mind.
The police aren't terribly interested in stopping the Punisher from his vigilantism, since he only punishes people they want off the streets anyway. But the death of the FBI man brings federal attention in the person of Paul Budiansky (Colin Salmon), a no-nonsense agent (he calls the local cops "Krisy Kreme motherf*****s") who will stop at nothing -- nothing! -- to capture Frank Castle and put an end to his reign as self-appointed judge, jury, and executioner.
Directed by Lexi Alexander (Green Street Hooligans) from a much-rewritten screenplay eventually credited to Nick Santora, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway, War Zone -- with its cheesy dialogue, over-the-top Brooklyn accents, and violence that violates that laws of physics -- might be the most enjoyable bad movie of the year. I laughed at it more than I did at, say, Four Christmases. It's hard not to be entertained, on some level, by the sight of Castle punching a hole in a man's skull with his fist, or literally blowing people's heads off with pistols. In this world, a bad guy's physical stamina always correlates to how useful he is to the plot. No-name henchmen have craniums made of glass; the leading villains, on the other hand, are immortal (even when Castle bashes their heads against brick walls and concrete floors) until the story is done with them, at which point they are easily murdered. Castle himself, who has no supernatural powers of any kind, is shot several times, always in some part of his body covered by a bulletproof vest. (Whew!)
But as Roger Ebert is fond of saying, it's not what a movie's about that matters; it's how it's about it. All the humor in War Zone is unintentional; indeed, the more serious it tries to be, the funnier it gets. Somber scenes set in churches and at grave sites suggest the film actually wants us to ponder its moral and ethical implications -- which is sort of like a stripper telling you she wants to go to law school. Yeah, sure, whatever you say, movie. I'm not paying you to talk.
These crazy-violent shoot-em-ups are a lot better when they don't have such delusions of legitimacy. Show us the bloody revenge, give us a few scenery-chewing performances (I quite like Doug Hutchison as Jigsaw's lunatic brother), and leave the moral quandaries to Martin Scorsese. It's War Zone's laughable desire to be taken seriously that makes it enjoyable to watch but a failure at what it was trying to do.

Theres actually nothing wrong with pumped up B-films. One of my favorites is Death Wish 3. The story is absurd but its a ton of fun to watch! The marketing campaign for this Punisher movie was just awful! Never made me excited to see it!

Sounds just as expected. Admittedly, Frank is my favored comic book creation, but sadly poorly depicted. Oh well, save my matinee money.

I disagree completely with the assessment of the film maker's intent. I think they knew they were making absurdist camp, with little attempts at gravity and pathos thrown into the mix.
"All the humor in War Zone is unintentional."
Are you kidding? Jigsaw and his crazy brother recruit an army of gangstas and skinheads and Asian hoodlums to take on The Punisher by delivering a Patton-type speech with an American flag behind them and patriotic music playing. The reviewer may not have found this funny, but it was clearly intended as such. There are many other touches of humor and satire, perhaps not to everyone's taste, but clearly intentional.
This is a live action comic book: graphic but cartoonish violence, hammy overacting (and stoic underacting by The Punisher), and not at all interested in striving for realism. It is the antithesis of Iron Man and Dark Knight (vastly superior movies, no doubt). It is not trying to place a superhero in a real world setting. This is set in its own over the top Bizarro world.
It evokes the feel and the look of the Garth Ennis Punisher MAX series -- R rated graphic novels for adults. Those familiar with these books will probably enjoy this. It's not as good as them, but it comes close.
It's not going to win any Oscars, but it is by far the best of the attempts to make a Punisher movie. Unfortunately for the film makers, I have to report that I just returned from seeing it on a Saturday afternoon in a packed multiplex in a bustling mall, and there was only me and one other guy in the theater. Two old fan boys having a grand old time. This does not bode well for a sequel.

I completely agree with James. This movie was a lot of fun to watch. I can't believe the critics aren't getting it. Think about the woosh sound when a character is pulled away by another standing in an elevator. This is not supposed to be the real world, and it is meant to be fun and over the top. Because the critics are too square to have fun with this movie, I too fear it may be a huge failure at the box office. Hopefully, it will become a cult movie once it is on DVD.

The review of this film is horrible. Reviews are supposed to be a review of the film. Anyone can attack a filmmaker or production company. I will not be returning to this site for further reviews because of the poor quality and one-sidedness. The author of the review obviously needs some form of basic writing class, or perhaps some speech therapy. An eight year-old could have written this review...

im a fan of the punisher warzone (ray stevenson+ frank castle=punisher) but i wish that the second sequel will be more interesting storyline and deserving villains to punish like bushwacker, rhino, stiltman, etc. and other powerful enemies from other comics. i mean com on! the punisher dosent only kills one gangster to another or a boss gangster to another. get some villains who are more evil and(maybe) got superhuman strength so to get toe-on-toe with the punisher.and i wish that in the third sequel they put punisher's sidekick to replace microchip like stuart clarke from the war journal( i know that came from WWhulk but do it as an add) that would be super cool. i wish that the next punisher will jump one building to another like he did in the spider-man issue and i know that the punisher is a chick magnet. all girls from MU like though badass. hehehe just my opinion and i wish that the punisher fans like this and i hope someday the punisher movie will be top of the superhero comic movies...........peace=)

the real Jigsaw.. finally said...
Hi..
Iam a Punisher fan from Germany (sry for the poor english).
Ignore this review!!!
War Zone is "the" Punisher movie for all real Punisher fans (Iam a Punisher comic book fan since "The Punisher Strikes Twice"..).
About "Punisher - War Zone":
A lot of blood, action, kills, over the top non realistic comic book violence and with Jigsaw (Dominic West) one bad son of a bitch & crazy bad ass villain (forget about the Joker).
Jigsaw is the bloodthirsty bad guy, comic fans wanna see and Ray Stevenson is a lot more Punisher than Thomas "crying all the time" Jane.
No movie for blockbuster + clean action movie fans and for sure nothing special to people who don't know the Punisher before the 2004 movie.. but really hell of fun for all the old school Punisher fans and fans of the MAX Punisher series.
Trashy underground Punisher movie.. over the top brutal, dirty & bloody (cause of that funny).
My thanks.. Lexi, Ray and Dominic. Watching this movie felt like the old Charles Bronson days are back... yeah these films also didn't had the ultimate storyline but it was fun all the time and 100% over the top.. just like this "different 80's like" action comic overkill, named: Punisher - War Zone.
...just watch this movie, don't think much and have fun! if you can't do so.. don't watch this movie!
Enjoyed it (especially Jigsaw and his Zebra coloured mafia outfit!) LOL
