Oliver Stone Preps Doc on Hugo Chavez
Oliver Stone might be done with Dubya, but he's not about to leave the world of Presidential intrigue. Variety reports that he's moving onto another controversial political figure -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. But this time around, the project won't provide a fictional look back in time to young rabblerousing. Instead, it's a documentary that Stone has been working on for six months, to be ready next year.Surprisingly, this won't be a feel-good doc, even though Stone and Chavez seem to be quite chummy. Instead: "It's about Chavez and the South American revolution," Stone says. The documentary will detail the opposition Chavez has faced, including the distaste from the Bush administration. (Stone just loves the Dubya.) That being said, it'll probably still be a Chavez-friendly picture.
And that's not all -- he's also got another doc in the works, one that he's keeping to himself for the time being. Rumor has it that it would be about Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but Stone has denied that. Any ideas? Chances are it'll be another notable figure.

As a Venezuelamnuelan, all I can say is... argh. This is the equivalent of Bill O'Reilly doing a doc on Bush. I'll wait to see, but yeah, this is going to be a Chavez drool-fest.

If you want to get another point of view, check out the frontline special from PBS entitled: "The Hugo Chavez Show".

Sad that the best analysis on the effect of his presidency couldn't come from his opposition here.
Mr. Stone needs to do some research instead of just going with whoever opposes Bush. I'm from Venezuela, and it sickens me, the way he has been kissing Hugo's Butt.

Great. Oliver Stone likes to think he could rewrite history with his blatantly biased and inaccurate depiction of public figures.

I, too, am Venezuelan. Not only that, I actually live and have lived my entire 21 years of life in Venezuela. And what do I have to say? You can go f**k yourself, Mr. Stone.
While I admire your filmmaking abilities a great deal (your JFK, Nixon, Natural Born Killers, Born of the 4th of July, Platoon, Midnight Express, Wall Street and Scarface are all fantastic films), and believe it or not, also happen to have liberal, left-leaning political ideology, I am convinced that Hugo Chávez does not represent those ideals, but rather a dangerous, radical anti-right movement that is leading my country into an authoritarian, personalist dictatorship. So, make no mistake.
Sincerely,
Carlos Balbás Espín.
