Evan Rachel Wood to Play Spider-Man's Girlfriend!
Filed under: Action, Music & Musicals, Casting, Deals, RumorMonger, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek
Don't worry hardcore Spidey fans, Evan Rachel Wood is not replacing Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane, Peter Parker's girlfriend. However, according to the actress herself, she's signed on to play Mary Jane in Spider-Man: The Musical, which begins rehearsals in June, 2009, and will most likely arrive on Broadway before the next big-screen sequel in early 2010. We've known for awhile now that the musical's director, Julie Taymor, has been championing her Across the Universe stars for the lead roles in the musical. Now that Wood has nabbed the co-lead, will Jim Sturgess play Spidey? According to Wood, who spoke with IESB at a press junket for The Wrestler, they're "still trying to convince him." It's important to note that both Wood and Sturgess have workshopped the musical with Taymor recently, so chances are good both will open the show in New York. Remember, music and lyrics have been provided by U2's Bono and The Edge -- and with two pretty movie stars in the starring roles, this thing could take off. Whaddya think? Will Spidey ruin his superheroic kickass appeal by deciding to belt out a tune or three on Broadway?

And can we replace Tobey Maguire with Jim Sturgess?
[Nothing against Dunst or Maguire, but let's mix it up.]

This just goes to show how much fans want to see a GOOD cast and Spiderman story. If this is the best we can do... forget it.
What a bad, bad idea. Cop Rock anyone?

Um, no more than he would ruin his appeal by doing a stupid dance number in the middle of the third installment.
I like Spidey enough, that if the reviews are decent, I'd be interested if it ever comes out to AZ. (And no, I don't like Spidey enough to buy the third movie.)

There aren't going to be any stupid dance numbers by Spidey.
This will be closer to Jesus Christ Superstar then to what we traditionally think of as Broadway musicals.
I, for one, am excited. Wood can really sing...not just the sweet soft way she did in Universe, but for reals!

Spider Man: the musical? hm, that sounds interesting. I'd like to see how they play that out. As for the movie characters, definetely keep McGuire and Dunst. the first two movies were excellent with them

I would like to see her over Dunst in the next Spidy film. I got so happy reading the headline then became sad Dunst is not good and neither is Maguire. I would have loved to have seen Sony go and bring in new people instead but I guess not.

I love the idea of Evan & Jim playing in a Julie Taymor created musical. Jim can sing his pants off (now that's a visual) and has a strong rocker voice. Evan, not so much, but has solid acting chops. I'm thrilled to think they will appear together again. BTW - Sturgess has had theatrical training since he was a boy, and has been a singer/songwriter since his early teens. He's certainly got the acting/singing experience needed to pull this off.
