'Dear Zachary' Airs on MSNBC Tonight!
Filed under: Documentary, Fandom, Home Entertainment, Trailers and Clips

Ever since we began championing the fantastic documentary Dear Zachary earlier this year, several of you have written in wanting to know where and when you can see it for yourselves. Well, cancel plans for tonight because the flick will air on MSNBC later this evening at 9pm EST, and will be shown again at midnight EST. That time adjusts for the other time zones, so my advice is to look it up on your cable guide to get the exact time it's airing in your neck of the woods. Here's what some folks have said about Dear Zachary:
"One of the best documentaries I have ever seen in my entire life... a film that will rock you to your core. You will cry. You will hurt – and this film will sit with you for days, weeks, months. But you will come away believing in people. Believing that even where there is evil, there is also a tremendous amount of good." - Erik Davis, Cinematical.com
"Before all else, there's Dear Zachary, documentarian Kurt Kuenne's shockingly intimate account of his road trip a few years ago, after his childhood friend, Andrew Bagby, was shot under mysterious circumstances in 2001. Excuse the hyperbole, but Dear Zachary is one of the most alarmingly forceful documentaries in years." - Eric Kohn, IndieWire.com
"This documentary will rip out your heart and leave you in the snow without a sweater. But afterwards, all wounded and broken down, you will see the power of the human spirit even in the face of the darkest of souls." - Sarah Diamond, director of programming, Slamdance Film Festival
"...The talk of Slamdance... Dear Zachary is, above all, a virtuoso feat in editing, and Kuenne uses the material at his disposal to devastating effect... it's impossible not to feel emotionally exhausted." - Peter Debruge, Variety

I have no doubt the documentary is as you say, but the subject is so wrenching, so terrible, "emotionally exhausted" is not a state I wish to achieve.

I saw this previewed on Reelz Channel, I believe, and it looked EXACTLY like something I did not want to experience. I do not need to cry tonight... I've cried during some otherwise bad movies, and that is hard for me to admit, but I can't bear to willingly put myself through it for this one. Maybe someday I'll watch, but not now. I'll just get too mad at our justice system.

I haven't seen this yet and won't be able to tonite (as I don't own a TV), but I will see it someday. It's great to see Cinematical getting behind non-Hollywood material such as this.

I stumbled upon this documentary today without having any idea of what I was watching. It was unbelievable. I can't stop thinking about this movie. It is extremely frustrating! It makes law abiding people never want to trust the justice system. It showed me the story of two people that have to be the strongest people around. The family is in my prayers tonight! They are amazing people and clearly demonstrate how they are using something horrible to change things. What an inspiration.

I, too, stumbled across this documentary this afternoon. It is one of the best documentary films I have seen in a long time. If it hasn't been submitted to Sundance, it should be. In fact, it should be nominated for an Academy Award. Kuenne has made a masterpiece of love to his friend. Just fantastic. Tragic is an understatement. My heart goes out to his family.

I am in the process of watching "Dear Zachary" for the 2nd time today. I was so overcome with emotion, I do not recall the last time something touched me so deeply. In my unprofessional opinion, this documentary was done wonderfully leaving out nothing. It is the simple story of something horrific, but will make you fall in love with Andrew and Zachary and feel nothing but empathy and sympathy for all the family and friends. Whatever awards there are out there for documentaries...this one by all means should be included in the running. How difficult it must have been to create this documentary and relive the entire tradgedy over an over all for the sake of changing laws to protect the innocent.

I am so glad you reminded me about this, I forgot! I have been clamoring ever since your review, and I missed the 9 o' clock showing, shit! So, it looks like I'm going to have to catch it at midnight and be exhausted when I go to class tomorrow. I have a feeling it will be worth it!

This documentary was absolutely breath-taking, heart-breaking, and tear-jerking...and yet, I was left inspired by the strength and courage displayed by a mother and father who were forced to endure a pain and tragedy, the depth of which I could not even try to measure. I will never forget what I saw tonight. I wish to know them....it would be such an honor. Amazing....a cinematic masterpiece.

My heart broke twice tonight for Andrew's parents. I can't imagine how they have gone on in the face of such unnecessary tragedy. God bless them, I will remember them in my prayers.
Each person in authority who could have prevented the tragedy has the blood of innocents on their hands; it's no wonder they had no comments to make when contacted. Every Canadian should write and protest until the laws are changed. The necessary address is at http://www.dearzachary.com
Again, my heart and thoughts are with the Bagbys and the friends and "brothers" who are having to live without Andrew and Zachary. May God bless and comfort each of you.

This is by far the best documentary I have ever seen. I enjoy a lot of the political shows on MSNBC but did not realize they were adding this new format. I am sure they could not have selected a better one to start with.
I could not think of a better gift for Zachary. I am sure Zachary watched it with the rest of us and Andrew's parents will have the hard copy.
For those of you who didn't like something sad, depressing, teary eyed etc. there was much more. It is all of those things and much much more. Andrew had a great family and friends and the documentary brought them to you. Yes I cried first with grief, then with anger and now with hope.
I agree...this should be targeted for some awards
