Watchmen Video Journal #9: The Easter Eggs

It's the 6th of December, and that means a new Watchmen video diary. This is video #9, which actually freaks me out a little bit, because it seems like yesterday that I was posting the first one. Official trailers, posters, ComicCon panels were miles on the horizon, to say nothing of the film itself. Now, we only have three more to go before the movie will be in theaters. It's going to be over before you know it. You will wake up tomorrow and it'll be March 6th, and you will either have seen it at a midnight showing, or be anxiously waiting your turn.
Anyway, enough about the passage of time -- the 9th journal is online at Omelete, and you can access it by clicking on the link or the photo above. (If either stop working, you're going to have to practice your Portuguese to find it -- it's the little button labeled Videoblog Dir. De Arte.) This one is all about the Easter Eggs buried within the film, little visual nods and set embellishments that will make the graphic novel come to life. It feels a little like we've heard and seen it before, but much of the footage is new, like the close-up of the newsstand above. The surface detail continues to leave me stunned -- and yet, I am horrified Laurie must wear that hideous red smock outfit from the book. If anything was begging to be changed, it was that! Watch, enjoy, and comment.

You know, there are times we feel that we are being unfair when we say that Americans are just so xenophobic that they don't make even the slightest effort to learn more about other countries.
But then someone from a major website like this one comes and posts that viewers will need to "practice your Spanish to find" a link on a Brazilian website, and remind us that are many of you who should learn to google first before making stupid jokes.
Brazilians, like the people who post on Omelete, speak and write Portuguese, not Spanish. Also, our capital city is Brasilia, not Buenos Aires, and we have major cities and not only jungles, just in case you also subscribe to those Hollywood stupidities.

I apologize for the mistake -- but as I only was sent Omlete's Watchmen page, I had absolutely no idea where it was based. If I had known it was a Brazilian page, of course I would have known it was Portuguese. I never intended it as a joke.
I wrote this post at 2am, and didn't research the link. That's all there is to it. I am perfectly familiar with Brazil, its culture, its language, and its capital, thank you. But please, go ahead and insult this "xenophobic" American more, because of course, it isn't xenophobia when *directed* at an American.

@Elizabeth: I would think that the .br on the URL would be enough a hint of the website's origin, but apparently not.
No one is asking you to research what city the website is allocated on, but it would be a nice courtesy to extend to just check if what you are saying on your article is right or not. Believe me, that is just as important as checking for the topic data, or for your spelling. BTW, it is spelled "portugUese", not "portugese".
And please, don't try the "it's only offensive for you" defense. I have absolutely nothing against Americans, and didn't say anything to that effect. What I did say is that there is a history for those comments, perpetuated by the same american media you cover on this website, and it doesn't help *at all* when we see people make these "ordinary mistakes" as if it was nothing. Americans are well known for your patriotism, allow me to keep the little I have of mine.
@Kurt (commenting a little below): I'm well aware of the similarities between Portuguese and Spanish, as I am of their differences. However I also know that no one likes to have their origins questioned. Tell a Japanese guy that all orientals look the same to see if he likes that.
If you are going to claim the origin of something, check before posting. Is that simple. If you don't, then don't complain if someone gets pissed at you.

To be fair, a non-Spanish speaking American isn't going to have any way of telling Spanish from Portuguese--even with all the differences in the languages. We have far more Spanish-speakers in this country than Portuguese-speakers, so yeah, Liz made a mistake, but it's an easy one to make.
Certainly nothing worth shaming her offspring over.
I, on the other hand, will take umbrage with the contents of the video journal. Including nods to the source material is NOT an "Easter Egg". It's good set design. Putting A113 on license plates in Pixar films is an Easter Egg. Putting a newspaper in a frame on the background wall is what set designers and prop masters are paid to do. If it turns out that someone at the news stand is reading a different comic by Alan Moore--that would be an Easter Egg. Designing Rorschach's grappling gun, not an Easter Egg.
See the difference?
And is it me, or does this little video journal seem overly congratulatory? Talking about how all these people are doing a fabulous job and really giving 100% on a project that won't even be out for another four months? Really? They sound like Peter Jackson did when he was hyping King Kong. And that turned out really well, didn't it?

Back on topic, I really can't wait for this film. I get more excited every single day, and these videos only make it worse.
